Gyms, Pools and Sports Clubs in Phnom Penh: How to Choose the Right Place

Phnom Penh has modern fitness chains, hotel pools, tennis, squash, climbing, group classes and low-cost local gyms. Choosing only by photographs or the number of machines is a mistake. A club 40 minutes from home quickly becomes an unused membership, while a beautiful pool may be built for leisure rather than regular training. Before paying long-term, buy a day pass or short package, visit at your normal time and test the route, crowding, ventilation, changing rooms, pool conditions and real schedule.

This article is general information only. It does not replace medical advice, coaching advice or safety instructions from a qualified professional. If you have heart disease, diabetes, pregnancy, recent surgery, chronic pain or medication that affects heat tolerance, discuss exercise intensity with a clinician before starting a demanding routine.

Start with the format, not the brand

The fitness market in Phnom Penh is varied. Premium clubs attached to hotels may combine gym, pool, tennis, squash, sauna, children's activities and social space. They can be good for families or people who genuinely use several facilities, but a costly membership rarely makes sense for one short strength session per week.

A fitness chain is usually better for regular cardio, weights and group classes. A small neighbourhood gym may be simpler and cheaper, but much easier to use consistently if it is close. A specialist studio is more suitable for pilates, yoga, martial arts, dance or climbing, where the programme and coach matter more than general facilities.

The decisive factor is the route. Traffic in Phnom Penh changes by time of day, rain and neighbourhood. A club can be easy in the morning and frustrating after work. Define your maximum realistic travel time before comparing facilities.

The Place Gym

The Place is one of Phnom Penh's visible fitness chains, with branches listed in BKK1, Toul Kork and AEON Mall Phnom Penh. Multiple locations are useful, but access between branches and included facilities depend on the membership type.

The chain publishes group classes including strength, cardio, Les Mills formats, pilates, cycling, Zumba and yoga. Day access, one- to twelve-month memberships, personal training and reformer pilates may be available, but a fixed current public price table is not always shown. Ask for the normal rate, not only a promotion.

Before paying, clarify:

Visit the exact branch at your future training time. A gym that is comfortable at noon may be crowded at 18:30. Equipment and changing rooms can also differ between branches of the same chain.

Phokeethra Sports Club

Phokeethra Sports Club, at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra in Tonle Bassac, is a full sports-club format: outdoor pool with children's area, four tennis courts, two squash courts, fitness centre and group classes.

This format suits a family or someone who uses several activities. For a resident of Toul Kork or Sen Sok, the commute may matter more than the facilities.

The official site had a 2025 membership table showing adult day access at USD 20 on weekdays and USD 30 on weekends and public holidays, monthly individual membership at USD 200 and annual membership at USD 1,300. Treat these as the last published orientation, not guaranteed 2026 prices. Ask for a fresh written quote including tax, service charge, family terms and included zones.

Hotel day passes

A day pass is useful for irregular training, a temporary stay or testing a pool before committing.

Shangri-La Phnom Penh published a 2026 day-access offer including gym, sauna, outdoor pool, shower, towel and water. The official page listed USD 12 for adults on weekdays and USD 15 on weekends and public holidays. Gym and sauna hours differed from pool hours, so an evening visit might not include swimming.

Hotel Cambodiana lists a fitness centre, pool, tennis, sauna, steam room and pickleball court. The public page did not show a full current outside-visitor price, so cost and access to each facility should be confirmed directly.

Day passes are good for testing. At three or four visits per week, a monthly membership may be cheaper. Compare the monthly cost for your actual number of visits, not the price of one day.

Climbing and specialist sports

Older Phnom Penh guides may mention Phnom Climb Community Gym, but its official page announced permanent closure in March 2026. A current option is Le Club, which publishes programmes for adults, teenagers and children. New climbers should ask about induction, insurance, equipment, bouldering rules and coach qualifications.

Tennis and squash are available at places such as Phokeethra Sports Club, and Hotel Cambodiana lists tennis courts and pickleball. A court on site does not mean it is free after work or included in every pass. Confirm booking, racket rental, lighting, coach fees, rain policy and changing-room access.

How to test a gym properly

A guided tour shows a club at its best. A trial visit shows whether you can actually train there.

Do your normal workout. If you train with barbells, you need racks, benches, plates and safe flooring more than rows of treadmills. If you are returning from injury, you need space, safe movement and a trainer who can adapt exercises.

During the visit, check:

Air-conditioning alone is not good ventilation. A closed, humid room with heavy smell and fogged windows may have poor airflow. A crowd is not proof of quality if it creates queues and weak cleaning.

Do not buy an annual membership after a tour. Try one workout, then a short package or one month.

Contracts, memberships and hidden costs

A fitness membership is a service contract, not just a bundle of days. Read the start date, term, branch access, renewal and termination rules.

Check:

Unlimited may mean unlimited entry to the general gym only. Classes can require booking and may penalise no-shows. A promotional rate may apply only when paying for a full year.

If a club charges your card automatically, save the cancellation process in writing. A request at reception may not stop future charges.

Personal trainers

Do not judge a trainer only by physique or social-media following. Ask about education, certification, experience with your goal and first-aid training.

