International schools in Thailand: curricula, fees and how to choose

International schools in Thailand for 2026/27: compare British, IB and American curricula, fees by city, admissions, extra costs and how to choose well.

International schools in Thailand: curricula, fees and how to choose

Where to start

For a family moving to Thailand with children, the school can shape the housing search more than the housing search shapes the school choice. A Bangkok campus may sit far from the neighbourhood that first looked convenient, while in Phuket the difference between a central, southern or northern campus changes the daily routine quickly. A good home is less useful if every weekday starts with a difficult school run.

Curriculum labels also need unpacking. A school described as British may lead from the English curriculum into IGCSE and then A-Levels, or it may switch to the IB Diploma in the final two years. An American school may award a US-style high school diploma while offering AP courses, IB courses, or both. For a younger child, language support and continuity can matter more than the badge; for a teenager, subject prerequisites and the exact leaving qualification can be decisive.

Fees are just as easy to misread. Published 2026/27 schedules from the schools checked for this guide run from the mid-hundreds of thousands of baht to more than THB 1 million a year, before some first-year and optional charges. Registration, capital or placement fees, deposits, buses, meals, uniforms, language support and external exams can change the real family budget materially.

The figures below are screening ranges built from representative official 2026/27 fee schedules checked on 31 August 2026, not a statistical survey of every international school in Thailand. Always ask the school for a current grade-specific offer, the complete first-year invoice and written confirmation of a place before making a housing or relocation commitment.

In short

Comparison

Option 1 of 4

British / English

How it works
Typically follows an English curriculum, moving into IGCSE and greater subject specialisation in secondary school.
Leaving route
A-Levels in some schools; others switch to the IB Diploma after IGCSE.
Good fit for
Families wanting a familiar UK-style progression and students ready to specialise earlier.
What to check
The actual qualification in the final two years and whether a mid-course transfer is realistic.
Option 2 of 4

International Baccalaureate

How it works
Schools may offer PYP, MYP and the two-year Diploma Programme, but not every IB school offers the full continuum.
Leaving route
Full IB Diploma or selected IB courses, depending on the school pathway.
Good fit for
Mobile international families and students comfortable keeping academic breadth alongside research and core requirements.
What to check
Authorisation for the exact IB programme needed and the subjects the school actually runs.
Option 3 of 4

American

How it works
A credit-based high school programme with required subjects and electives; AP and sometimes IB may be layered on top.
Leaving route
US-style high school diploma, with AP or other external credentials where offered.
Good fit for
Families expecting a US-system transfer or students who value flexible course selection in high school.
What to check
Graduation-credit rules, approved AP courses and the entry requirements of target universities.
Option 4 of 4

Other / hybrid

How it works
French, Canadian, bilingual and mixed models sit alongside the larger international pathways.
Leaving route
The specific national or international credential stated by the school.
Good fit for
Families prioritising continuity with a home system, language, or a particular specialist route.
What to check
The exact leaving credential and how the next school or university will treat it.

Cost ranges

Bangkok — early years THB per academic year

Low: 459,800

Typical: about 650,000

High: 757,600

Representative 2026/27 anchors from KIS and Harrow; schools group early-years ages differently. The middle figure is a screening anchor, not a market median.

There is no market-wide tariff. Some schools include meals, materials or examinations in tuition while others bill them separately. Ask for a complete first-year cost sheet, including uniform.

What fits you

Suggested next stepPrioritise subject continuity and the timing of the transfer rather than the prestige of a curriculum label.

Ask the next school what it will require, and maintain home-language or home-system subjects separately if needed.

Suggested next stepIGCSE followed by A-Levels is a familiar structure; the IB Diploma is also a common university-entry route.

Check subject and grade requirements for the exact course and university.

Suggested next stepA strong US high school diploma pathway with AP options is familiar, while IB and A-Levels can also work well.

College requirements and policies for advanced-course credit vary.

Suggested next stepLook for a widely understood leaving credential, stable progression and strong university counselling.

Avoid unnecessary curriculum switches; continuity often matters more than chasing the most internationally branded option.

Suggested next stepCompare the complete first-year cost of several schools before choosing the city.

The checked Chiang Mai and some Phuket anchors start lower, but premium Phuket and Pattaya overlap Bangkok pricing at older ages.

