Thailand recorded 7,115 new business registrations in May
Five-month registrations were essentially flat year on year
Thailand's Department of Business Development reported 7,115 new business registrations in May. Their combined registered capital was THB14.629 billion, down 22.87% from the same month of 2025.
Across January to May, 36,794 new businesses were registered. That was just 0.06% below the corresponding period a year earlier. Registered capital for newly established businesses reached THB95.97 billion over the five months, a 26.76% year-on-year decline.
The department highlighted internet retail, certain business-support services and restaurants among areas of interest in the May data. Registration alone, though, does not establish that a company has begun meaningful operations, hired staff or generated revenue. For someone assessing a sector or the employment market, those distinctions matter.
For practical context, see Thailand economy and finance. This development also connects with Thailand sees more new firms, but lower registered capital.
Two large dissolutions distorted the capital figure
May also saw 1,047 business dissolutions registered, 22.46% more than a year earlier. Their combined registered capital jumped to THB65.792 billion, an increase of 1,485% year on year.
That headline capital number was heavily concentrated. The department said two dissolved juristic persons accounted for THB62 billion of the total, with registered capital of THB50 billion and THB12 billion respectively. The exceptional increase therefore says much more about those two cases than about the typical business closing in May.
For the first five months of 2026, 5,264 dissolutions were registered, up 10.22% year on year. Openings and closures can help describe the business environment, but they do not by themselves measure profitability, hiring, consumer demand or the survival prospects of newly registered firms.
Later releases put May's snapshot in perspective
The following month brought 7,979 new registrations, taking the first-half total to 44,773, up 2.13% from a year earlier. By the end of August, cumulative new registrations had reached 60,198, a 1.70% year-on-year increase.
Those later figures show why the near-flat January–May comparison is not a full-year trend. The broader picture through August was one of modest growth in the number of newly registered businesses, while registered capital and dissolution statistics continued to require closer reading rather than a single headline interpretation.
