Kampong Cham teacher training upgrade gets ¥1.189bn JICA grant
Let’s explore this page together
The June agreement secures ¥1.189bn for the upgrade
The JICA grant agreement sets a maximum contribution of ¥1.189 billion. Cambodia's state news agency AKP described the amount as roughly US$7.5 million at the time of signing.
Cambodia's Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport is the executing agency. JICA says the project is intended to strengthen the preparation of primary and lower-secondary teachers by upgrading existing teacher-training institutions in Kampong Cham to a four-year Teacher Education College model.
The agreement is a funding milestone, not an opening date. JICA's published plan allows 40 months for implementation, with facility construction expected to take about 28 months.
For practical context, see Cambodia market and country comparisons. This development also connects with Cambodia and OIF sign five-year French education plan.
STEM facilities are only one part of the project
The physical works include a STEM building and a separate assembly hall. The project also covers equipment for both new and existing facilities, including laboratory resources, digital teaching tools and materials for mathematics and science education.
Here the investment is designed around how teachers are trained, not simply around adding floor space. The value of the new buildings will depend on how the equipment, teaching methods and four-year programmes operate once the facilities are ready.
This project does not create immediate new school places for children in Kampong Cham. Its direct purpose is to improve the institutions that prepare future teachers, with the intended benefit reaching basic education later through the people who enter classrooms.
The timetable therefore matters as much as the grant amount. Construction, equipment delivery and programme rollout still have to occur before the upgraded college can be judged by its effect on local schools. The June agreement confirms financing and scope; it does not establish that the new facilities are already operating.
