Thai bank account
How can a foreigner open a Thai bank account in 2026?
How to open a Thai bank account as a foreigner in 2026: current rules at Bangkok Bank, KBank, SCB and Krungsri, DTV limits, fees, documents and branch checks.

Where to start
A Thai bank account is useful for far more than holding baht. It makes local QR payments, rent, utilities and domestic transfers much easier, and it can become part of the evidence used for some long-stay immigration routes. The difficult part in 2026 is not choosing the nicest banking app. It is proving that your immigration status and reason for needing the account fit the bank’s current customer-onboarding policy.
The four large banks in this guide do not publish one common rule for every foreigner. KBank currently says it will not open these accounts for tourist-visa holders, visa-on-arrival or visa-exempt visitors, or DTV holders. SCB’s standard savings-account page lists a passport and work permit for a foreign applicant. Bangkok Bank publishes a 500-baht opening deposit but tells foreign customers to contact a branch for the document list. Krungsri’s published Thai Savings product is narrower still for foreigners, using the bank’s Resident Baht Account eligibility for foreign customers, while other Krungsri products use their own criteria.
That is why a successful branch story from a friend is weak evidence. Two people with similar passports can get different outcomes because their visas, jobs, addresses, tax-residency declarations, source-of-funds profile or even the branch’s onboarding process differ. A better approach is to call or visit the exact branch first, state your visa category plainly, and ask which account it can offer and which documents it wants to see.
This page was checked on 31 August 2026. Banks can tighten onboarding quickly, especially as Thailand continues to strengthen controls against mule accounts and fraud. Treat the figures and document lists below as a current working map, then confirm them with the bank on the day you apply.
In short
- As checked on 31 August 2026, foreigners can still open Thai accounts, but a genuine long-stay or work basis is much stronger than visitor status; reconfirm requirements before applying.
- KBank explicitly excludes tourist visas, visa on arrival, visa exemption and DTV from its current foreign-account opening criteria.
- SCB publishes passport plus work permit for its standard savings account; Bangkok Bank currently sends foreign applicants to the branch for the exact document list.
- Krungsri Thai Savings is published for foreigners who meet the bank’s Resident Baht Account criteria, while other Krungsri products have separate foreign-customer rules.
- The opening deposit on the ordinary savings products reviewed here ranges from 0 to 500 baht; cards and account-service conditions are separate.
- An agent may coordinate paperwork and a branch appointment, but should never invent your eligibility or control your phone, PIN, OTPs or mobile banking.

What fits you
KBank explicitly excludes tourist visas, visa on arrival and visa exemption. SCB publishes a work-permit requirement for its standard savings account, while Bangkok Bank does not publish a general tourist route. A branch exception is not the same as a bank-wide entitlement.
KBank explicitly includes DTV in its current list of statuses that cannot open the account. The other banks reviewed here do not publish a blanket DTV approval, so the visa’s long validity should not be mistaken for automatic banking eligibility.
KBank accepts non-immigrant visas as the starting category but can request purpose-specific documents. If the account will support an immigration application, verify the required balance, seasoning period and bank-letter format separately with Immigration.
SCB directly lists a work permit, KBank uses it as an example of purpose-of-stay evidence, and Krungsri refers to work status in some foreign-customer products. Still confirm the exact account type and branch before you go.
A legitimate helper can reduce friction but cannot override bank KYC. Walk away if the service relies on a false address, fabricated employment, somebody else’s phone number or handing over permanent control of your banking app.

