Cambodia Tourist Visa in 2026: e-Visa, Visa on Arrival and e-Arrival
Tourist entry to Cambodia in 2026 normally involves two separate decisions. First, the traveller must have the right to enter, whether through a tourist e-Visa, a visa on arrival or a visa exemption attached to their passport. Second, an arriving air passenger completes the free Cambodia e-Arrival form, which replaces several paper immigration, health and customs declarations.
The most common mistake is to treat e-Arrival as an electronic visa. The names are similar, but the documents perform different functions. An approved e-Arrival submission does not permit entry without the required visa, and an approved e-Visa does not remove the need to submit arrival information.
Visa rules depend on nationality, passport type, purpose of travel and entry point. A traveller should therefore check the current official visa-exemption matrix for the exact passport that will be presented to the airline and Cambodian immigration authorities. A family may have different requirements even when everyone is taking the same flight.
The three parts of tourist entry
The process is easiest to understand when divided into passport, visa and arrival form.
| Document | Purpose | When to prepare it |
|---|---|---|
| Passport | Confirms identity and nationality | It should normally be valid for at least six months on arrival |
| Tourist visa or exemption | Provides the legal basis for tourist entry | Arrange before travel or, where eligible, on arrival |
| Cambodia e-Arrival | Supplies immigration, health and customs information | Submit within seven days before arrival or at the airport |
Two different time periods are often confused. The three-month validity of a tourist e-Visa is normally the window in which it must be used for entry. The permitted stay after arrival is generally up to 30 days. Applying several weeks before a holiday does not reduce the 30-day stay, but applying too early can allow the entry-validity window to expire before the trip.
The passport should normally remain valid for at least six months from the date of arrival and have sufficient blank space. Airlines and diplomatic guidance may also consider the physical condition of the document. A damaged data page, torn passport or mismatch between passport, ticket and visa details can create a more serious problem than the absence of a printed copy.
Who needs a tourist visa?
Cambodia's visa rules are based on the passport used at the border, not the traveller's country of residence or departure airport. Cambodia maintains visa-exemption arrangements for a number of nationalities and passport categories. Another passenger on the same itinerary may therefore have different requirements.
Before booking a non-refundable trip, check the official Cambodian visa-exemption information for your nationality and passport type. Do not rely only on an old travel article, a previous visit or a tour operator's informal message. Exemption lists, authorised entry points and digital procedures can change.
Travellers with more than one nationality must choose the passport they will use for the whole entry process. The e-Visa should be issued against the same passport shown to the airline and immigration officer. An approval linked to one passport cannot simply be transferred to another document belonging to the same person.
Children require their own travel documents and entry permission. A child is not automatically included in a parent's visa or e-Arrival submission merely because the family shares the same booking and accommodation.
Tourist e-Visa: the predictable option
The category T tourist e-Visa is designed for travellers who know their approximate dates and prefer to receive a decision before departure. The official Cambodian portal lists a single-entry tourist visa with a government fee of US$30, an entry-validity period of three months and a permitted stay of up to 30 days. Standard processing is commonly stated as up to three working days, although travellers should allow more time for weekends, public holidays or requests to correct an application.
For an ordinary planned trip, applying one or two weeks before departure is usually more practical than leaving it until the final day. This provides time to correct a photograph, passport number or intended entry point. Applying many months before an uncertain journey is less useful because the approval is not an annual travel authorisation.
The application normally requires a clear image of the passport biodata page, a recent portrait photograph, an intended arrival date, accommodation details and the planned entry point. Names, passport numbers and dates should be copied exactly. Informal transliteration, omitted middle names or a single wrong digit can create avoidable delays.
The selected entry point matters. The official e-Visa system lists participating international airports, including Techo International Airport serving Phnom Penh, Siem Reap Angkor International Airport and Sihanoukville International Airport. Electronic visas are also accepted at selected land crossings, but not every crossing participates and operating conditions can change.
After approval, save the certificate in several places: on the phone, in a cloud account and as an offline PDF. A paper copy remains useful because a battery may fail, mobile data may not work immediately after landing and the airline may ask to see evidence of entry permission before boarding.
