NovTecho International Airport: How to Get to Central Phnom Penh
Techo International Airport is not on the edge of the old urban core in the way Phnom Penh's former airport was. It lies south of the capital in Kandal Province, and a car journey to central districts commonly takes around 45 minutes or more. In evening traffic, heavy rain or on a trip to the north of the city, the same journey can take 90 minutes or longer.
For most first-time arrivals, the easiest option is an official taxi or a car ordered through Grab, PassApp or WowNow. The lowest-cost option is the Airport Express Bus. It costs only a small fraction of a taxi fare, but it takes you to a bus stop rather than directly to your hotel.
The most important point is to avoid using an old airport guide. Since 9 September 2025, Phnom Penh's main commercial flights have operated through Techo International Airport, whose IATA code is KTI. Directions built around the former PNH terminal, the old city bus or the former rail shuttle no longer describe a normal arrival at the capital's active international airport.
Where Techo International Airport is
The airport's official website places KTI roughly 20 kilometres south of Phnom Penh. That figure is best understood as a broad city-distance reference. If your destination is the Independence Monument, Central Market, Wat Phnom or the riverside, the actual road journey is longer and varies with the route used.
Traffic generally heads from the airport towards Samdech Techo Hun Sen Boulevard and the new southern approaches to Phnom Penh. The outer section can move relatively well. Journey times become less predictable closer to built-up districts, where the same number of kilometres may take very different amounts of time in the morning, afternoon and evening.
"Central Phnom Penh" is also not a single destination. A leisure traveller may mean the Riverside, Royal Palace, Central Market or Wat Phnom. A business traveller may be staying in BKK1 or Tonle Bassac around the Independence Monument. Reaching southern and south-eastern districts is usually quicker than continuing to Toul Kork, Sen Sok or the northern side of Daun Penh.
Before choosing transport, look at your exact hotel rather than simply comparing a quoted "airport to city centre" time.
How long the journey takes
Without serious congestion, a car to BKK1, Tonle Bassac or the Independence Monument area can often take around 40-60 minutes. For the Riverside, Central Market or Wat Phnom, allowing 50-75 minutes is more realistic. These are planning ranges, not promises: traffic conditions can change far more quickly than the distance shown on a map.
During peak periods, use the upper end of the range and add another 20-30 minutes. Weekday inbound traffic can be heavy in the morning, while central streets often slow in the evening. A tropical downpour can also add substantial time even where there is no permanent bottleneck.

These ranges are useful because the airport transfer is only one part of the arrival. Immigration, baggage reclaim, walking through the terminal and finding the vehicle all add time. Avoid arranging an important meeting immediately after landing.
Official taxis and ride-hailing apps
Techo International Airport's official transport information lists standard taxis and app-based services including Grab, WowNow and PassApp. It gives an approximate fare of $10-20 to Phnom Penh, depending on the drop-off point. The final amount can vary with destination, vehicle type, traffic and demand.
For a first visit, ride-hailing apps have two advantages. The destination can be pinned directly on a map, and the fare or fare estimate is shown before the trip is confirmed. In the app, select Techo International Airport or KTI as the pick-up location and follow the current instructions for the designated meeting area. Airport pick-up zones can change, so live app guidance and terminal signs are more reliable than an old photo online.
An official airport taxi is useful when you do not have mobile data, the app does not accept your phone number or you simply do not want to search for a pick-up point after a long flight. Use the marked taxi counter or official queue. Confirm the full fare to the exact hotel before getting into the car rather than accepting a vague estimate.
A tuk-tuk may appear as an option in some ride-hailing apps. It can be cheaper than a closed car, but KTI is a relatively long journey from central Phnom Penh. In rain, after a night flight, with a large suitcase or with young children, a car is substantially more comfortable. A tuk-tuk makes more sense with light luggage, fair weather and a destination in the southern or central part of the city.

