CLICX’s first loan rush tested the limits of Thailand’s new virtual-bank model

Event date

The first loan launch produced more demand than the system expected

CLICX began operating in June 2026 as Thailand’s first branchless commercial bank and introduced its PromptChai credit product in early August. On 4 August, the bank said it was temporarily pausing new applications while it worked through a larger-than-expected queue of existing requests.

The episode was not only about system capacity. CLICX also pushed back against the idea that a fully digital loan meant automatic approval or softer underwriting. After social-media posts encouraged people to borrow without intending to repay, the bank warned that intentional default, false information and poor repayment behaviour can affect a borrower’s credit record and may carry further consequences.

That distinction matters for anyone watching Thailand’s virtual-banking rollout. A faster application channel can make financial services easier to reach, but it does not remove the lender’s obligation to assess repayment capacity or the borrower’s obligation to repay.

Applications are available again, while underwriting remains in place

As of 19 September, CLICX’s official PromptChai page again shows an active application route and a full step-by-step process for opening the credit account. The bank also states that approval and credit criteria remain subject to its own assessment.

Applicants can choose a process that does not require a payslip or bank statement, with CLICX using alternative data from partners to help assess a suitable limit. A six-month bank statement can still be uploaded as additional information. That can reduce paperwork for some borrowers, but it should not be read as guaranteed approval or as evidence that credit standards have been relaxed.

For residents using Thailand’s banking system, the useful takeaway is broader than one product. Virtual banks can distribute services quickly and may use different data to assess customers, yet access to an app is not the same as access to credit. The actual approved limit, interest rate, repayment schedule and contract terms still matter more than a sample calculation on a product page.

Foreign residents should not assume the product is open to them

CLICX’s public onboarding guidance for its Save account currently lists Thai nationality, a valid Thai national ID card and a Thai mobile number among the basic requirements. That does not establish eligibility for every CLICX product in every case, but it is a clear reason not to treat the August loan launch as an expat lending offer.

For a foreign resident, the immediate significance is therefore the development of Thailand’s digital-banking infrastructure rather than a newly confirmed source of personal credit. Any future expansion to other customer groups would need to be checked against the bank’s current official eligibility rules. Until then, a relocation, property or business budget should not rely on the assumption that CLICX financing will be available.