Fraudulent and high-fee intermediary websites are a significant risk. The official Cambodian e-Visa service uses the government domain evisa.gov.kh. A page that imitates official colours, charges an unexplained premium or insists on a mandatory paid consultation should be treated cautiously. Check the web address before uploading a passport image or making a payment.
Visa on arrival
Eligible travellers can obtain a category T tourist visa after landing at Cambodia's international airports. This option is useful when a trip is arranged at short notice, online payment is unavailable or there is insufficient time for e-Visa processing. It is still a visa application rather than guaranteed admission. Eligibility, passport condition and the immigration officer's assessment remain relevant.
The tourist visa on arrival is generally issued for a single stay of up to 30 days and commonly carries a US$30 fee. Travellers should have a passport meeting the validity requirement and follow current instructions on photographs and payment. Even where digital payment or e-Arrival data is used, carrying clean US-dollar notes provides a backup if a card, terminal or internet connection fails.
The visa is not inferior to an e-Visa in the length of stay it normally permits. The difference is when the application is assessed. With an e-Visa, the review happens before departure. With a visa on arrival, the traveller deals with the form, fee and document check after landing, often before the normal immigration queue.
A visa on arrival is less comfortable for anyone with a damaged passport, complex nationality issue or uncertainty about eligibility. In those circumstances, obtaining an e-Visa in advance or seeking written guidance from a Cambodian embassy can reduce the risk of trying to resolve the issue at an airport counter.
Land travel requires a separate check. Confirm that the crossing is open to foreign travellers, that it issues the required visa category and that it accepts the chosen form of visa. As of early August 2026, land crossings between Thailand and Cambodia remained suspended following the border conflict and later ceasefire. An old itinerary through Poipet is not evidence that the crossing is operating on the day of travel. Conditions near border areas can change quickly, so official government travel advice and local authorities should be checked immediately before departure.
A category T tourist visa can generally be extended once in Cambodia for a further month. It does not become a basis for employment, study or long-term residence. Someone planning extended residence, work or repeated renewals should investigate the appropriate visa category before travelling rather than assuming that a tourist visa can be converted into any status required later.
Cambodia e-Arrival is not a visa
Cambodia e-Arrival is a free digital arrival form used primarily by passengers arriving on international flights. It combines immigration information, a health declaration, a customs declaration and a digital visa-on-arrival module. It does not determine whether a traveller is entitled to enter. That entitlement comes from the relevant visa or visa exemption.
Cambodian immigration guidance states that e-Arrival may be submitted within seven days before arrival or completed at the airport. For most air passengers, advance submission through the official website arrival.gov.kh or the official Cambodia e-Arrival application is easier. The form itself is free. A website charging for the mandatory form is acting as an intermediary or imitating the official service.
The form asks for passport details, flight information, first accommodation in Cambodia and information required for immigration, health and customs processing. Save the exact address of the first hotel or residence before beginning. Searching for a district, street and property name on weak airport Wi-Fi is an unnecessary complication after a long flight.
After submission, the system provides a confirmation or QR code. Save it offline with the visa certificate. Each traveller, including each child, needs an individual record. One parent's QR code does not replace a child's submission.
Being able to complete the form at the airport is a useful fallback, not the best primary plan. Phones run out of power, airport networks become congested and self-service stations can fill with passengers from the same arrival. A few minutes before departure usually saves more time after landing.
The label *Electronic Visa on Arrival* inside the e-Arrival system can create further confusion. That module helps prepare the visa-on-arrival process. It does not turn the wider e-Arrival form into a visa. A traveller with an e-Visa still submits e-Arrival, while an eligible traveller without an e-Visa can use the arrival system and then complete the visa-on-arrival procedure.
Choosing the most practical route
For most tourists, the e-Visa is convenient because it moves document checking to the period before travel. Visa on arrival preserves last-minute flexibility but leaves the process until the airport. e-Arrival is not an alternative to either option; it accompanies the applicable entry route.
| Situation | Practical approach | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Flights booked well in advance | e-Visa plus e-Arrival | Visa decision is available before departure |
| Departure in one or two days | Visa on arrival, if eligible, plus e-Arrival | No need to wait for online processing |
| Entry by land | Check the exact crossing before payment | Not every crossing is open or accepts e-Visas |
| Passport qualifies for visa-free entry | Passport plus e-Arrival for air entry | No visa is needed, but arrival data is still required |
| Planned stay exceeds 30 days | Review another visa category | Tourist status is intended for a short stay |
For a planned holiday arriving in Phnom Penh or Siem Reap, the calmest sequence is usually to obtain the tourist e-Visa through the official portal and submit e-Arrival during the week before the flight. Visa on arrival remains a valid backup for eligible travellers, but it offers little advantage to someone who can complete the process at home.
