Essential Apps for Living in Cambodia
You do not need to install every Cambodian app before arrival. For the first few days, a map, one primary ride-hailing service, one backup transport app, a messaging app and a workable payment method are usually enough. Other services become useful only after you have a Cambodian phone number, a local bank account, a permanent address or a utility customer number.
The common mistake is to copy an old “must-have apps” list without checking whether the services still operate independently, cover the relevant city or require a local account. Cambodia’s digital market changes quickly: platforms merge, coverage expands or contracts, and financial or utility apps may be unusable without local onboarding.
This guide focuses on what each app actually solves, what information it requires and where a non-digital backup remains necessary.
Install apps in stages, not all at once
Before travel, prioritise services that help you reach your accommodation, navigate and communicate. After obtaining a local SIM, add apps that rely on a Cambodian number. Banking and utility tools make sense only when you have the corresponding account or customer reference.
A sensible pre-arrival set is:
- Google Maps or another familiar map, with key areas saved offline;
- Grab;
- PassApp or TADA as a backup ride option;
- Telegram, WhatsApp or Messenger;
- your airline and accommodation-booking apps;
- a password manager;
- an authenticator app for two-factor authentication.
After activating a local SIM, consider adding:
- foodpanda;
- Bakong Tourists or a local bank app, depending on your status;
- the official app for your mobile operator;
- Khmer24;
- BookMeBus;
- an electricity or water app if the account is in your name;
- Cambodia Post tracking saved as an official bookmark or app.
| Stage | Useful tools | Main purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Before arrival | Maps, Grab, messaging | Arrival and communication |
| After local SIM | Backup rides, delivery, operator app | Everyday services |
| After settling in | Bank, EDC, PPWSA | Payments and bills |
Avoid attaching your main savings card to every service immediately. For transport and delivery, a separate card with a limited balance can reduce exposure while you confirm that the service, saved address and billing process work correctly.
Ride-hailing apps
Ride-hailing is especially useful in Phnom Penh because it combines price visibility with a map pin. That is often easier than negotiating a fare on the street or explaining an address verbally.
Grab
Grab is the broadest single-platform option for many residents. Depending on the city and current availability, the app may offer cars, tuk-tuks, food delivery, groceries and courier services.
The most important setup step is the pickup pin. Automatic location can place it in the middle of a large condominium, on the wrong side of a divided road or at a closed gate. Move it to the entrance where a driver can actually stop.
For airports, shopping centres and large developments, use the designated pickup area. The driver may ask you to walk to a particular gate because stopping at the main door is restricted.
Grab’s main advantage is that one account can cover several everyday needs. Its limitation is that fares, driver availability and pickup times vary during rain, rush hour and major holidays.
PassApp
PassApp is a Cambodian ride-hailing platform offering several vehicle types, including rickshaws, tuk-tuks and cars. It is useful as a backup when Grab has limited availability or a less attractive fare.
Coverage should be checked in the app for the exact city and vehicle category. The company lists offices in Phnom Penh and several provincial cities, but an office or nominal city presence does not guarantee immediate driver supply in every neighbourhood.
Before the first ride, confirm:
- the phone number attached to the account;
- the pickup point;
- the destination pin;
- the payment method;
- the vehicle and driver details.
TADA
TADA is another ride-hailing option available in the region and promotes a zero-commission model for drivers. For a passenger, its practical value is simply that it can provide another pool of vehicles when the main app is slow.
There is no need to use three ride apps every day. One primary and one backup are usually enough. Keep a third only if your neighbourhood or schedule makes availability inconsistent.
Safety checks before getting in
Do not enter a vehicle merely because the driver says your name. Compare the number plate or vehicle details, driver photo and destination shown in the app.
If a driver asks you to cancel the ride and continue privately, you lose the app’s trip record and a clear route to support. That may not always indicate fraud, but it weakens your protection.
For late journeys, share the trip with a trusted person where the app permits. If you feel unsafe, ending the trip in a busy, well-lit place is preferable to arguing while the vehicle is moving.