Airport Express Bus
The Airport Express Bus is the cheapest public-transport option between KTI and Phnom Penh. The official airport website states that it operates every day from 05:30 to 23:30. The service is run by Phnom Penh City Bus under Phnom Penh City Hall.
The airport-to-city route travels along Samdech Techo Hun Sen Boulevard, continues via Monivong Boulevard and terminates at Kouch Kanong Circle Bus Station near Chroy Changvar Bridge. Four intermediate stops are particularly useful:
- AEON Mall Mean Chey, serving the southern part of the city and the airport corridor.
- BRED Bank on Samdech Techo Hun Sen Boulevard.
- Royal University of Law and Economics, useful for parts of BKK1, Tonle Bassac and Toul Tom Poung.
- Canadia Garden, in front of the railway station, which is the most useful stop for Central Market, the central railway station and much of Daun Penh.
Kouch Kanong is north of the historic centre, so staying on the bus to the terminus is not automatically the best choice. For many Riverside and central hotels, getting off at Canadia Garden and completing the journey by tuk-tuk or ride-hailing car is more efficient.
Practical transport guides in 2026 report a fare of 1,500 riel. Because fares and payment arrangements can change, check the notice at the stop or on the bus before boarding. Carrying small-denomination riel is useful; a large US-dollar note is inconvenient for such a low fare.
The official airport page confirms regular service but does not guarantee a precise headway in its main text. Independent 2026 guides have reported frequent departures, including intervals of around ten minutes at some times, but it is better to plan around the operating window rather than assume a bus will arrive at an exact minute.
Allow roughly 60-90 minutes for the bus journey in normal conditions, plus any waiting time and the final transfer to your hotel. Peak traffic can make it longer.
The bus has to serve airport passengers, but it is still public transport rather than a private airport coach with guaranteed assigned seating and door-to-door luggage handling. With two large suitcases, a pushchair or several young children, the low fare may not compensate for the extra handling.
Pre-booked private transfers
A hotel or private transfer removes two decisions after landing: the driver already knows the flight details and the price has been agreed in advance. This is particularly useful for families, groups of three or four, passengers with bulky luggage and travellers arriving after the bus has stopped.
There is no single official tariff for private transfers. The hotel or operator should confirm the total price, vehicle type, included waiting time and any fee for a long flight delay. A higher price does not automatically mean a better transfer, so make sure you know what is included.
Before departure, send the operator the flight number, date, scheduled landing time, lead passenger name, number of travellers and approximate luggage. Ask for a clear meeting point or a photograph of the meeting area. KTI is a large terminal, and "meet at arrivals" can be too vague when several exits and pick-up zones are in use.
Car rental is also available at the airport, including through international providers. For a first arrival in Phnom Penh, however, self-driving is rarely the simplest option. Traffic behaviour, parking, navigation and insurance conditions all need to be understood. A car with a driver usually provides the same door-to-door freedom without requiring you to drive immediately after a flight.
Choosing transport by district
The best option depends as much on the final two or three kilometres as on the airport fare. The bus works well when your accommodation is close to its corridor or you are comfortable making one short onward connection. If the hotel is far from Monivong Boulevard, the saving becomes less attractive because you have to wait for the bus, travel to a suitable stop and then arrange another ride.
For BKK1 and Tonle Bassac, two approaches work. The simplest is a direct car from the airport. The budget alternative is the bus to the Royal University of Law and Economics area followed by a short ride-hailing trip. For a solo traveller with a backpack, the second can be excellent value. For a family with luggage, it introduces an unnecessary transfer.
For the Riverside, Royal Palace and Central Market area, Canadia Garden is the most useful central bus stop. Many hotels are still a few kilometres away, so walking with luggage is usually a poor idea. Phnom Penh pavements are inconsistent, crossings can be busy and the heat remains significant even in the evening.
For Toul Kork, Sen Sok and other northern residential districts, a direct car is usually more sensible. The bus first travels through the central corridor and you still need another ride north, increasing both time and handling.

For most first-time visitors, compare the ride-hailing price with the official taxi quote. If the fare is close to the airport's published $10-20 range and the vehicle is large enough for your luggage, paying slightly more for a direct ride is often worthwhile.
What to prepare before leaving the terminal
Save the hotel not only by name but also as a map pin. Similar property names are common, and a street description in a booking confirmation may not be enough for navigation. A screenshot showing the address, hotel phone number and entrance can be helpful if mobile data fails.
Install and register your ride-hailing app before travelling if possible. After baggage reclaim, compare the available vehicle classes and make sure the pick-up point is KTI. There is no need to accept an unsolicited driver simply because they approach first. Establish the destination and total fare before boarding.
For the bus, have small riel notes ready and know which stop you intend to use. Showing the stop name to the driver or staff before boarding can prevent confusion. Mobile data remains useful even on the budget option because you may need a short ride from the bus stop to the hotel.
If your flight is scheduled to land close to 23:30, do not build the plan around catching the final bus. Immigration, baggage reclaim and walking to the stop can easily push you beyond the operating window. Treat a car as the base plan and the bus as a possible saving if everything runs quickly.
Getting back to KTI
The return journey deserves a larger margin than the arrival transfer. Reaching a hotel late is inconvenient; missing an international flight can be expensive.
Start with the check-in or arrival-at-airport time recommended by your airline, then add enough road time for the district and time of day. From central Phnom Penh, allow at least an hour for the drive under ordinary conditions and 90 minutes or more when traffic is likely to be heavy.
The Airport Express Bus operates in the opposite direction from Kouch Kanong Circle Bus Station through the central stops to KTI. Make sure you are waiting on the correct side of the road because the AEB stop numbers differ by direction. Recheck the schedule on the day of departure rather than assuming the bus will appear immediately.
When booking a car, set the destination as Techo International Airport, KTI. Old saved addresses and messages referring to PNH can create confusion because PNH was the code associated with Phnom Penh's former main airport. Check the map before confirming: the route should head south towards KTI.
A useful rule is to build the airport transfer backwards from the time you want to be inside the terminal, not forwards from the time you would ideally like to leave your hotel.
