Phnom Penh Autonomous Port reports one-third rise in container traffic
PPAP released its unaudited May and five-month operating results on June 16. The figures describe actual activity across the port system from January through May 2026; they are not a full-year forecast or a measure of logistics costs.
Container traffic reached 276,151 TEUs
Throughput rose to 276,151 TEUs, up 34.02% from the same five months of 2025. Cargo and fuel volume reached 2,407,587 tonnes, an increase of 10.7% year on year.
The port system recorded 1,582 cargo-vessel calls, 7.04% more than a year earlier. With 200 passenger vessels also recorded, total cargo and passenger vessel calls came to 1,782.
Container volumes therefore increased much faster than the number of cargo-vessel calls. That is useful operational context, but the published totals do not by themselves show which routes, customers or cargo categories contributed most to the increase.
For practical context, see Cambodia market and country comparisons. This development also connects with Cambodia’s fuel import bill climbs 53.8% in nine months.
Higher throughput does not settle the shipper's cost equation
For importers and exporters, the five-month figures are a useful measure of how intensively the river logistics network serving Phnom Penh and the lower Mekong is being used. They can inform a wider assessment of whether inland water transport fits a company's supply chain.
They are not proof that a shipment is now cheaper or quicker. Carrier pricing, handling, storage, customs procedures and the road leg between the terminal and the final destination can all materially change the result. A business comparing river and road options still needs route-specific quotes and schedules.
The same caution applies to nearby property and neighbourhood conclusions. More port activity can affect truck movements around individual terminals, but the effect varies by location. A rise in PPAP throughput is not evidence on its own that property values or day-to-day living conditions have improved across every area connected to the port network.
