Former Pochentong airport in Phnom Penh to become a permanent public park
The announcement gives the former airport site a clearer long-term role after months of uncertainty over how the land would be used. Prime Minister Hun Manet said the property will remain state-owned rather than being sold for private development, while a working group has been tasked with preparing the public-space project.
The site is being reserved for public recreation
Plans described on 16 September include landscaping, walking and running routes, cycling and exercise facilities, and space for public events. The former passenger terminal and control tower are also expected to be preserved as part of the airport’s historic identity. The site could eventually host marathons, exhibitions and concerts. Cafés, parking and other services may be operated through private leases, but that would not change the government’s stated intention to keep ownership of the land.
For practical context, see Cambodia market and country comparisons. This development also connects with Koh Norea–Arey Ksat bridge: contract signed in Cambodia.
April was a trial opening, not the finished park
The former airport had already been opened to the public from 11 to 19 April 2026 during Khmer New Year celebrations. That nine-day trial gave visitors access to parts of the old terminal, control tower, aircraft parking areas and sections of the runway.
The September announcement is more significant because it sets out permanent public use rather than another temporary event. Gazette Khmer also reported that a working group is preparing the redevelopment and that landscaping work is part of the current effort.
**Residents still need a timetable before planning around it**
The government has outlined the intended uses, but the available reports do not set a confirmed date for the fully developed park or a final project budget. The proposed paths, event areas and commercial services therefore should not be regarded as completed facilities yet.
For people living or renting in western Phnom Penh, the immediate change is greater certainty about the site’s future purpose. That can matter when assessing the neighbourhood over the long term, but the announcement alone is not evidence of higher property values or an instant improvement in local infrastructure.
