Cambodia long-stay is a sequence, not a single residence card

Cambodia long-stay visas and extensions

The usual route is staged: enter on an ordinary Type E, then take an extension of stay that matches your real purpose — work, retirement, job search or study. The structure is legible, but approval is not automatic, permission to work is a separate matter, and buying property does not itself create a visa.

The route
E → purpose-based extension
Enter on an ordinary Type E, then move to EB, ER, EG or ES that matches the real purpose. There is no generic no-requirements visa and no dedicated digital-nomad category in the checked set.
Right to work
A separate layer
EB is not a work permit, and owning a condo does not create immigration status. Check the right to stay, to re-enter and to work as three separate questions.

Where to start

Cambodia’s usual long-stay route is not a residence card obtained before moving. For most private applicants, the practical sequence is an ordinary Type E entry followed by an extension of stay that matches the real purpose: EB for qualifying work/business situations, ER for retirement, EG for a temporary job search, and ES for study. The structure can be straightforward, but approval is not automatic. Immigration status, re-entry rights and permission to work are separate issues. Buying a condo or other property does not itself create a visa or residence entitlement.

The category map: how to read the system

For a typical expatriate, read the system as a decision map:

• Ordinary Type E — the entry base before the standard long-stay extensions.

• EB — qualifying work/business cases and some dependant situations; it does not replace a work permit.

• ER — retirement for a genuine non-working retiree profile.

• EG — temporary job-seeker status.

• ES — study with a registered institution.

The comparison dataset also identifies T and the special A/B/C/D/K classes so they are not confused with ordinary expat routes. A workable plan checks three separate questions: may I stay, can I leave and re-enter on this document, and may I legally perform the work I intend to do?

Which visa fits you

Suggested routeCheck ordinary E-class first; assess EB against the real activity and evidence, not the label.

In the official extension set reviewed 7 Aug 2026, no separately named category automatically covers every remote-work model. Confirm immigration, work-permit and material tax treatment.

Suggested routeOrdinary E-class → ER where the retirement profile is genuinely met.

Current guidance checked 7 Aug 2026 generally points to age 55+, no Cambodian employment and evidence of retirement status/means; this is not automatic eligibility.

Suggested routeChoose status from the real purpose of stay; an active business role may make E → EB relevant.

Property ownership does not itself create a visa or residence right.

Suggested routeCheck the principal applicant’s E/EB route and a dependant route for each family member.

Current guidance recognises dependant situations linked to EB, but evidence is case-specific; a working spouse needs separate labour review.

Suggested routeOrdinary E-class → ES with genuine enrolment.

Guidance reviewed 7 Aug 2026 requires study/financial evidence; confirm duration and documents with the institution/GDI.

Suggested routeUse T for genuine short tourism; if another long-stay basis is already planned, check E before travel.

Do not assume an in-country T conversion will be automatic; confirm with GDI.

Suggested routeOrdinary E-class → EG as a temporary bridge.

Official guidance checked 7 Aug 2026 lists 1, 3 or 6 months; confirm duration and later move to EB with GDI. EG alone is not work authorisation.

Suggested routeReview E → EB, company evidence and the separate work-permit position based on the actual role.

Incorporation does not automatically create immigration rights or waive labour requirements.

Ordinary E-class and e-Visa

“E-class” and “e-Visa” are not the same thing. Type E is a visa category; e-Visa is the government’s online application channel, which currently includes Type E and Type T. The official service shows initial Type E as single-entry with a stay of up to one month and a three-month window in which to use the visa for entry. Its long-stay value is what follows: a qualifying applicant can seek EB, EG, ER or ES after arrival. Type T is for tourism and should not be treated as a cheaper long-stay equivalent. If the intended purpose is employment, retirement, study or a structured job search, check Type E before travel instead of assuming an in-country conversion from T will always be available. Cambodia e-Arrival is a separate free border process and does not replace a required visa.

EB: work and business

EB is the principal work/business extension many long-term foreign professionals use. Current official consular guidance associates it with employees, freelancers, volunteers and certain dependant situations. The checked table lists one-, three-, six- and twelve-month options; one and three months are shown as single-entry, while six and twelve months are multiple-entry.

An employee should expect employer/company evidence, and a founder or director should not assume incorporation alone is sufficient. Most importantly, EB is not the Cambodian work permit. Foreign work permits/employment cards sit under the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training, so the immigration and labour sides should be confirmed in parallel.

ER: retirement extension

ER is Cambodia’s retirement extension. Current official consular guidance describes the usual profile as generally age 55 or above, not working in Cambodia, with evidence of retirement status and adequate means; pension/social-security documents and financial statements are examples. Shorter and twelve-month options are available and the status can be renewed while eligibility continues, but that is not a lifetime guarantee. The practical retirement decision — housing, relocation and day-to-day setup — is intentionally left to the dedicated retirement page rather than duplicated here.

