Free breast screening accompanied Phnom Penh's AIA Pink Run

Publication date

A public health initiative alongside the race

The fourth AIA Pink Run took place near Wat Botum Vatey Park in central Phnom Penh on 25 October. The National Olympic Committee of Cambodia worked with AIA Cambodia and event partners to organise the run, which included 10 km, 5 km and 2.5 km distances. Breast cancer awareness and access to screening formed part of the day's activities.

AKP reported on 26 October that the race drew 3,615 people from 36 countries. It also said thousands of women benefited from free breast cancer screening. The two figures describe different activities: the number of runners is not a verified count of screening recipients.

The committee's secretary-general, Vath Chamroeun, described the event as helping women reach screening and treatment services. His comments did not come with data on diagnoses, referrals or completed treatment, so those outcomes cannot be inferred from the turnout.

The limits of a one-day screening offer

The available report leaves several practical questions unanswered. It gives no precise screening total and does not specify which procedures were performed, whether clinical examinations or imaging were involved, or what follow-up arrangements were available. It therefore provides evidence of access to a free service on the day, not a measure of the programme's medical outcomes.

For residents of Phnom Penh, the event is an example of preventive health services being made available in a public setting. Anyone considering a breast examination after 25 October should not assume that the same free programme is still operating at the park. The organisers' event information refers to the completed date, and AKP did not announce an ongoing clinic or a repeat schedule.

A person seeking care now will need to confirm the available examination, appointment arrangements and any subsequent costs with a medical provider. The appropriate next step following any screening depends on the clinician's findings and individual circumstances.