Food, groceries and small deliveries
Delivery can replace several separate errands, but it is useful to keep two functioning platforms. One may not serve your address, may have fewer restaurants or may be temporarily unavailable.
GrabFood and other Grab services
GrabFood operates within the main Grab app. Depending on location, groceries, retail orders and courier delivery may also be available.
Save the taxi pickup point and delivery entrance separately. A passenger may be collected from the main lobby, while couriers may have to use a service gate or leave orders at reception.
A useful delivery note includes:
- the building name;
- tower or block;
- correct entrance;
- reception or floor information;
- whether to call on arrival.
Do not place a permanent door code in a reusable delivery note. Meet the courier downstairs or use a temporary access code where the building supports one.
foodpanda
foodpanda remains another major food and grocery platform in Cambodia. Restaurant and shop availability varies by city and neighbourhood.
The same outlet can show different promotions, menu pricing, minimum order values and delivery times across platforms. Compare the final payable amount rather than the headline discount. Delivery, service and small-order fees can materially change the total.
Nham24 and older app lists
Older Cambodia guides often recommend Nham24 as a separate app. Grab and Nham24 announced that they were joining forces, and service integration subsequently moved customers towards the Grab platform. Because app migration can change by release and account, check the current official notice rather than relying on a 2023 or early-2024 tutorial.
The broader lesson is important: app names can remain in search results and old videos long after the practical ordering route changes.
Review the order before paying
Before confirmation, check that:
- The map pin is at the correct entrance.
- Your local phone number is active.
- The correct size, variation or product has been selected.
- The final total includes all fees.
- The payment method is actually available to you.
- Reception is willing to accept the order.
- The note does not reveal unnecessary personal information.
If an item is unavailable, the shop may propose a substitute. Do not approve it automatically where price, size or ingredients matter. This is particularly important for medicines, infant food and products involving allergies.
KHQR, Bakong and banking apps
QR payments are deeply embedded in everyday Cambodian commerce. However, a foreign bank card and a phone camera do not automatically allow payment to every KHQR code. Access depends on the app, participating institution, account type and current card support.
Bakong Tourists
The National Bank of Cambodia developed Bakong Tourists for international visitors. Official materials describe registration by email and the ability to fund the account using supported Visa or Mastercard cards, then pay participating merchants through KHQR.
Before relying on it, confirm:
- that the app is available in your app store;
- that your issuing bank and card are supported;
- funding and foreign-exchange fees;
- transaction and balance limits;
- identity-verification requirements;
- the process for withdrawing or refunding any remaining balance;
- how account recovery works if the phone is lost.
The app can reduce dependence on cash, but it should not be your only payment method. A flat battery, lost phone, weak connection or merchant-side issue can still interrupt a transaction.
Local bank apps
For long-term residents, the main financial app is often the app provided by their Cambodian bank. Participating banks generally support transfers and KHQR payments through Cambodia’s domestic payment infrastructure.
Examples include ABA Mobile and ACLEDA mobile, alongside services offered by other regulated institutions. Do not choose a bank solely because its app is popular. Compare:
- account-opening requirements;
- supported currencies;
- international-transfer options;
- cash access;
- card fees;
- support quality;
- transaction limits;
- source-of-funds requirements;
- account-recovery procedures.
A local account may be convenient, but eligibility depends on the bank, visa or residence evidence, phone number and customer due-diligence checks.
Paying safely by QR code
Before confirming, read the payment screen carefully:
- recipient name;
- currency;
- amount;
- payment note;
- whether the code belongs to the business, landlord or an individual employee;
- whether the details match the invoice or agreement.
A printed QR sticker can be replaced physically. If the displayed recipient does not make sense, stop and ask before paying.
Keep the transaction record until the goods, rent receipt or service confirmation is received. For a deposit, property payment or other significant transfer, a screenshot alone is insufficient; retain the bank transaction record, written payment purpose and formal receipt.

Contact usTelegramMaps and saved locations
Google Maps is generally sufficient for finding businesses and navigating cities, but listings can be outdated and the actual entrance may be on another street.
For a home, save two different pins where necessary:
- the passenger pickup point;
- the delivery or service entrance.
