Thailand flood update: 3.26 million affected, with conditions moving in different directions

Event date

The headline total hides sharply different local conditions

DDPM's assessment covered 154 districts, 1,209 subdistricts and 8,790 villages. The largest practical distinction was not simply whether a province appeared on the flood list, but whether local water levels were rising, stable or falling at the time of the report.

Water was still rising in Uthai Thani, Sing Buri, Suphan Buri, Ang Thong, Ayutthaya and Pathum Thani. Ayutthaya had 53,457 affected households, while Pathum Thani had 169,724. Chachoengsao in the East was also reporting a rising trend.

Elsewhere, conditions were easing. DDPM reported falling levels in Phetchabun and Nakhon Sawan, as well as the affected areas of Buri Ram, Chaiyaphum and Surin. Bangkok was also beginning to see water recede, although standing water and Chao Phraya River conditions remained under watch.

The next rain window overlaps areas already dealing with flooding

The Thai Meteorological Department's Weather Advisory No. 7, issued on October 4, kept its warning in place for variable weather through October 7. For October 5–6, the forecast called for thunderstorms and heavy rain across the North, the Central region including Bangkok and nearby provinces, the East and the South, while the Northeast was expected to see less rain.

That forecast does not mean every flooded location will worsen. It does mean that drainage and river conditions can change again in areas where the ground is saturated or water has not fully receded. TMD warned that accumulated rainfall could trigger flash floods, overflows and landslides, especially near waterways, foothills and low-lying areas.

A district-level check is more useful than the national number

For residents, families planning a move, renters and people travelling between provinces, the October 4 total should be treated as a scale indicator, not a live map of access. A province can have both recovering districts and locations where water is still rising.

Plans involving a specific home, school, workplace or road route are therefore better based on the newest local warnings and access information. Conditions can change faster than a national summary, particularly in river basins receiving upstream water or during another round of heavy rain.