EG: job-seeker extension

EG is for a genuine job-search period. Current guidance lists one-, three- and six-month options. The useful way to view it is as a bridge: look for work, then move to the appropriate EB/work-permit setup once employment exists. EG is not blanket work permission and should not be treated as indefinitely repeatable. It is also not a universal “digital nomad visa”: the current official extension set reviewed for this hub does not contain a separately named category that automatically covers every overseas remote-work model. The real activity, any Cambodian entity, work-permit position and material tax issues need case-specific review.

Work and business: immigration is separate from labour

Cambodia makes more sense when immigration permission and labour permission are separated. Ordinary E plus a suitable EB extension covers the immigration side of a qualifying work/business purpose; a foreign work permit/employment card, where required, covers the labour side. Employees should ask the employer who is handling each process. MLVT’s FWCMS is the official system for foreign-worker procedures.

Founders and directors face the same split: company registration can support the facts behind an EB case but does not create permanent immigration rights or automatically waive labour requirements. Being paid from abroad also does not by itself settle the issue. Remote-work cases should be checked against actual activity, immigration status, work-permit rules and, where financially relevant, tax treatment.

Family and dependants

Family relocation is normally organised around the principal applicant, but every family member has a separate passport and immigration record. Current consular guidance recognises dependant situations linked to EB, while the exact extension and evidence should be confirmed for each spouse and child. Prepare marriage and birth certificates, the principal applicant’s status and work/business evidence, and Cambodian address details. Translation or authentication may be required depending on the document and filing practice. A dependant arrangement should not be assumed to give a spouse permission to work; that person’s labour position must be checked separately.

The reality of a long stay

Long-term residence is usually a maintenance routine, not a one-off event: track the expiry date, prepare evidence before the deadline, keep work-permit matters current where relevant and make sure the local address record is accurate. Longer multiple-entry extensions make regional travel easier, but the live document should still be checked before departure.

Common mistakes are to call the initial E entry a “one-year business visa”, assume EB includes a work permit, change from job search to employment or from retirement to work without reviewing status, file at the last minute, or treat overstay as a convenient paid extension. Overstay can bring fines and other immigration consequences, so current sanctions should be confirmed rather than copied from old forum posts. Cambodia feels accessible because the core sequence is legible — E entry, purpose-based extension, renew while eligible — not because there are no rules.

How NovAsia helps

NovAsia can coordinate the move around the immigration process: introduce a vetted local immigration specialist, align extension timing with a lease or property move, and identify address, employer or company documents that may need to be ready before filing. NovAsia is not GDI, a Cambodian mission, a law firm or the work-permit authority, and it cannot guarantee approval. The final route and document set depend on the rules in force and the applicant’s facts.

FAQ

What is the difference between ordinary E-class and Type T?
Type T is for tourism. Ordinary E-class is the entry base used before standard EB, EG, ER and ES extensions. If the real plan is work, retirement, study or job search, choose the entry category around that purpose.
How do I get to a twelve-month extension?
Start with the correct entry status, usually ordinary E-class, then qualify for the relevant extension. Twelve-month options exist for routes such as EB and ER, but they require supporting evidence and current eligibility.
Does Cambodia have a retirement visa?
Yes. Long-stay retirement is handled through ER. Current official guidance generally points to age 55+, no employment in Cambodia and evidence of retirement status/means. The broader relocation decision is covered in the dedicated retirement and relocation page.
Can I work on EB without a Cambodian work permit?
Do not assume so. EB is an immigration extension; MLVT separately administers foreign work permits/employment cards.
What is EG for?
EG is a temporary job-seeker extension. It creates time to look for employment and prepare the next route, but it is not blanket work authorisation.
Does buying property give me a Cambodia visa?
No. Property ownership does not itself create Type E, EB, ER or another residence right. Immigration status needs its own valid basis.
Can my spouse and children simply stay under my EB?
Each family member has a separate passport and status. Dependant arrangements can be linked to an EB holder, but the exact route and evidence must be confirmed per person.
Do I have to leave Cambodia every few months?
Not simply because time has passed. Longer extensions can be multiple-entry, but the actual entry notation on the current document should be checked before travel.
If all my clients are overseas, can I ignore work rules?
No such conclusion follows from foreign clients alone. The actual activity, immigration basis, possible work permit and any material tax position should be reviewed for the individual case.

Cambodia can make entry feel simple enough that people postpone thinking about the long-term status. Six months later, work, business, leases or property plans may already depend on it. A tourist, employee, business owner and retiree do not necessarily follow the same document path. 'We will extend it later' is not much of a foundation for a settled life.
