An OTC quote needs an expiry time just like any other executable rate
How to read an OTC quote before a large digital-asset conversion for a property purchase: size, price, fees, validity window and the eventual executed result.
This article reflects the named expert’s practical perspective. See NovAsia’s editorial policy for how material is prepared and reviewed.
A large conversion for a property purchase may be discussed through an OTC desk or a request-for-quote workflow rather than through a normal exchange order book. That can make the process feel more personal, but it does not make the quoted price permanent. An executable quote is meaningful only alongside its size, settlement terms, fee treatment and validity window.
A rate without a time limit can quickly become a historical observation rather than an offer the buyer can still accept.
First identify what kind of price you were given
“Rate” can mean several things. It may be an indicative market level, a preliminary number shared by a relationship manager, an executable quote for a defined size, or a trade that has already been accepted and booked.
Those states should not be treated as interchangeable when a property budget depends on the result. A buyer should know the asset pair, direction, size and whether the stated figure includes provider fees or spreads. A price available for a small transaction may not be executable for a much larger amount on identical terms.
Executable quotes have a clock
Published RFQ systems make the time limit explicit. Coinbase Prime describes a price hold during which the client can accept the winning quote; if the client does not act within that period, the quote expires and a new request is required. Kraken's OTC terms similarly state that a quote is valid for the specified period and cannot be accepted after expiry.
The exact duration is provider-specific. One platform's three-second or one-second workflow should not be copied into a general property plan. The principle is broader: if the buyer cannot execute the quote now, the number should not be treated as a guaranteed conversion rate in the purchase budget.
The property deadline runs on a different clock
A property contract may give the buyer days to make a payment. An executable digital-asset quote may live for seconds or minutes. Between those clocks sit several operational steps: funding the trading account, completing any review, receiving the quote, accepting it, settling the trade, withdrawing fiat and sending the property payment.
This is why requesting the “best rate” too early can be misleading. If the buyer is not operationally ready to execute, today's quote may have no practical value by the time the account or documents are ready.
Consider a buyer who receives an attractive OTC indication in the morning but cannot complete a platform review until later that day. If the original quote has expired, the property budget must use a fresh executable quote. Treating the morning number as a promise creates false precision.
The quote should state what is included
For property settlement, I want the quote to answer more than the headline price. Is the price inclusive of trading fees? Is another withdrawal charge possible afterwards? Is the quoted amount a gross or net fiat result? What asset quantity is being sold? What currency will be credited?
Coinbase Prime's published RFQ documentation, for example, describes an all-inclusive quoted price in its Prime workflow. Other providers may structure fees differently. The correct response is not to assume one model but to record the terms of the actual quote being used.
Execution needs its own evidence
Once a quote is accepted, the buyer should preserve the trade record that shows what actually happened. The pre-trade quote, accepted price and post-trade fiat proceeds are related but distinct facts.
Suppose the property route needs USD 150,000 to reach the next stage. An OTC quote may be attractive, yet the final usable fiat amount can still differ if some charges sit outside the quoted price. The buyer therefore needs to connect the executed trade to the fiat credit and then to the property payment.
For me, this is the core distinction: an OTC quote is a short-lived executable decision, not a daily reference rate. Its value lies in specificity. It tells the buyer what can be done now, at a stated size and price, under stated conditions. Once the validity period ends, the buyer has a new decision and needs a new number.