Suggested next stepShortlist two or three realistic schools before narrowing the property map.

Confirm the real weekday commute and bus coverage before making a long housing commitment.

Schools by city

Bangkok offers the deepest curriculum choice, but it also contains the highest tuition anchors in this review. Families can choose schools offering IB programmes, US-rooted pathways with AP and—in some schools—IB options, and English-curriculum schools leading to IGCSE, A-Levels or the IB Diploma. In the published 2026/27 schedules checked here, primary tuition at major schools starts around the mid-THB 700,000s and premium upper-school tuition reaches THB 1,197,000. The city-wide label is misleading, though: campuses are spread across very different parts of the metropolitan area, so the home-to-school route needs its own decision.

Phuket has fewer large international schools, but the price spread is still substantial. HeadStart lists THB 480,000 for Years 1–6 and THB 540,000 for Years 7–13 in 2026/27, while British International School Phuket (BISP) reaches roughly THB 983,000 in the upper years. The academic routes differ too: BISP moves from the English curriculum and IGCSE into the IB Diploma, while other schools may continue toward A-Levels. That choice can determine whether north, central Phuket or another part of the island is practical for the family.

Pattaya should not be treated as a guaranteed budget alternative. Regents follows a British and international route and lets sixth-form students choose between A-Levels and the IB Diploma; Rugby School Thailand is a British day and boarding school near the city. In the 2026/27 schedules used here, older-year tuition runs from roughly THB 727,000 to THB 999,000. What matters is the exact school, what its fee includes, and whether boarding or transport changes the family budget.

Chiang Mai provides lower starting points in the sample while still offering distinct pathways. Chiang Mai International School (CMIS) is a US-style school with AP, Lanna follows a British route, and Prem offers the full IB continuum. The 2026/27 CMIS and Lanna anchors used for screening run from roughly THB 342,000–413,000 in early years to about THB 580,000–803,000 in upper secondary. Campuses are not concentrated in one neighbourhood, so a lower tuition figure does not remove the need to test the real commute.

Decision helper

Situation

Primary-age child and the family's time in Thailand is uncertain

Next step

Compare continuity, language support and how easily the child could transfer again later.

Keep in mind

At this stage, avoiding a disruptive move can matter more than choosing a final university credential years in advance.

Situation

Moving just before or during IGCSE

Next step

Match subjects, exam board and the point already reached in the course.

Keep in mind

A two-year examination sequence can be difficult to join late without checking content and assessment compatibility.

Situation

Entering the final two years of school

Next step

Confirm the exact leaving pathway and how prior coursework will be recognised.

Keep in mind

IB Diploma, A-Levels and US graduation credits are structured differently, so late transfers can narrow options.

Situation

The child's English is below the classroom level

Next step

Ask for the actual language-support capacity, cost and exit criteria.

Keep in mind

A website statement that support exists does not tell you how much support is available to this particular student.

Situation

Two or more children

Next step

Calculate the family's complete first-year bill and then apply the school's sibling-discount rules.

Keep in mind

One-off fees and discounts are applied differently, so multiplying tuition alone can be misleading.

Situation

The family has not chosen a neighbourhood yet

Next step

Shortlist two or three schools, check bus zones and test the normal morning route.

Keep in mind

Once the school geography is clear, unsuitable housing areas can be removed before a long lease or purchase.

Schemes and red flags

A strong brand name without a clear programme status

How it works

Marketing leans heavily on terms such as international, IB, Cambridge or American without making the authorised programme and leaving credential easy to identify.

Red flag

Admissions can describe the brand but cannot clearly state the exact programme stage or graduation credential.

What to do

Check the relevant awarding organisation's official directory and ask the school to name the leaving credential in writing. For AP, check approved courses rather than assuming the whole school is an AP programme.

A low tuition headline followed by a much larger first invoice

How it works

The advertised number excludes registration, admission, placement, deposits, transport or required support.

Red flag

The family cannot obtain a grade-specific list of compulsory charges before applying.

What to do

Ask for the complete first-year and continuing-year cost before paying non-refundable fees or choosing housing.

A verbal 'space available' message treated as an admission offer

How it works

General availability is discussed before assessment, while the exact year-group seat is still conditional.

Red flag

The family is encouraged to sign a lease or pay a non-refundable housing commitment before receiving a written school offer.

