National Road 8 upgrade study advances between Prek Tamak and Ponhea Krek
For residents, drivers and businesses using Cambodia’s eastern road network, the development is a sign that the proposed upgrade is receiving more detailed technical attention. It does not yet provide a date when journeys on the corridor will become faster or more predictable.
The project moved from fieldwork into engineering review
On 3 June, an MPWT team inspected the road from Prek Tamak Bridge to Ponhea Krek at the National Road 7 junction. The ministry described the visit as an initial step in the feasibility-study phase, intended to document current road conditions and support preparation of an upgrade.
The technical work became more detailed later that month. On 13 June, MPWT reported discussions on the conceptual detailed engineering design together with social and environmental impact assessment. On 8 July, ministry officials, representatives of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and the technical consultant reviewed an interim progress report and outstanding issues in the project preparation process.
MPWT’s July description placed the corridor from the Prek Tamak roundabout in Kandal province to the National Road 7 junction in Ponhea Krek, Tboung Khmum province, with a National Road 88 branch continuing towards the Cambodia–Vietnam international border. The combined configuration was described as 129 km long.
For practical context, see Cambodia market and country comparisons. This development also connects with Cambodia Advances NR1 and Mekong Bridge Planning.
A design review is not a construction start
The distinction matters because the June field visit was explicitly presented as part of feasibility work. The July update still focused on the interim report, additional inputs, technical challenges and preparation, rather than physical works along the full route.
The reviewed material does not provide a confirmed construction start or completion timetable that road users can plan around. Until a formal implementation schedule is published, the current road and its existing travel conditions remain the practical basis for journeys and logistics.
What the study could mean for the eastern corridor
If the upgrade proceeds to implementation, the government’s stated objective is to raise road-quality standards and strengthen transport connectivity towards the eastern border. That could become relevant to local travel and freight movement, but those benefits depend on the project moving beyond its current preparatory stage.
For drivers and companies, the most useful next milestone will be a formal implementation decision accompanied by a clear works schedule and traffic arrangements. Until then, the project is better treated as a developing infrastructure plan than as an immediate improvement to daily mobility.
