Khanh Binh–Chrey Thom international border crossing opens between Cambodia and Vietnam
Let’s explore this page together
The new status is now operational, not just announced
The inauguration took place at Khanh Binh on the Vietnamese side of the border. After the ribbon-cutting, the first cargo vehicles moved through the crossing and officials demonstrated procedures for goods, passengers and vehicles.
Vietnam had approved the upgrade of Khanh Binh from a main land border gate to an international one on 7 August 2026. The October ceremony therefore marked the operational opening of the Khanh Binh–Chrey Thom pair under that status rather than the start of border traffic from scratch.
The crossing already handled substantial activity before the upgrade. An Giang authorities reported more than 194,000 border movements and about US$617.42 million in import-export turnover during the first nine months of 2026.
For practical context, see Cambodia law and taxes. This development also connects with Cambodia and Croatia discuss closer mine action cooperation.
A closer land link to Phnom Penh, with practical limits
Khanh Binh in An Giang connects directly with Chrey Thom in Cambodia's Kandal Province. Vietnamese reporting places the crossing about 75 km from Phnom Penh, making it a relatively close land gateway between the capital area and this part of southern Vietnam.
An Giang has set a target of around US$1.2 billion in import-export turnover through the crossing by 2030. That figure is a provincial goal, not a guaranteed outcome from the opening itself. Actual gains for freight and business will depend on clearance times, road links and how reliably the crossing operates over time.
For travellers, international-gate status should not be read as a universal promise of frictionless passage. Passport and visa rules, customs requirements and vehicle documents can still differ by nationality and trip type, so the change is the existence of another formal route rather than the disappearance of border formalities.
