Bangkok identifies five traffic-sensitive areas for October 12–18

Event date

The meetings are being held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC), close to Benjakitti Park. The advisory, issued on October 11, is especially relevant to commuters, residents with appointments around Asok and Khlong Toei, and anyone driving between Bangkok's airports and central hotels.

The routes most likely to see disruption

Three main road corridors feature in the government's advice. On Ratchadaphisek Road, drivers should be prepared for delays between the Rama IV and Asok–Sukhumvit intersections. Sukhumvit Road is another concern around Nana, Asok and Phrom Phong, where conference delegates are staying. The Rama IV corridor near Khlong Toei and the convention center is also on the list.

The other two areas are different in character. Benjakitti Park and its surroundings have restricted access arrangements, while roads connecting Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports to central hotels may be subject to traffic management for official convoys. The government has not described these five areas as a continuous road-closure zone.

Journeys that depend on arriving at a precise time deserve particular attention. A taxi trip across central Bangkok may face intermittent delays even when every road along the route is legally open.

Police distinguish emergency powers from planned closures

A document circulated from Lumpini Police Station prompted concern that several streets would be closed throughout the conference. On October 11, the Royal Thai Police clarified that the order was intended to give officers authority to manage exceptional or urgent situations, not to impose a blanket shutdown.

Normal traffic access around QSNCC is expected to continue. Short restrictions remain possible if security operations require them, with the authorities saying advance notices will be issued. Travellers should therefore follow current traffic announcements rather than assume the same conditions will apply throughout the week.

Rail access, park entrances and the October 16 holiday

For destinations near the venue, the MRT Blue Line serves Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre station. Sukhumvit MRT station and Asok BTS station are alternatives for nearby appointments. These rail connections avoid much of the uncertainty associated with road traffic, although the walk to the final destination still needs to be considered.

Benjakitti Park will continue its usual opening hours of 4:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., but parts of the grounds are restricted from October 11–18. The connecting gates to QSNCC are closed during that period, so park visitors should use the permitted entrances from Ratchadaphisek Road or Rama IV Road. QSNCC itself is not open to general visitors during the meetings.

There are also changes to public-sector working arrangements. Bangkok government staff are scheduled to work from home on October 12, 14 and 15. October 13 is an existing national holiday. October 16 is an additional public holiday for Bangkok government offices. Private employers are not automatically covered by that decision, so opening hours for individual workplaces and services may differ.
