How to Hire a Personal Driver in Bangkok for Family or Work

When a Bangkok Driver Solves a Real Problem — and When Rides on Demand Are Enough

A personal driver rarely beats ride-hailing on fare alone. The real value is continuity: the same person knows the school entrance, the office drop-off, where to wait at a hospital, which building has a difficult loading area and that an errand still needs to be done after the passenger has gone inside. When those small pieces repeat every day, you are paying for predictable availability as much as for driving.

For a family, the tipping point is often the number of fixed-time commitments rather than total kilometres. A morning school run may be followed by a pickup, an appointment and an errand without a passenger. An executive has a different pattern: several meetings, uncertain waiting periods and a late return. In both cases the car may spend part of the day parked, yet that reserved availability is exactly what on-demand transport cannot guarantee in the same way.

If your travel is occasional, a salaried driver can become an expensive solution to a problem you do not really have. There is no sensible universal break-even point against Grab because ride prices change by time, area, demand, vehicle class and traffic, while a driver's salary is only one part of the monthly cost.

Use two to four ordinary weeks of your own trip history instead. Add the journeys you avoided because waiting, transfers or availability were inconvenient, then consider how much schedule disruption costs you. If the dominant problem is access to a car at specific moments rather than the fare itself, a dedicated driver may be worthwhile even when the arithmetic does not show a neat cash saving.

What a Bangkok Driver Actually Costs Once Overtime and Extras Are Included

In late 2026, ordinary Bangkok driver vacancies commonly sit somewhere around THB 16,000–30,000 per month. Current listings show why a single average is misleading: some roles are advertised at THB 16,000–18,000, while a direct-hire family position posted on 1 October offers THB 18,000 base pay plus separately paid overtime. Executive, strong-English or unusually flexible roles can move above the mainstream range. These are hiring-market signals, not official rates.

Base salary buys a defined working window. The final monthly number is shaped by early starts, late returns, weekend work, waiting after normal hours and trips outside Bangkok. A low headline salary can become expensive when the schedule regularly overruns. A higher offer may be better value if it genuinely includes a wider availability window, so compare the whole arrangement rather than two salary figures.

Vehicle costs sit alongside pay. With your own car, fuel, tolls, parking, maintenance and depreciation remain household expenses. Out-of-town travel can introduce meals, accommodation and additional allowances. If the driver provides the car, or a company supplies both vehicle and driver, some of those costs may be bundled into one fee — but you are then comparing a transport service with an employee, not two versions of the same job.

Recruitment fees, legally required benefits under the applicable employment structure, replacement cover and any insurance adjustments also belong in the budget. A useful way to test affordability is to model three months: a quiet month, a month with regular overtime and a month with an out-of-town trip. That exposes the true cost far better than treating THB 22,000 as the whole answer.

Indicative Bangkok Driver Pay Bands in 2026

These are market indications drawn from active vacancies and specialist hiring sources, checked on 5 October 2026. They are not fixed rates: schedule, overtime, duties, language, location and the vehicle arrangement can materially change total pay.

Full-time family driver using the employer’s car THB/month
Low 16000Typical 22000High 30000

Indicative range from active Bangkok vacancies in late 2026; hours, overtime and added duties materially affect the total.

Executive-level or strong-English driver THB/month
Low 25000Typical 30000High 50000

The upper end reflects more demanding arrangements and should be checked against the specific role; it is not a fixed market tariff.

Part-time school-run arrangement THB/month
Low 5000Typical 9000High 15000

The lower and middle range is supported by specialist hiring data; the upper end represents a more intensive schedule. Trip count, waiting time, area and vehicle arrangement all matter.

Your Car, the Driver’s Car or a Service Vehicle: How the Risk Changes

Using the household's car is the cleanest model to understand: you pay for labour while the vehicle remains your asset and your expense. Fuel, tolls, parking, servicing, tyres and repair downtime still sit with the owner. In return, you control the vehicle's condition, child seats, documents and maintenance standard.

