Thailand paused BAHTNET on October 16: which bank payments were affected?
Why a Bangkok holiday affected payments elsewhere
The disruption was linked to an exceptional public holiday in Bangkok, introduced during Thailand's hosting of the IMF and World Bank Group Annual Meetings on October 12–18. The government announced the Bangkok holiday in May, and the Bank of Thailand subsequently designated October 16 as an additional non-working day for financial institutions in the capital.
The distinction between bank branch opening hours and shared payment infrastructure is important. Mega International Commercial Bank, for example, listed BAHTNET as unavailable at both its Bangkok offices and specified branches in Chonburi and Rayong. Some branch services outside Bangkok remained available under that bank's own timetable. A customer therefore could not assume that a branch being open meant every interbank payment route was operating.
For practical context, see Thailand economy and finance. This development also connects with Thailand to Suspend BAHTNET and Some Payments on October 16.
The payment channels named in the suspension
In a July 13 press release, the Bank of Thailand identified three affected services for Friday, October 16: transfers through BAHTNET, interbank cheque clearing and electronic bulk payments between banks. High-value transfers, cheques deposited for collection through another bank, and scheduled payroll or supplier payments were among the transactions the central bank told customers to handle in advance or defer until the next business day.
The Bank of Thailand also said it would not conduct market transactions with its financial-institution counterparties or publish the relevant financial market benchmark rates that Friday. These measures were announced ahead of the holiday; the notice did not report the status of any individual customer's transaction.
Day-to-day access to money was a separate matter. The central bank said people not using BAHTNET could continue using channels such as mobile banking, ATMs and cash deposit machines. That did not guarantee same-day settlement for every instruction submitted through a banking app: the underlying payment route and the bank's processing schedule still determine when funds arrive.
Monday, October 19 is the announced restart date
BAHTNET's return to normal service was scheduled for October 19, the first Monday after the special holiday and weekend. This is a system timetable, not confirmation that a particular payment delayed on October 16 will be credited that day. Anyone tracking an outstanding transfer needs the status supplied by the bank handling it.
For a property purchase, contractor invoice or payroll run, a processing delay can also affect contractual timing. Parties should distinguish the date an instruction was accepted from the date funds reached the beneficiary, especially where a handover or another obligation depends on payment having been received.
