Cambodia Moves NR1 and Mekong Bridge Project Forward — Still in Planning
The scheme matters most to people living, buying or holding property east of central Phnom Penh and around Areyksat because it could eventually change daily access across the Mekong. For now, however, it remains planned infrastructure rather than a transport benefit that residents can already use.
What the National Road 1 plan includes
The August review covered an upgrade of roughly 53 kilometres of National Road 1. Project materials describe widening sections from two lanes to four or six lanes, with viaducts proposed at congested urban and market locations. A new Mekong crossing is also part of the plan, intended to strengthen links between Phnom Penh, the Areyksat side of Kandal and the wider road network.
JICA’s project page frames the objective as improving and widening National Road 1 from Phnom Penh toward the southeast, adding a Mekong bridge and improving connectivity along Cambodia’s Southern Economic Corridor. The project therefore has both local commuting implications and a broader logistics role, but those objectives should not be confused with completed infrastructure.
September brought more preparation, not a construction start
The August draft-report review was followed by another round of preparatory work. On 14 September, MPWT, Ministry of Economy and Finance officials and JICA discussed a fact-finding mission, road-widening options, the bridge scope, financing considerations, environmental impact work and the resettlement action plan.
Those workstreams are important because they show what still has to be resolved before physical delivery. JICA classifies the project as Category A because of the likelihood of significant environmental and social impacts, including large-scale involuntary resettlement. As of this article’s preparation, there is no verified basis for saying construction on this NR1–Mekong bridge package has started or that every financing and implementation decision has been finalised.
What buyers in east Phnom Penh and Areyksat should take from it
If delivered broadly as planned, the road upgrade and new crossing could change travel times and route resilience between the eastern side of the Mekong and Phnom Penh’s main urban network. That is a reasonable future scenario to monitor, but it is not evidence that a particular home or land parcel will rise in value.
A buyer can make a cleaner decision by pricing the property on today’s access to existing bridges, roads, schools, workplaces and services. The planned project can sit in the upside case, while the exact alignment, construction disruption, utility relocation and land-impact risks should be checked once final project documents and schedules are available.