A driver who brings a car is closer to a transport supplier than a conventional employee. Their price cannot be compared directly with the salary of someone driving your vehicle because depreciation, servicing, insurance and downtime have to be absorbed somewhere. Ask what happens when the car breaks down: whether a substitute is provided, who pays for repairs and whether the service obligation continues.

A company supplying both vehicle and driver can remove much of the administration and may offer cover when a driver is sick or a car is unavailable. The trade-off is a higher all-in price and less control over who arrives each day. A family that values the same driver for children may dislike that; an executive who mainly values guaranteed dispatch may prefer it.

Do not assume that 'first-class insurance' answers the driver question. Thai motor policies can be written around named drivers or broader driver plans, with different deductibles and underwriting conditions. Before handing over the keys, have the insurer or broker confirm whether regular use by an employed driver is allowed and whether that person must be added to the policy. Also clarify the declared use of the vehicle: a private family car with an employed driver and a commercial car-and-driver service are not the same insurance scenario.

Match the Driver Role to the Day You Actually Have

'Personal driver' can describe very different jobs. A full-time family role is usually built around consistency: a morning start, school, household trips, waiting time and a reasonably predictable end to the day. A school-run arrangement is different because the gap between the morning and afternoon trips becomes the central issue — is the driver free in between, or still on call?

Executive driving is often less predictable. A meeting runs over, the next address changes en route, and an evening dinner appears at short notice. Flexibility becomes part of the value, but it is also where overtime disputes begin if the working window is vague. Discretion and the ability to wait without constant supervision may matter as much as route knowledge.

Some jobs combine driving with errands: collecting documents, taking an item for repair, meeting a guest or making a purchase on the way home. One household may see those tasks as obvious; another candidate may see them as a different job. The broader the role, the more clearly duties need to be defined before salary is agreed.

English ability is similar. A school family may need the driver to communicate independently with security or staff, while another household only needs basic messages and navigation. There is no reliable salary label that guarantees a particular level, so test the communication the job will actually require.

Where to Find a Driver in Bangkok Without Treating One Channel as 'Best'

Referrals from friends, schools or condominium staff are useful because they often come with context. You may learn what kind of car the person drove, whether they were punctual and why the previous job ended. That context is valuable, but it is not a substitute for checking documents and doing a test drive; a driver who suited one household may be a poor fit for your schedule or standards.

Thai job boards provide a wider pool and a useful view of current pay expectations. The cost is your time: you write the role, screen responses, call references and organise the checks yourself. Direct hiring is usually cheaper than using an intermediary, but most of the verification burden remains with the employer.

Domestic-staff platforms and recruitment agencies can reduce that workload. A good intermediary may pre-filter by area, schedule and experience, but a fee does not prove that the candidate is right. Ask what the agency actually verifies, whether replacement is included, how long any replacement window lasts and which checks remain your responsibility.

For many households, the strongest approach is to use two channels at once: referrals for background and an open search for price and choice. That reduces the risk of overpaying for the first 'trusted' recommendation or choosing a cheap applicant who has never handled the routes and responsibilities you actually need.

Screen the Driver in the Car, Not Just Across a Table

Interview confidence can hide weak driving habits. Someone may answer every question well yet brake harshly, change lanes late or become aggressive in heavy traffic. Treat documents and conversation as the entry check; make the hiring decision only after a drive that resembles the real job.

Start with the original, valid driving licence rather than a photo on a phone. Bangkok experience should mean more than recognising district names. A useful driver anticipates awkward U-turns, school access restrictions, difficult drop-off points and the moments when navigation offers a technically faster route that is poor in practice.

Previous-employer references are more informative than 'five years of experience'. Ask how long the person actually stayed, what the schedule looked like, whether they drove children or executives, how they handled waiting and why the employment ended. Discuss accidents and traffic fines directly. The absence of one certificate does not prove a spotless record; consistency and verifiability matter more.

A test drive should include the conditions you will see every day: a narrow condominium entrance, parking, a U-turn, motorcycle-heavy traffic and a real school or office approach at a meaningful time. Watch temperament as closely as technique — following distance, reaction to being cut off, phone use and whether the driver chases time. For children, older passengers or anyone prone to motion sickness, smoothness often matters more than speed.