Before buying a large package, do one or two sessions and observe whether the trainer:

A trainer should not diagnose medical conditions, promise to cure chronic disease through workouts or overrule a doctor's instructions. Ask what happens to prepaid sessions if the trainer leaves, you travel or you become ill.

Pools: sport, family or leisure?

A beautiful pool is not always a training pool. Hotel pools may have irregular shapes, shallow ledges, stairs, bar areas and many leisure users. That is fine for relaxing but poor for lap swimming.

Before buying access, ask:

The best test is a normal swim at your usual time.

A strong chlorine smell does not prove good water quality. Irritating odour and red eyes can be linked to chloramines formed when chlorine reacts with contamination. Practical signs of better operation include clear water, visible circulation, clean showers and a requirement to shower before entering.

Do not jump into an unfamiliar pool without checking depth. Small hotel or residential pools may be shallower than they look.

Children need supervision even during lessons. A swimming class reduces risk; it does not make a child safe without adult attention before and after class.

Heat, air and exercise safety

Outdoor training in Phnom Penh must be planned around heat, humidity and sun. The hardest time is often the middle of the day. New arrivals from cooler climates need gradual acclimatisation: normal pace may become too intense.

Warning signs during exercise include:

Stop training, move to a cooler place and begin cooling if symptoms appear. Loss of consciousness, severe confusion, chest pain, serious breathing difficulty or major injury requires urgent help.

Cambodia's medical emergency number is 119. Save the direct number of a chosen hospital and your insurance assistance line too. Language, response and arrival time may vary.

Before training at a club, ask where the first-aid kit is and who on staff is trained. Medical insurance may exclude competitions, martial arts or high-risk activities even if normal gym workouts are covered.

Children, privacy and accessibility

For children, choose the programme, not the most impressive club. Ask about age groups, coach qualifications, supervision ratios, first aid, photo/video rules, changing-room access and who hands the child back to the adult after class.

A kids' area in a club is not always a full childcare service. Confirm age limits, staffing and whether a parent may leave the premises. In pools, responsibility before and after the lesson must be clear.

For women or anyone concerned about privacy, check changing rooms, shower layout, camera use in the gym and how management handles complaints. Separate women's areas are not universal. Filming members close-up without consent is not acceptable just because the club uses social media.

For someone with limited mobility, the route matters as much as the machine: steps at the entrance, lift access, door width, handrails, accessible shower and safe drop-off.

Choosing by neighbourhood

Residents of BKK1, Tonle Bassac and central Chamkarmon have access to The Place BKK, specialist studios and hotel clubs. That is convenient for central workers and residents, but evening traffic still needs testing.

Toul Kork has The Place TK and local gyms. For a family living north of the centre, daily travel to a premium central club may not be practical.

The AEON 1 branch of The Place may suit Tonle Bassac, Diamond Island and nearby areas, but parking and movement through the mall add time. Cambodiana and central hotels suit Daun Penh and Riverside residents, especially for pools or tennis.

Le Club should be considered when climbing is the main sport. A specialist discipline can justify a longer journey more than an ordinary treadmill session.

Before choosing an apartment, map the route to sport in the morning, after work and during rain. The same address can feel very different at different times.

Practical selection process

First identify the main activity, maximum travel time and non-negotiables: pool, free weights, group classes, children's programme or multi-branch access.

Pick three places within the realistic radius. Request current prices, timetable and membership terms. Buy a day pass or short package. Visit at the normal hour, complete a real workout, shower and travel home.

Compare the monthly cost based on real use. Add transport, court rental, paid classes, towels, lockers and joining fees.

An annual membership is sensible only after a short period proves that the club fits your routine. For a family, separately test children's access, pool supervision and shared membership terms.

When not to join

Walk away or delay payment if:

A cheap membership that you do not use is more expensive than a nearby club with a higher monthly fee.

Conclusion

Phnom Penh offers everything from simple local gyms to clubs with pools, tennis, squash, sauna and children's programmes. The Place may suit regular modern gym users. Phokeethra Sports Club may suit families or people using several facilities. Hotel passes are useful for occasional visits, and Le Club is relevant for climbing and specialist children's activities.

The best club is not necessarily the most expensive or most photogenic. It is on a realistic route, not overcrowded at your training hour, has safe equipment, a clear contract and facilities you truly use.

Before long-term payment, do a real trial visit and confirm current prices and schedules directly. Old websites and round-up articles can remain online after conditions change or a venue closes.

Frequently asked

How should I choose a gym in Phnom Penh?

Start with your main training format and the maximum travel time you will realistically tolerate. Then test the gym at your normal training hour: crowding, ventilation, equipment, changing rooms, contract terms and hidden fees.

How do I know whether a pool is good for regular swimming?

Check length, lanes, depth, opening hours, children's lessons, water clarity, showers and event closures. A beautiful hotel pool is not always useful for serious lap swimming.

Should I buy an annual membership immediately?

Usually no. Buy a day pass or short package first and train at the time you will actually use the club. Annual payment makes sense only after you have tested the route, habit and contract terms.
