Living and working remotely from Cambodia
For a remote worker, an apartment is home, office and part of a business-continuity system. A fashionable district is irrelevant if the connection fails in the actual room, backup power does not reach the sockets or meeting hours overlap with night-time noise. Cambodia can be a practical base, but ownership should follow proof of the workday, the immigration basis and the ability to change course. Until those are tested, renting is usually the stronger tool.
Who this is for
This route is for an employee of an overseas company, a small-business owner, consultant, developer, creator or anyone whose income is not tied to a Cambodian office. The common feature is that housing directly affects the ability to work. A poor apartment choice costs more than comfort: it can mean missed meetings, lost clients and an urgent move.
Remote schedules vary. One person needs a separate study and daytime quiet; another works late because colleagues are several time zones away. Some stay for a season and others build a multi-year base. Before viewing property, define meeting hours, upload needs, acceptable latency, monitor setup, backup-power requirements, exercise routine and travel frequency.
Buying becomes reasonable after the city and schedule have been tested, income is resilient, immigration is understood and the unit still works if the job changes. If your choice of country depends on the next contract, rent is not wasted money. It purchases evidence and preserves the option to relocate without a forced resale.
Does this route fit you?
Good fit if
- Income can be earned from Cambodia lawfully and sustainably.
- You will prove the address through a full work cycle before buying.
- Exit flexibility matters more than immediate ownership.
Poor fit if
- Work requires guaranteed enterprise-grade connectivity at home.
- The time zone damages sleep and relationships.
- The purchase is mainly an emotional commitment to the move.
Verify first
- A full working month with real calls.
- Independence of primary and backup connections.
- The right to stay and work under the chosen arrangement.
First move: Rent a completed apartment for 30 days and keep an availability log rather than one speed test.
The address is part of the production system
A remote worker should judge an apartment by the cost of a lost working hour, not by the presence of Wi-Fi. List critical tasks—calls, VPN access, file transfers, financial operations, clean audio and the hours when the team is online. Define acceptable downtime and how each task continues after a failure of the line, power, air conditioning or a quiet room.
National connection statistics and regulatory disclosure requirements show that a market exists, but they do not prove availability inside a specific apartment [1][2]. Buying makes sense only after a full working month in the same building or a genuinely comparable unit with proven infrastructure. One successful speed test proves little. Keep a log with date, time, failure type, duration and the backup that actually worked. The detailed testing procedure belongs to the existing remote-work guide.
What the 30-day test must prove
The test must include ordinary weekdays, evening calls, rain, weekend noise, large transfers and at least one deliberate switch to backup. Test more than the apartment: travel to the fallback workspace in poor weather and check whether a confidential call is possible. A backup location forty minutes away cannot rescue an urgent meeting.
At the end of the month, calculate availability: hours fully operational, hours degraded and hours unusable. Record the effect on sleep and relationships separately. If European or American working hours require permanent night work, a good apartment does not make the routine sustainable. This is an income-and-life decision, not an interior-design choice.
Backups must fail independently
Two connections are not independent if both rely on shared building equipment, one telecom group, the same cable riser or power in a technical room. Ask for the path in plain language: where the provider network ends, what the generator supplies, whether network equipment works during an outage and which mobile operator has usable signal inside the working room.
Add a human fallback: a saved coworking address, access without a long registration process, prepaid mobile balance, charging equipment and a management contact. The goal is not to build a home data centre; it is to prevent a normal failure from costing a client. Detailed tariffs and hardware stay on the specialist pages and must be rechecked when connecting.
When renting is stronger than buying
Renting is stronger while the employer, time zone, household, visa route or technical needs are changing. It allows a move after new construction, a weaker connection or a different schedule. Buying becomes more logical after several cycles, when income does not require frequent relocation, the address has proved itself and the ownership horizon can absorb acquisition and exit friction.
Do not buy merely to feel settled. Ownership reduces geographic flexibility and creates work during an absence: bills, access, repairs, letting and resale. If buying is considered, foreign ownership of the exact unit and property-tax obligations are checked separately [4][5]. Compare rent with the full ownership case over the same horizon, not with an advertised instalment. The budget hub explains available formats; this page decides whether an asset is needed at all.
Separate entry, work, tax and ownership
Entry, work, tax and ownership are four separate questions. Permission to enter does not prove a right to work; a foreign employment contract does not automatically settle local obligations; and an apartment does not create residence status. Obtain written advice on your income structure, physical presence, employer or business and intended duration before buying. A general article cannot determine personal tax residence.
Visa categories and documents change, so this page does not duplicate instructions. It sets a stop condition: if lawful presence and work are not confirmed for your horizon, property should not be used as a way to “anchor” the move. Establish the employment and immigration logic first, then decide on real estate.
Calculate the cost of failure
Add a work layer to normal housing costs: two independent connections, power for the router and laptop, a fallback workplace, transport to it, equipment, a quieter layout and possibly a separate room. Then value one lost working day and the risk of losing a client. A more expensive rental in a proven building can be cheaper than a low-priced purchase with repeated failures.
The stress case includes a month with renovation next door, a provider change, travel home and a forced temporary move. If the budget cannot support ownership and temporary accommodation at the same time, the asset constrains the work. The housing decision should preserve mobility rather than turn each technical failure into a financial problem.
Decide after the work cycle
A purchase can be considered when the 30-day log shows acceptable availability, the fallback worked, sleep remains sustainable, the visa and tax structure is checked and you can hold the property after a job change. If any element is unknown, extend the rental. That is not wasted time; it is information bought more cheaply than a mistake.
Stop conditions include an inability to work confidentially, common failure of primary and backup connections, permanent night hours, residence dependent on an unconfirmed arrangement, or a need to sell immediately after losing work. Change the system before choosing a project.
Which base format to test
| Option | Best when | Trade-off | Verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Completed unit in a central district | Meetings, fallback workspaces and car-light living matter. | Noise and less workspace. | Evening noise, the work room and a nearby fallback. |
| Larger unit outside the centre | A separate office matters and in-person meetings are rare. | Dependence on travel and less flexibility. | Two routes to fallback work and mobile signal. |
| Rent without buying | Work, team, visa or household plans are still changing. | Less control over alterations and connectivity. | Permission for a private line and early-exit terms. |

Who should use a different route
This page is not for someone effectively building a local business, hiring a team or serving the Cambodian market; that situation needs a separate corporate, employment and tax route. The label “remote worker” does not override the facts.
Use a different path if rental income is the main objective. Choose through tenant demand and net cash flow on the investor page, not around your own desk and habits. A family anchored by a school should start with school geography.

Frequently asked questions
Should I buy if I expect to stay for a year?
A year is usually too short to justify lost flexibility and entry and exit costs. Renting tests the city and work setup. Buying needs a longer horizon and a credible use for the unit after departure.
How do I test connectivity before buying?
Connect your own laptop by cable, repeat tests during your actual work window, run a call and upload, identify the provider and ask about repair history. Test the second line and mobile fallback separately.
Is there a dedicated digital-nomad visa?
Do not assume one. The official portal lists the E eVisa parameters, but long-term stay and the basis for the actual activity require a separate check [3]. Obtain current advice based on your facts.
What matters more: a central district or a new apartment?
Work reliability matters more than the age of the finishes. A completed building with tested connectivity, quiet and management can outperform a newer project. Compare the whole workday, not photographs.
Can I rely only on mobile data?
It may support some workloads, but as the only connection it creates a single point of failure. Prefer independent fixed and mobile links, power for the equipment and a nearby fallback workspace.
