Thailand adopts Travel Rule requirements for digital asset transfers
What licensed operators will have to do
The requirements are set out in an SEC notification dated 25 August 2026. They regulate licensed digital asset operators. People who hold digital assets themselves do not receive a direct ban or a new licensing obligation under this notification.
Operators will need policies and procedures for managing risks around sending and receiving digital assets. They must collect information on customers and counterparties, carry out due diligence, check the status of other digital asset service providers involved in a transfer, and verify ownership of or control over a self-hosted wallet when assets are sent to or received from such a wallet.
For transfers between operators, the originating operator must send originator and beneficiary information together with the transfer order. Operators will also have to keep information accompanying digital asset transactions for at least five years in a form that allows the regulator to retrieve or examine it promptly.

What this could mean for customers
Customers of a licensed Thai exchange or other regulated operator may face more information requests around certain transfers. The difference is likely to be most visible when money moves between an operator and a self-hosted wallet, because the operator will need to establish that the customer owns or controls that wallet.
The rule does not, by itself, prohibit self-custody or make self-hosted wallets unlawful. Its focus is on what licensed operators must know, verify, transmit and retain when they process a transfer. The exact customer-facing verification process may differ between operators as they build their systems ahead of the effective date.
The rules are not in force yet
The notification is dated 25 August 2026, and the SEC publicly announced the adopted rules on 2 September. The effective date is 27 February 2027, giving operators time to prepare their data-transfer and transaction-monitoring systems.
For anyone who regularly moves digital assets through licensed Thai platforms, the practical point is to expect more structured checks on transfer parties and self-hosted wallets once the rules apply. Until then, the notification has been adopted but is not yet a mandatory customer process.
