Floods in Cambodia affected 57,980 families by September 28
Let’s explore this page together
The September 28 update marked a sharp three-day escalation
The scale of the flooding changed quickly. On September 25, NCDM figures cited by Cambodianess put the number of affected families at 16,789. By September 27 the count had reached 44,889, and reporting based on the September 28 update put it at 57,980. The evacuation figure rose from 2,016 families to 4,819 over the same period.
The September 28 data also listed 51,874 affected homes and 72,440 hectares of rice fields. Battambang accounted for 1,487 evacuated families and Banteay Meanchey for 1,481, while 173 families were evacuated in Siem Reap. Flooding was reported across 10 provinces, including Kampong Cham, Kampong Thom, Pailin, Preah Vihear, Pursat, Tbong Khmum and Kratie.
Not every source carried the same operational total. Agence Kampuchea Presse reported about 44,800 affected families and roughly 3,600 evacuated around the same date. Those differences are a reason to read the numbers as time-stamped emergency assessments rather than a final nationwide damage count; the 57,980 figure is the NCDM total carried by Cambodianess and Vietnam News Agency reporting for September 28.
For residents, long-term renters and people travelling through the affected provinces, the nationwide total is less useful than local conditions. Road access, neighbourhood flooding and evacuation arrangements can change faster than a national update, particularly in Battambang and Banteay Meanchey. Local authority notices therefore remain the most relevant source for immediate route and access decisions.
For practical context, see Cambodia market and country comparisons. This development also connects with Cambodia floods affect over 25,500 families in 10 provinces.
Later crop figures show the emergency was still evolving
A later NCDM assessment cited on October 3 put the area of rice fields affected by flooding at 156,125 hectares as of September 30, more than double the September 28 figure. Cambodia's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said the damage was not expected to threaten national food security or rice exports, but the updated figure shows that the impact was still being reassessed after the family count reported on September 28.
The two figures describe different snapshots and should not be merged: 57,980 is the affected-family count for September 28, while 156,125 hectares is a later agricultural assessment for September 30. For someone deciding whether to travel, rent or return to a home in an affected area, that distinction matters because recovery can vary sharply between provinces and even between districts within the same province.
