Cambodia's stock exchange sets a September trading record

Event date

September's figures tell two stories: significantly more money changed hands during a typical session, and a larger group of investors was participating. Neither figure, on its own, tells a buyer how readily a particular holding could be sold.

Trading value surpassed the April 2022 high

According to CSX, at 5.8 billion riel per trading day, September's average exceeded the previous record of 3.6 billion riel (around US$890,000) by roughly 63%. That earlier peak was set in April 2022. These are daily averages for their respective months, not total monthly transaction values.

CSX also reported an average of 12,173 orders submitted each day, covering approximately 7.5 million shares. Those figures describe orders placed on the market. They should not be confused with the number of shares that ultimately changed ownership, since an order does not necessarily result in a trade.

New accounts hit a high, then the index retreated

A record 4,162 trading accounts were opened in September, beating the 4,034-account milestone from September 2018. CSX put the number of active investors for the month at 9,806. The exchange presented the figures as evidence of growing engagement with Cambodia's securities market.

The CSX Index rose 20.26% over September and finished the month at 650.62 points. By 9 October, however, market data showed it at 602.17 points. Investors looking at the September headline now have both facts to consider: trading participation reached new heights, while prices were already moving sharply after the reporting period ended.

The next question is how the activity is distributed among listed companies. Market-wide turnover cannot tell an investor whether there will be enough buyers for a specific stock at a reasonable price. Daily trading in that security, its bid–ask spread, company disclosures and brokerage costs remain more useful guides to the feasibility of entering or exiting a position.
