Tha Kraeng flood diversion project in Phuket Town passes 70%

Event date

A new pipe will divert water toward Suan Luang

Phuket City Mayor Suppachoke La-ongphet inspected the site on September 22 at Tha Kraeng Canal inside Chalerm Prakiat Rama IX Public Park, commonly known as Suan Luang. City officials said the project had passed the 70% completion mark.

The scheme includes a 1.2-metre-diameter pipe connecting Tha Kraeng Canal with the Suan Luang reservoir. During periods of heavy rain and high sea levels, water is intended to be diverted into the park's retention area, reducing the volume moving through the canal and nearby communities.

The project is valued at about THB 7.8 million. Construction began on August 5, 2026, and the current target date for completion is January 1, 2027.

The drainage problem has not disappeared yet

Tha Kraeng Intersection has experienced repeated flooding and slow drainage, including periods when intense rainfall coincides with high sea levels. The municipality says the new connection is meant to relieve pressure on this part of the system and improve drainage around Sakdidet Road and nearby communities.

For residents, property buyers and local businesses, the project is a meaningful infrastructure upgrade, but it does not prove that every nearby property will be protected from flooding. Exposure still varies by street level, plot elevation, local drains and proximity to canals. The new system also remains unfinished, so its performance during severe weather has not yet been demonstrated after completion.

Construction continues inside Suan Luang Park

The municipality has warned of disruption around the work area, particularly near the dinosaur pond at the front of Suan Luang Park. People not involved in the project have been asked to stay out of the construction zone for safety reasons.

If the announced timetable is maintained, the works should be completed at the start of January 2027. Until then, the project should be viewed as an ongoing flood-mitigation measure rather than a completed layer of protection.