A connecting itinerary may create additional requirements outside Cambodia. The transit country and airline can have their own document rules, and the carrier will check whether the passenger appears admissible at the destination. A saved draft application is not the same as an approved e-Visa certificate.
What to save before departure
Travel documents should not depend on one telephone, one email account or immediate mobile access. A useful travel folder includes:
- a passport with the required validity and sufficient blank space;
- an approved e-Visa or a confirmed plan to obtain a visa on arrival;
- the e-Arrival confirmation or QR code for every traveller;
- the first accommodation booking with address and contact details;
- an onward or return ticket where requested by the airline or immigration authorities;
- clean US-dollar notes for a visa on arrival and a small payment reserve;
- offline and cloud copies of the passport, visa and travel insurance;
- a passport-style photograph if current guidance recommends one.
Before closing the folder, compare the passport number, date of birth and name spelling across every document. An error copied from one form to another remains an error even if payment was accepted. An e-Visa linked to an expired or replaced passport does not automatically move to the new document.
The airline may ask to see the visa, onward ticket and passport validity before luggage is checked in. Keep the documents accessible rather than placing the only copies in checked baggage.
Common mistakes that disrupt entry
The most expensive mistake is selecting the first sponsored search result and assuming that it is a government website. Unofficial services can copy official branding while charging much more or collecting sensitive passport data. Use evisa.gov.kh for the e-Visa and arrival.gov.kh for the free arrival form.
The second mistake is confusing visa validity with permitted stay. Three months of validity does not mean three months in Cambodia. It normally means a three-month window for entry, followed by a stay of up to 30 days. The dates shown on the approval and entry stamp should take priority over calculations from memory.
The third mistake is buying an e-Visa for an entry point that does not accept it, or planning a land route from an outdated guide. Check the official list before payment and check the border status again immediately before travel.
The fourth mistake is assuming that an approved e-Visa cancels the e-Arrival requirement. The two procedures collect different information. A missing e-Arrival record can usually be completed after landing, but this adds an avoidable stop before immigration.
The fifth mistake is using tourist status for non-tourist activity. A short holiday and ordinary sightseeing fit category T. Employment, long-term residence, study or repeated extensions require a different immigration plan. Beginning with the wrong category can result in an unnecessary exit and fresh application.
The practical conclusion
Tourist entry to Cambodia in 2026 is easiest to understand as two linked procedures. A tourist e-Visa, visa on arrival or visa exemption provides the basis for entry. The free Cambodia e-Arrival form supplies trip-specific immigration, health and customs information.
For a planned journey, the e-Visa is generally the least stressful choice: a single entry, an intended stay of up to 30 days and a decision before boarding. Visa on arrival is useful for last-minute travel but requires time, documents and a payment method at the airport. In both cases, keep the e-Arrival QR code, visa evidence and passport details available offline.
This article is general information, not individual immigration or consular advice. Visa exemptions, authorised entry points, border operations, fees and technical procedures can change. Recheck the official Cambodian government services and the airline's requirements shortly before travel.

Frequently asked
Does every tourist need a visa for Cambodia?
No. Visa requirements depend on the passport used for travel. Some nationalities receive a visa exemption, while others need a tourist e-Visa or visa on arrival.
Does Cambodia e-Arrival replace a tourist visa?
No. e-Arrival is a free digital arrival form covering immigration, health and customs information. The right to enter comes from a visa or an applicable visa exemption.
How long is a Cambodian tourist e-Visa valid?
The tourist e-Visa is generally valid for entry within three months of issue and permits one stay of up to 30 days after arrival. Travellers should confirm the dates printed on their approval.
Can Cambodia e-Arrival be completed at the airport?
The system allows submission within seven days before arrival or at the airport, but completing it in advance usually saves time at immigration.
