Thailand widens cross-border QR payments for visitors from nine Asian markets
On 8 July 2026, Thailand’s Government Public Relations Department highlighted the expansion of the Pay Like a Local initiative, which promotes cross-border QR payments for international visitors. Instead of relying only on cash or a Thai-issued card, eligible travellers can pay through supported mobile banking apps or e-wallets from their home market at participating businesses.
The scheme is aimed at routine spending at shops, restaurants, attractions and other tourism-related venues. For someone staying in Thailand for several weeks or months, that can remove some friction while local banking arrangements are still being sorted out — or when opening a Thai account is unnecessary for the stay.
Nine home markets are in scope, but app support is not universal
The official list covers mainland China, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, South Korea, Laos, Cambodia and Hong Kong. That list describes the markets connected to the initiative; it does not mean every bank or wallet from those places can scan every Thai QR code.
The Bank of Thailand’s current cross-border payment information illustrates how the links differ. Chinese visitors may use services including UnionPay, Alipay and WeChat Pay, while the Korean connection includes Paybooc. For Malaysia, the central bank gives Public Bank as one example of an app that can scan supported Thai merchant QR codes. These are corridor-specific arrangements rather than one universal foreign-wallet standard.
On the Thai side, TAT identified eight participating banks in the broader merchant-readiness effort: Krungthai Bank, Bangkok Bank, Kasikornbank, Siam Commercial Bank, Bank of Ayudhya, ICBC Thai, Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives, and CIMB Thai Bank. Payment and switching partners named in the same initiative include National ITMX, Alipay, WeChat Pay and UnionPay.

Merchant participation is the second half of the payment
A QR sign at the counter is not enough on its own. The official material repeatedly limits the service to participating merchants, which means acceptance can still vary from one business to the next even when a traveller has a supported app.
That is also why the tourism authorities and the Bank of Thailand have been running merchant activation campaigns. Expanding the network requires shops and service businesses to adopt the relevant QR acceptance setup; traveller-side compatibility alone does not create nationwide coverage overnight.
For everyday use, it makes sense to check whether the payment option appears in the app before relying on it for a larger purchase. A physical card or some cash remains a sensible backup, particularly with smaller merchants or in places where cross-border acceptance is less established.
Useful for longer stays, but not a substitute for a Thai bank account
Cross-border QR can make day-to-day spending easier for eligible long-stay visitors because it lets them keep using a familiar financial app. It can be especially convenient during the period before a local account is opened, or for people who do not need one at all.
The service does not provide the full functions of Thai mobile banking. Person-to-person transfers, bill payments, limits and other account features still depend on the specific bank or wallet and may not match what a local PromptPay user can do.
The practical change is therefore wider payment choice, not universal access to Thailand’s domestic banking system. Visitors planning a longer stay should check their exact app and keep another payment method available instead of assuming that any foreign QR wallet will work everywhere.