Step by step
Choose a branch, not just a bank
Tell the branch your exact status: visa exemption, DTV, Non-O, O-A, work status with a permit, or permanent residence. Ask which savings product it can actually offer you and what it wants to see today.
Build the file around your real status
A passport is only the starting point. Add the purpose-of-stay and address documents the bank has requested, rather than collecting random certificates from old online checklists.
Complete in-person KYC
For a foreign applicant, plan for branch identification unless the bank has confirmed a digital route for your exact profile. A complete file still does not make approval automatic.
Fund the account and choose the card
In the ordinary examples checked on 31 Aug 2026, the opening deposit is 0 to 500 baht; reconfirm the product at the branch. Keep that separate from the debit-card charge: your deposit remains in the account, while card issuance and annual fees are service costs.
Finish mobile setup before leaving
Test the app, mobile number, limits and facial verification while branch staff can still help. Your PIN, OTPs, passwords and device access should stay under your control from the first minute.
Cost ranges
Checked 31 Aug 2026. KBank publishes no minimum opening deposit; the Bangkok Bank, SCB and Krungsri products reviewed here publish 500 baht. This is a deposit, not a fee. Reconfirm the selected product or service terms on the date you apply.
Checked 31 Aug 2026. A rough current band across simple card examples from the four banks, including issuance and/or annual charges. Premium or insurance-linked cards can cost much more. Reconfirm the selected product or service terms on the date you apply.
Checked 31 Aug 2026. Not a universal tariff. SCB, for example, publishes 50 baht a month after 12 months without activity when a savings balance is 2,000 baht or less; Krungsri Thai Savings publishes 100 baht a month below its stated average-balance threshold. Reconfirm the selected product or service terms on the date you apply.
Checked 31 Aug 2026. This is not a bank fee or a market ceiling. Two public service offers show roughly 6,000 to 8,000 baht for specific cases; paying it does not create eligibility or guarantee approval. Reconfirm the selected product or service terms on the date you apply.
Schemes and red flags
“We can open it for any tourist or DTV holder with no qualifying basis”
A seller treats a personal branch contact as if it overrides the bank’s published onboarding rules.
They cannot explain which real document and which bank product will support your application.
Ask for the bank, product and required documents before paying. Do not proceed if the plan depends on hiding or misrepresenting your status.
Hand over your phone, SIM, PIN or OTPs
The helper keeps control of the device or credentials used to approve transactions after the account is opened.
Someone other than the account holder wants ongoing access to the app or verification codes.
Set up and control the app yourself. If you lose control of the phone or credentials, contact the bank immediately and suspend digital access.
Fabricated address, employment or supporting letter
Missing KYC evidence is replaced with a document that does not reflect your real circumstances.
The paperwork cannot be independently supported by your actual residence, employer, school or immigration status.
Use only genuine supporting documents. A bank may request more evidence or refuse the application if it cannot verify you.
A 100% approval promise before KYC
You are charged for an outcome that still depends on bank and branch approval.
The provider never explains what happens if the bank refuses the account.
Pay only for a clearly defined assistance service, not for a supposed right to bank approval.
Every inactive account is described as an automatic freeze
Dormant-account terms are mixed together with fraud-related restrictions to create urgency.
There is no reference to your specific account product, inactivity period or balance threshold.
Check your own product terms. SCB, for example, publishes a dormant low-balance fee under defined conditions, while anti-fraud restrictions are a separate risk-control process.
What the account is for
For everyday living, the value is mostly in Thailand’s local payment rails. A working mobile app, domestic transfers and PromptPay can matter more than the passbook itself when you are paying rent, utilities or another person locally. So I would treat successful app activation, the correct Thai phone number and facial verification as part of the opening process, not as an optional task for later.
Retirement is different because the account may also become evidence in an immigration file. Official Thai materials use benchmarks such as 800,000 baht in savings or 65,000 baht monthly income for relevant retirement routes, but the evidence required for a visa application is not necessarily identical to the evidence required for an in-country extension. The balance period and bank-letter format should be checked against the exact immigration route before you move money.
Family-based Non-O cases have their own financial evidence. Official consular guidance uses 400,000 baht or 40,000 baht monthly income in relevant Thai-spouse cases. That immigration threshold does not compel a bank to open an account to somebody whose current customer profile does not satisfy the bank, so solve the banking eligibility and immigration timing as two connected but separate questions.
Property buyers often want a Thai account as well, but that should not blur two different jobs. A local account can be useful for ongoing expenses, while a cross-border purchase transfer may require its own bank documentation and evidence trail. The international-transfer and FET workflow belongs in the dedicated property-payment guide rather than this account-opening page.

Expert view

The fastest way to waste a day is to arrive with a document list copied from an old expat forum and start walking from branch to branch. I would contact the exact branch first, state the visa category plainly and ask what evidence of purpose and address it wants now. With DTV in particular, I would not rely on anyone saying “KBank will definitely do it” because KBank’s current published rule explicitly excludes DTV. If the account is part of a retirement or family immigration plan, I check the bank’s onboarding rules separately from Immigration’s balance rules; they are related, but they are not the same test. And I would never let an intermediary keep my PIN, OTPs or mobile-banking access after the appointment.