Finally, talk through one bad scenario: a collision, a flat tyre, a sudden destination change or a passenger running late. You are looking for a calm, coherent response rather than a rehearsed 'correct' answer. Confidentiality can also be made concrete: home addresses, family schedules, conversations and documents left in the car should stay private.

Working Hours, Overtime and Employment Terms Need More Than a Verbal Deal

A driver directly employed by a household is not outside labour law simply because the work is personal or family-related. The International Labour Organization explicitly includes drivers working in or for households within Thailand's domestic-worker framework. Ministerial Regulation No. 15, effective from 30 April 2024, extended several core protections to this group, including an eight-hour workday, at least a one-hour break and pay no lower than the applicable minimum wage.

Bangkok's official minimum under Wage Committee Notification No. 14 is THB 400 per day from 1 July 2025. As of 5 October 2026, the Ministry of Labour still lists that notification as the current minimum-wage basis, although the next wage round is already under review. Market pay for a personal driver is normally higher; the statutory floor and the hiring market answer different questions.

Most disputes begin with time rather than the salary figure. 'Nine to six' becomes unclear when there is an early school run, an evening airport trip or two hours of waiting after a meeting. Written terms should separate the normal working window, days off, how overtime is approved and paid, holiday work, out-of-town travel, waiting time, vehicle duties and reimbursement of fuel, tolls and parking. The same document should cover how employment ends and how keys, documents and other property are returned.

Social security is a separate issue. A person directly hired by an individual for non-business household work should not automatically be treated as a standard company employee under the mandatory Section 33 scheme. The ILO was still noting in 2026 that domestic workers were outside mandatory social-security coverage on the same basis as ordinary employees. If a company, agency or other legal entity is the employer, the analysis may differ, so the actual employer and arrangement matter more than the job title.

This is a practical hiring guide, not individual legal advice. The correct treatment depends on who employs the driver, whose purposes the work serves and how the role is structured at the time of hiring. Any arrangement that differs from straightforward household employment should be checked against the current rules and the actual documents.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hiring a Personal Driver in Bangkok

How much does a personal driver in Bangkok cost per month?
Late-2026 vacancies commonly place ordinary Bangkok driver roles around THB 16,000–30,000 per month. Executive duties, strong English or a demanding schedule can push the number higher. Budget beyond base pay for overtime, weekends, out-of-town travel and vehicle costs.
When does a personal driver make more sense than Grab in Bangkok?
Usually when you have repeatable daily routes, school logistics, long waiting periods or several stops in one day. The benefit may be availability and schedule control rather than a lower cash cost. For occasional travel, on-demand rides are usually more rational.
Is it better to hire a driver with a car or for my own car?
Your own car gives you control over condition, insurance and equipment, but all vehicle costs stay with you. A driver-provided car shifts some of those costs into the service price, while raising questions about maintenance, replacement and insurance. Compare the all-in cost of the two models, not just the monthly pay.
What should I check before hiring a personal driver?
See the original valid licence, verify references and establish relevant Bangkok route experience. Then run a test drive with real parking, lane changes and a destination you actually use. Discuss accidents, fines, punctuality, confidentiality and what the driver would do after a collision or breakdown.
How should working hours, overtime and days off be set for a personal driver?
Put the normal hours, days off, late returns, holiday work, waiting time and out-of-town trips in writing before day one. Direct household employment is subject to specific domestic-worker protections, including working-time rules. The exact pay and employment setup should be checked against the actual employer structure and current rules.
Do I need different insurance if an employed driver uses my car?
Not necessarily, but the existing policy needs to be checked before the driver starts. Thai policies can use named-driver or broader driver arrangements, with different deductibles and conditions. Ask the insurer or broker to confirm in writing that regular use by an employed driver is permitted under your specific policy.

The costliest mistake is agreeing on a monthly number while leaving the working day undefined. I care more about what happens after an evening meeting, how waiting time is treated and whether weekend availability is part of the job. If those points are vague, even a good driver can become a source of recurring friction. I would also treat the car-insurance check as a separate pre-start item; 'first class' is not a substitute for reading the actual driver conditions.
