AI is being added to a broader TVET modernisation push

The June announcement placed AI within a wider effort to keep vocational training aligned with a changing labour market. Agence Kampuchea Presse reported that the government sees skills development moving beyond traditional manufacturing into automotive and technology-led industries, with AI and innovation identified as a next area for upgrading.

The Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training added more detail when National TVET Day closed on June 16. Its published account called for TVET institutions to incorporate digital technology, AI and automation more deeply into training and to develop specialisations that reflect local economic needs. Those materials did not identify a national list of new AI courses, participating colleges, a common launch date or a dedicated budget for such programmes.

The June announcement did not create a new national AI course

For students and workers, the immediate value of the announcement is mainly in showing where the training system intends to move. It does not establish that a particular AI programme is already open for applications, or that completing an existing TVET course will lead to a technology job.

Until institutions publish specific programmes and admissions information, applicants still have to judge the options that actually exist: curriculum content, entry requirements, course length and the amount of practical training. Any future AI-focused intake will need to be assessed on its own terms rather than assumed from the national policy direction.

Official remarks around the same event also stressed instructor preparation, curriculum quality, regular assessment and the need to connect training with usable workplace skills. That matters because adding AI to a programme name says little about the quality of instruction or the employment value of the course by itself.

The June policy direction therefore gives prospective students something concrete to watch for, but not yet a new education offer to act on. A more meaningful change for an individual will come when a named institution publishes a programme with clear content, admissions rules and delivery arrangements.
