Thailand changes DTV supporting documents from 31 August 2026

Two supporting-document rules have changed

Thai diplomatic missions have replaced the previous document showing an applicant’s current location with proof of permanent residence. A certificate of criminal record clearance has also become a mandatory supporting document for new DTV applications.

The residence requirement is more significant than a simple paperwork update. A tourist entry, hotel booking or temporary address should not be treated as evidence of permanent residence. Several Thai missions implementing the change state that applicants must be nationals or permanent residents of the country where they file.

The criminal-record document is generally tied to the applicant’s country of nationality or permanent residence. Local missions may set their own practical requirements for the age of the certificate, translations, legalisation and the evidence they accept as proof of residence. Applicants therefore still need to check the mission that will actually handle the case rather than relying on a generic DTV checklist.

Filing from a convenient third country is now much more limited

Before the change, some DTV applicants treated the choice of embassy or consulate largely as a matter of convenience while travelling. That assumption is no longer safe. A short stay in another country does not establish permanent-resident status, and it should not be taken as evidence that the local Thai mission will accept the application.

This matters particularly to remote workers who move between countries without permanent-resident status outside their country of nationality. They now need to establish where they are eligible to file before arranging travel around the application. Criminal-record clearance may also take time to obtain, so it can become one of the items that determines the real application timeline.

The change concerns supporting documents for new DTV applications. It does not, by itself, cancel or shorten an already issued DTV, and the announcements do not require existing visa holders to resubmit these documents merely because the new rules took effect.

Earlier applications keep the previous document rules

Official notices provide a transition for applications lodged before 31 August 2026: those cases continue under the supporting-document requirements that applied before the change. Some missions describe the cutoff more specifically by referring to applications submitted and paid before that date, so applicants whose filing fell close to the transition should follow the wording used by the mission handling their case.

For new applications from 00:00 on 31 August, Thailand time, the revised requirements apply. Thai mission notices published in September describe the rules as already effective, not as a proposal or a future measure.
