Thailand removes the afternoon break in alcohol sales
Thailand’s Alcoholic Beverage Control Committee issued the change in an announcement published in the Royal Gazette on 28 May. It took effect the following day. For most people, the difference is simple: the general rule no longer forces ordinary alcohol sales to stop for three hours in the middle of the afternoon.
The 2–5pm gap is now part of the normal sales window
The 2026 announcement replaced the previous time restriction with one continuous baseline: alcohol may generally be sold between 11am and midnight. A retailer, restaurant or other authorised seller that is not subject to a separate restriction no longer has to suspend sales from 2pm to 5pm solely because of the national time rule.
The change concerns sales hours. It does not make sales before 11am or after midnight generally legal, and it does not override licensing or location rules.
For practical context, see Thailand economy and finance. This development also connects with Thailand eases drone curbs but keeps border-zone restrictions.
11am–midnight is a baseline, not a universal timetable
The regulation itself provides exceptions for several categories, including passenger areas at international airports, licensed entertainment venues operating within their legally permitted hours, hotels, and certain specifically authorised sites or zones. Some businesses may therefore follow a different lawful schedule, while others may close earlier for ordinary operating reasons.
Thailand also retains separate alcohol-control rules beyond the clock. The minimum legal drinking age is 20, restrictions continue in specified public and transport-related places, and temporary bans may apply on elections, major Buddhist holidays or other officially designated periods. Anyone planning around the new hours should therefore treat 11am–midnight as the normal national starting point, not as permission to sell or buy alcohol in every place on every date.