What to do

Treat the seat as confirmed only when the school issues a formal offer naming the grade, campus, start date and payment conditions.

Small-class marketing without year-group detail

How it works

An attractive average is quoted, but the specific class may be near capacity or language-support places may be limited.

Red flag

The school will not explain the maximum class size or support capacity for the child's level.

What to do

Ask for the current and maximum class size and how learning or English support is staffed for that year group.

University promises without credential detail

How it works

A broad claim about global university access replaces a discussion of the actual diploma, subjects and prerequisites.

Red flag

No one can map the child's senior-school subjects to likely university requirements.

What to do

Work backwards from plausible universities and courses, then check the leaving credential, subject menu and counselling support.

FAQ

How much does an international school in Thailand cost in 2026/27?
There is no single national price. In the schools checked for this guide, early-years tuition starts around THB 342,000–347,000 in Chiang Mai and Phuket, while premium Bangkok upper-school tuition reaches THB 1,197,000 a year. Phuket and Pattaya are not automatically cheaper at older ages, with some premium fees approaching THB 1 million. These are tuition anchors from published 2026/27 schedules, so request a current grade-specific quote before making a decision.
What costs sit outside tuition?
Common extras include application, admission or registration charges, deposits, buses, meals, uniforms, devices, language support and external examination fees. ISB lists a THB 260,000 registration fee, while BISP lists a THB 200,000 placement fee for one student plus a THB 150,000 refundable bond. Regents publishes additional IGCSE, A-Level and IBDP examination fees of THB 35,000–65,000 depending on subjects. Compare the full first-year invoice, not just annual tuition.
Which curriculum is better: British, IB or American?
None is universally better. A British pathway can suit students comfortable with IGCSE and earlier subject specialisation; the IB Diploma keeps broader subject coverage with a common core; a US-style high school can offer more flexibility through credits and electives. For older students, work backwards from likely university destinations and subject requirements. For younger students, continuity, teaching quality and language support may matter more than the final credential.
Does my child need fluent English before applying?
Not always, particularly at younger ages, but the answer is school- and grade-specific. HeadStart requires entrance assessment from Year 3 onward, BISP assesses non-native English speakers where needed, and several schools offer additional English support. The closer a student is to IGCSE, A-Level, IB Diploma or final US high-school courses, the harder it becomes to separate language development from academic progress. Ask for an assessment and a written support plan before budgeting around a school.
Can a child join during the academic year?
Many international schools consider applications throughout the year when space is available, but a mid-year move is not equally simple at every age. Joining an examination sequence such as IGCSE, A-Levels or the IB Diploma may create subject and coursework mismatches. Older students should submit transcripts and current course details early so the school can assess fit. The receiving school decides the grade and whether the transfer is academically workable.
How do I know whether there is actually a place?
Ask about the exact year group and campus, not generic school availability. HeadStart states that placement is subject to availability, and schools may operate waiting lists where a year group is full. An application fee is not a seat reservation; KIS explicitly says submitting an application does not guarantee placement. For relocation planning, a written offer is much more useful than an informal message that space is 'likely'.
Which city is cheaper for international schooling?
The checked sample gives Chiang Mai and some Phuket schools the lower starting points, while premium Bangkok has the highest published tuition. That does not make Pattaya or Phuket uniformly cheaper: upper-school fees at premium campuses in both can approach THB 1 million. Transport and housing can also reverse an apparent tuition saving. Compare schools at the same child age and on the same first-year cost basis.
Should we choose a home before the school?
For most relocating families, the safer order is school shortlist first, housing shortlist second. Confirm curriculum fit, likely admission and the commute for two or three realistic schools before signing a long lease or buying. Bangkok's campuses can be far apart, and Phuket's island geography makes north-versus-central location meaningful every weekday. The school run is a recurring cost in both time and family energy.

Expert view

Dmitry Kuznetsov

The fastest way to make a school choice expensive is to choose the home first and discover the commute afterwards. I want to understand the child's next few academic years before I compare school badges, because changing curriculum at nine is not the same decision as changing it in the middle of an examination course. Published tuition is useful for screening, but a new family's first invoice can look very different once registration, deposits and transport are added. I also would not treat a verbal 'space available' message as a confirmed seat. For planning purposes, the useful documents are the current grade-specific invoice and the school's written offer.
