Wise is changing how Thailand-based personal accounts work
The shift follows Wise's March 2026 announcement that it had secured the licences needed to operate locally in Thailand. For residents who use Wise both for everyday spending and for moving money across borders, the practical result is mixed: more local functionality inside Thailand, but potentially more friction on certain foreign-currency routes.
This is not one uniform switch for every Thailand-based customer. Wise's current help guidance separates users by when they opened their account, which matters when deciding whether the new restrictions should already apply.
Two customer groups are on different timelines
Wise says customers who signed up in Thailand after 21 January 2026 were being migrated progressively, with the new features and account changes due to take effect by August 2026.
Customers who joined before 21 January are on a later timetable. Wise's current guidance says the relevant changes are due to take effect from October 2026, while additional verification documents were to be requested in September. The company specifically says non-immigrant visas including DTV and ED can be accepted for that verification process.
That distinction matters in September. Two people living in Thailand with apparently similar Wise accounts may still see different functionality or limits depending on their account cohort and the stage of their migration. Account-specific notices therefore matter more than assuming the same rule applies to every Thai-address customer at once.
PromptPay makes Wise more useful for everyday payments
The local setup adds several features that are directly relevant to daily life in Thailand. Wise says personal customers will be able to fund their account from a Thai bank account, send THB overseas, scan PromptPay QR / ThaiQR codes, and make transfers to PromptPay IDs.
Receiving through PromptPay is also part of the rollout, with Wise stating a maximum of THB 10,000 per transaction for the relevant receive function. The service is also bringing physical card delivery in Thailand and digital cards to eligible customers.
For expats and long-stay residents, PromptPay is the most practical addition because it is widely used for person-to-person payments and at smaller merchants. It can reduce the need to switch between Wise and a separate Thai banking app for some transactions, although Wise's own account and payment limits still apply.
Some cross-border routes now involve more conversion
The trade-off appears on international flows. Wise says transfers between two non-Thai bank accounts can involve two currency conversions under the Thailand setup, with THB used as an intermediate currency. A USD-to-SGD transfer, for example, can become USD-to-THB-to-SGD, which may increase the overall fee.
A similar treatment can apply when sending a non-THB currency from the Wise multi-currency account. Third-party incoming payments in foreign currencies may also be converted automatically into THB. Wise distinguishes this from adding your own funds from your own foreign bank account to a matching currency balance, which can still be done without automatic conversion into baht.
Wise currently states a THB 800,000 daily limit for outward remittances from baht into foreign currencies. Separate limits apply to payments and transfers from balances held in the multi-currency account, as well as to THB conversions and certain THB transactions. Those details are particularly relevant for people using Wise for larger property-related payments, business-like personal cash flows, or regular transfers between several countries.