Before travelling to a province, island or rural area, download the relevant offline map. Mobile coverage is common on major routes but can be inconsistent in remote areas.
Do not use a map listing as the authoritative legal address. For leases, banks, insurance and postal deliveries, use the formal address containing the building, street, sangkat, khan and correct postcode.
Translation tools and their limits
Google Translate or a similar app can help with menus, simple instructions and short messages to a driver or technician. Khmer machine translation may be inaccurate, particularly for legal, medical and technical language.
For better results, write short, direct sentences. A complex paragraph containing several conditions is more likely to be distorted.
Do not sign a contract, give medical consent or make a significant financial decision based only on machine translation. Use a qualified person who understands both the language and the subject matter.
Messaging apps
Telegram, Messenger, WhatsApp and in-app chat are all used in Cambodia. No single messaging platform is universal across landlords, drivers, schools, clinics and service providers.
Telegram plus one widely used international messenger is a practical baseline. Important agreements should be kept in a channel where messages, documents and payment confirmations can be retrieved later.
A request to move from an official support chat to a personal account is not automatically fraudulent, but it reduces platform protections. Never send banking passwords, card details, one-time codes or unprotected passport copies to an unknown contact.
Mobile-operator apps
After buying a local SIM or eSIM, install the official app for the chosen operator. It can show:
- balance;
- data allowance;
- package expiry;
- automatic renewal;
- top-up options;
- linked services;
- the phone number used for registration.
A large remaining data balance does not mean the package has no expiry date. Review renewal conditions before adding credit.
Do not delete an eSIM profile or reset the phone until you understand how the operator reissues it. A replacement QR code may require identity checks or a store visit.
Keep the Cambodian number active if it is connected to a bank, lease, delivery accounts or two-factor authentication. Before a long trip abroad, check the minimum top-up or activity needed to prevent deactivation.
Khmer24, Marketplace and person-to-person transactions
Khmer24 is widely used for property, vehicles, electronics, furniture and services. It can help residents understand asking prices, buy used household goods or sell items before moving.
The platform introduces buyers and sellers; it does not make every transaction safe. For an expensive item:
- meet in a safe place;
- inspect and test the item;
- check serial numbers and documents;
- do not send a large deposit to an unknown person;
- never provide an SMS verification code;
- do not use a payment link sent by the supposed buyer;
- verify ownership where the asset requires registration.
Walk away if the seller creates artificial urgency, refuses inspection or demands full payment before meeting.
Facebook Marketplace and local groups can also be useful, but account age and profile photos do not prove ownership or identity. Passport images can be stolen.
For property, listing apps are useful for market research, not a substitute for viewing, ownership checks and a written lease or purchase contract.
Electricity and water apps
Utility apps are relevant only where you have access to the customer account. Many tenants pay the owner or building management instead of dealing directly with the provider.
EDC
Electricité du Cambodge’s customer services can allow users to review bills, consumption history and selected notices when they have the relevant customer number.
If a condominium sub-meters electricity internally, the EDC account may show only the building’s main connection. The resident then needs meter readings and the management company’s tariff calculation.
PPWSA
The Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority app provides services such as bill information and customer requests for connected accounts.
Again, a condominium may have one master water account, with the building billing each unit separately. The app cannot display a private apartment account that does not exist in PPWSA’s system.
Before relying on any utility app, ask whether the tenancy has a direct provider account or an internal building account.
Cambodia Post and parcel tracking
For mail and parcels, the official tracking number is more important than installing many similarly named apps. Use Cambodia Post’s official website or an app linked from the official service.
A fake parcel app or website can be used to collect card details and one-time codes. If you receive a message demanding a small “redelivery” or “customs” payment, verify the tracking number independently through the known carrier.
Government and utility apps can be updated less frequently than commercial services. If a customer number is rejected, check the format with the provider rather than entering the details into an unofficial site.
Booking travel between cities
BookMeBus can be used to compare and book buses, private transfers and some regional connections in Cambodia and neighbouring countries.
Before paying, check:
- the exact boarding location;
- required arrival time;
- vehicle type;
- baggage policy;
- cancellation and refund terms;
- transfer arrangements;
- whether a paper ticket is required;
- the operator’s contact information.
