Thailand sets out a five-year direction for elderly care

Event date

Home support and a trained care workforce

The Nation reports that deputy permanent secretary Dr Ekachai Piensriwatchara of the Health Ministry highlighted coordinated primary and social care, home support, workforce training and early screening for falls and dementia risks.

A community care programme began in 2016

Thailand’s earlier provision needs to remain part of the picture. A National Health Security Office (NHSO) publication from 2020 dates the launch of a programme for dependent older people to 2016. It describes local authorities, clinical teams, care managers and caregivers working together. That history rules out presenting long-term care as an entirely new service in the country. The publication is historical background and cannot establish a foreign resident’s current entitlement.

Planning the hours between medical appointments

WHO’s definition of long-term care includes personal, social and medical support for people who struggle to manage everyday life independently. It can take place at home, in the community or in residential settings. For a relocating household, proximity to a hospital therefore answers only part of the care question. Someone may also need dependable assistance throughout an ordinary day.

New free-care eligibility for foreigners is not specified in the report. A family’s budget needs an offer from an actual provider: whether it can meet the person’s needs, whether their status affects access, the hours covered and the full cost. Any expected insurance reimbursement should be confirmed with the insurer for the particular service and policy.
