Best Apps for Living in Thailand After You Move
Quick — 10-second read
- In short
- Start with LINE, maps, translation and at least two ride options. Add local delivery, shopping and payment tools once your Thai number, address and banking setup are ready.
- Who it matters to
- Expats, long-stay visitors and families setting up everyday life in Thailand rather than building a short-term tourist app list.
- Next step
- Set up a working Thai SIM, save your address in English and Thai, add a payment method and verify each app's official publisher.
This is a guide, not legal, tax or investment advice.
The Small App Stack Worth Setting Up Before You Fly
A move is a bad time to discover that your ride app wants a login code or that the pin for your condo points to the wrong gate. Before flying, the useful core is small: LINE, Google Maps, Google Translate, Grab and a second ride-hailing app such as Bolt. That covers communication, navigation, language friction and the first trip from the airport without turning your phone into a catalogue of Thai apps.
Open the accounts while you still have reliable access to your existing number and banking tools. Test notifications, confirm that your preferred payment method appears in the apps you plan to use, and save the rough location of your accommodation. Once you arrive, replace that rough pin with the actual entrance you use, especially in large condo compounds with several towers or vehicle gates.
A Thai SIM is the point where local setup becomes easier, not a magic key that unlocks every service. It gives drivers, couriers and building staff a local number to call and makes local SMS verification less awkward. Delivery, marketplaces and city-specific transport tools can come next; local banking should wait until you actually have an eligible Thai bank account.

Why LINE Becomes Part of Everyday Life in Thailand
Your landlord may send a LINE ID instead of a phone number. A clinic may run bookings through LINE, a condo office may publish notices there, and a technician may simply show you a QR code to add them. For many newcomers that feels redundant at first, especially if friends and work already live in WhatsApp, Telegram or another messenger.
The value is less about chat itself and more about how local contacts use it. A driver, shop or building manager can receive a location pin, a photo of the entrance, your unit details or a screenshot of the item you are asking about. That makes a short, imperfect conversation far more useful than trying to spell a Thai address over the phone. It also gives you a written trail when a repair appointment, delivery time or building instruction would be easy to mishear.
Businesses can use LINE Official Accounts. LINE distinguishes verified accounts with a badge, while unverified accounts can be created without the same review. A familiar logo is therefore not enough reason to trust payment instructions or personal-data requests; add business accounts from the company's own website, in-store QR code or another channel you already know is genuine. If a shop suddenly sends different bank details from an unfamiliar account, move the conversation back to a verified contact before paying.
Account housekeeping matters if you change numbers after moving. LINE's current help guidance for Thailand warns users to keep the registered phone number current because a cancelled number can eventually be reassigned. Keep your other messengers for family, friends and international work, but expect LINE to become the channel that closes a surprising number of small local tasks.
Ride Apps and Maps: One Main Option Is Not Enough
Grab works well as the default ride app because its Thailand network spans many provinces and offers several vehicle categories. Bolt is worth keeping beside it, not because it wins every fare comparison, but because supply changes by neighbourhood, weather and time of day. A more informative comparison is the quote and pickup time you see now.
Pickup geometry causes more frustration than most newcomers expect. Airports, malls and large condominiums often have designated zones, while a GPS pin may land on the opposite driveway or a gate cars cannot use. When the car appears to be fifty metres away forever, send the driver the exit name, tower or a photo of the landmark instead of repeatedly moving the pin.
Google Maps becomes more useful once you treat it as your personal address book. Save home, work, a clinic, supermarket and the places you return to, then store the condo address in both English and Thai. For a large residential project, a pin at the correct vehicle entrance can matter more than the formal street address. It is also worth saving the building name exactly as local staff write it, because English spellings can vary between maps, booking documents and signs.
Bangkok needs a different toolkit. Road traffic can make rail the obvious choice, while buses are much easier to understand with ViaBus, which provides route information and live tracking where available. BTS currently promotes its official THE SKYTRAINs app, and BEM offers Bangkok MRT for Blue and Purple Line information. These operator tools complement general maps when you need station layouts, fares or operator notices instead of a broad route suggestion.
Coverage is less uniform on islands and outside the biggest urban areas. Bolt lists rides in cities including Bangkok, Phuket and Krabi, while Grab publishes a much wider location list, yet individual vehicle categories still vary by place. A backup option only helps if you install and sign into it before the night you actually need it. If you relocate between cities, revisit the app stack instead of assuming the same categories will follow you.
One last habit prevents surprisingly long detours: zoom in before confirming the pickup side of the road. A divided highway, security gate or one-way driveway can turn two nearby map pins into two very different trips.
Food, Groceries and Home Shopping After You Settle In
Delivery stops being a tourist convenience once you have an apartment. It becomes the way you replace a missing charger, restock drinking water, get groceries after work or order dinner when you do not want another trip across town. GrabFood and GrabMart cover much of that in the Grab app, while LINE MAN remains a major local alternative for food, shopping, rides and messenger services.
One name should be removed from older Thailand app lists: foodpanda. Its commercial ordering and delivery service in Thailand ceased on 24 May 2025. That closure is a useful reminder that app guides age quickly even when their screenshots still look familiar.
Condo delivery succeeds or fails on address detail. Give the building name, tower, unit, a reachable local number and a short instruction explaining whether the rider should wait in the lobby, at reception or at a designated collection point. In a large compound, a correct entrance pin can save more time than adding another line to the street address. If riders cannot go beyond the ground floor, putting the meeting point in the delivery note prevents the same phone call on every order.
Shopee and Lazada become most useful when household shopping turns into a routine. For electronics, branded goods and anything where warranty or authenticity matters, evaluate the seller and official-store status before chasing the lowest number on the screen. Payment and delivery options can differ by account and listing, so the checkout page is the final source of truth for a particular order. For expensive items, read the return terms and identify who actually provides the warranty before paying.

