Thailand recorded 528 foreign-business approvals in five months

Event date

Thailand's Ministry of Commerce released the five-month figures on 20 June, citing the Department of Business Development. The number of authorised foreign businesses rose 24% from 426 in the same period of 2025, while the investment value recorded in the series increased 73% from THB 88.943 billion to THB 153.558 billion.

The department also reported 3,788 Thai jobs connected with foreign investors using these approval routes, up 48% year on year. For a company assessing Thailand as an operating base, the data are useful as a measure of formal foreign-business activity, but they are not a universal entry rule for overseas founders.

The 528 cases did not all use the same legal route

Of the total, 121 businesses went through the Foreign Business Licence channel and 407 received Foreign Business Certificates. The certificate group includes businesses relying on qualifying legal routes such as investment promotion, industrial-estate legislation, or treaty and international-agreement rights.

The headline number is not a count of every foreign-owned company newly registered in Thailand. It covers permissions and certificates under the Foreign Business Act framework and related statutory routes. The path available to any particular company still depends on its activity and corporate structure.

BOI-linked projects accounted for much of the recorded value

The ministry said 254 cases, or 48% of the 528 total, were linked to Board of Investment promotion. Their recorded investment value was THB 101.658 billion. The activities cited included contract manufacturing, international business and procurement functions, data centres and software development.

By number of investors, the United States led with 87 cases, followed by China with 85, Singapore with 74, Japan with 71 and Hong Kong with 48. Investment value told a different story: Singapore-linked projects accounted for THB 36.529 billion and China-linked projects for THB 30.023 billion.

The Eastern Economic Corridor also stood out. The department counted 161 foreign investors there in January–May, associated with THB 59.939 billion, equal to 39% of the investment value in the nationwide five-month series.

Later data extended the same series through July

An August update from the Ministry of Commerce put the January–July cumulative total at 736 foreign businesses and THB 219.208 billion in investment value. That later release extends the reporting period; it does not invalidate the January–May figures used in this article.

The practical limit is straightforward: rising approval numbers show more foreign projects entering formal business channels, but they do not show that every baht in the reported investment value has already been deployed. Nor do they remove the need to determine whether a particular activity requires a licence, qualifies for a certificate, or falls under another permitted structure.