A ticket that says “Phnom Penh” does not necessarily depart from a central bus terminal. Many operators use their own offices in different parts of the city.
For island ferries, confirm the exact pier at both ends. Sihanoukville has multiple departure points, and islands may have several jetties. Choosing the wrong one can require another taxi or boat transfer.
If another booking platform is undergoing maintenance or its support is unreachable, use a service whose timetable and customer assistance can be verified at the time of purchase.
Apps you do not need immediately
More apps do not automatically create more convenience. Some duplicate one another, collect unnecessary data or remain unused.
You do not need to install immediately:
- every bank app before choosing a bank;
- three delivery platforms where one fully covers your area;
- utility apps without a customer number;
- an old standalone Nham24 app because an outdated video recommends it;
- APK files from unknown sources;
- “official” government apps that are not linked from an agency website;
- multiple translation apps with broad photo, microphone and clipboard access;
- obscure wallets for a one-time discount.
Before installation, verify the developer, official website link, update history, permissions and recent reviews. A convincing logo and high rating do not prove authenticity.
Permissions should match the function. A map needs location while in use; a classifieds app normally does not need continuous access to your microphone or contacts.
Secure your phone for everyday life
After setting up the essentials:
- save the Cambodian number in international format
+855, removing the first zero; - update the number in transport, delivery and banking accounts;
- enable two-factor authentication for email and financial services;
- store recovery codes away from the phone;
- use a strong screen lock;
- hide sensitive notification content on the lock screen;
- keep the operating system and apps updated;
- use a protected folder for passport and visa copies;
- remove temporary document copies from chats and downloads;
- save essential contacts outside the apps themselves.
A stolen phone becomes a much larger problem when it also provides access to the SIM, email, banking notifications and recovery codes.
Create one folder for transport, delivery, bank, operator, utilities, travel and post. Save the building address, reception number, insurer and bank support details in an offline note.
Download boarding passes, insurance documents and accommodation details before travelling to an area with uncertain coverage.
Practical app sets for different users
A visitor staying one or two weeks usually needs maps, Grab, a backup transport app, food delivery, Bakong Tourists where appropriate, messaging and ticket apps.
A resident renting for several months may add an operator app, local banking, Khmer24, BookMeBus and utility services where the account permits.
A family needs reliable school, clinic, insurer and delivery contacts more than an enormous app collection. Duplicate the essential phone numbers in the address book and offline notes.
A remote worker should also maintain backup mobile data, secure cloud storage, a reputable VPN where lawfully used and robust account-recovery methods. A VPN should not be used to evade legal or banking restrictions.
A property owner may need banking, utilities, building-management chat and secure document storage. Apps do not replace written leases, invoices and periodic account reconciliation.
| User | Essential set | Useful later |
|---|---|---|
| Short visit | Maps, rides, messaging | Bakong Tourists |
| Long-term resident | Bank, operator, delivery | EDC, PPWSA |
| Domestic traveller | Maps, BookMeBus | Offline tickets |
Conclusion
For the first days in Cambodia, install maps, Grab, one backup ride app, food delivery, messaging and a practical payment tool. Add the operator app, local banking, Khmer24, BookMeBus and utility services only when you have the corresponding number, account or need.
Do not rely on an old app list without checking current official information. Platforms merge, coverage changes and an app that still appears in search results may no longer be the correct route to the service.
The most useful setup is not the longest. It is a small group of verified apps with the correct phone number, entrance pin, address and backup payment method.

Frequently asked
Which apps are useful before arriving in Cambodia?
A map, Grab, one backup ride-hailing service, a messaging app, the relevant airline or accommodation app and tools for password and two-factor-authentication security are usually enough.
Can a tourist pay KHQR without a Cambodian bank account?
Bakong Tourists is designed for that purpose, but card compatibility, fees, limits and current onboarding requirements should be checked before travel.
Does every tenant need the EDC and PPWSA apps?
No. They are useful only where the tenant has the relevant customer number and access to that utility account. In many condominiums, building management issues an internal bill instead.