Thai Banking Apps and PromptPay: What Changes Once You Have an Account
Before you have a Thai bank account, your money toolkit is usually international: your home-bank app, an eligible card and perhaps Wise for cross-border transfers. A card that works for a Grab ride or online order does not automatically give you access to every Thai QR-payment flow. Local bank rails are a separate layer, and "my card works online" is not a reliable test for what will work at a local QR checkout.
Once a Thai account is open, the bank's own official mobile app becomes the centre of local payments. The available transfer, QR and bill-payment features come from that bank and from the permissions attached to your account. Choosing a banking app therefore starts with the account you are actually eligible to hold, not with an app-store ranking. Two foreign residents can end up with different everyday payment options simply because their banks, account products or onboarding documents differ.
PromptPay is commonly misunderstood as a standalone wallet. The Bank of Thailand defines it as payment infrastructure that lets users link an existing bank account to an eligible identifier, such as a mobile number, through banking channels. Whether a foreign customer can register, which identifier is accepted and which QR functions are enabled depends on the bank and the account.
Bank onboarding, identity checks, phone-number requirements and foreign-customer functionality can change. Treat this as a daily-life setup guide, not banking advice, and confirm the current terms with your own bank before making a payment method part of your routine.
Official Thailand Apps Worth Knowing — and How to Avoid Lookalikes
New residents do not need a folder full of government apps. One worth knowing is the Thailand Tourist Police App: the Tourist Police Bureau currently promotes it for assistance and translation, while hotline 1155 provides 24-hour support. The app includes an SOS route, but an urgent safety situation should never depend on a single app responding.
Immigration is where source discipline matters most. The Thailand Digital Arrival Card remains a required pre-entry submission for non-Thai nationals, and the Immigration Bureau maintains the official TDAC portal. Its current guidance says the card can be submitted within the three-day window before arrival. Save the official domain rather than relying on a search ad the next time you travel.
THIM is newer and easier to misdescribe. The Immigration Bureau operates the THAI IMMIGRATION APPLICATION and published its privacy notice in March 2026, but current TAT visitor guidance still describes THIM as pilot access linked to TDAC registration and says it does not replace TDAC. Until the Immigration Bureau publishes a confirmed change, treat THIM as an additional channel whose available functions may evolve. An app-store description is useful for installation, but it should not outrank the Bureau's procedure for deciding what you are required to do.
For any government service, verify the publisher and reach it from an official agency domain, not from an ad or a similarly named listing. An app is an interface, not the source of law. The controlling requirement is the agency's current official procedure for the exact immigration, safety or administrative task you are dealing with.

Expert view

A newcomer can fill an entire screen with Thailand apps and still struggle because the phone number, condo pin and local messaging are not set up properly. I'd get LINE, the Thai SIM and the exact building entrance working first; that removes friction from rides, deliveries and everyday coordination. Keep a second ride app installed as well, because driver supply changes faster than any permanent app ranking.
