Thailand recorded 20.9 million foreign arrivals in January–August 2026

Event date

Thailand's Ministry of Tourism and Sports released preliminary international arrival data for August 2026. The country recorded 2,515,319 foreign arrivals during the month, about 2.6% below the 2,583,638 reported for August 2025.

For January through August, the cumulative total reached 20,935,135 arrivals, down 3.08% year on year. The figures are national arrival counts: they do not measure hotel occupancy, overnight stays or rental demand in any particular city.

The national decline masks very different source-market trends

China remained Thailand's largest inbound market, with 3,543,272 arrivals in the first eight months, up 16.05% from a year earlier. Malaysia contributed 2,658,686 arrivals, down 11.87%, while South Korean arrivals fell 24.78% to 769,930.

India was almost flat at 1,536,770 arrivals, a 0.04% year-on-year decline. Russia accounted for 1,179,872 arrivals, down 0.55%. That divergence matters because the mix of visitors can affect destinations differently even when the national headline moves only a few percentage points.

What the data does — and does not — say about rentals

For a landlord or rental investor, national arrivals are useful context rather than an occupancy forecast. One international arrival does not automatically translate into a hotel night, a condominium booking or demand in a specific neighbourhood. A property-level view still requires provincial or city data, seasonality, accommodation occupancy, length of stay and the visitor mix relevant to that location.

For someone considering Thailand for seasonal or long-term living, the figures are more useful as a broad indicator of pressure on transport, hospitality and other visitor-facing infrastructure. Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya, Chiang Mai and less tourism-heavy areas can behave very differently, so the nationwide total should not be treated as a description of day-to-day conditions in one chosen district.
