How Much Does International School Cost in Thailand?

What a Realistic Annual International-School Budget Looks Like in Thailand

Thailand does not have a useful single “average international-school fee.” Even a small set of official 2026/27 schedules spans a very wide range. HeadStart Phuket lists annual tuition of roughly THB 347,000–540,000 by year group. Regents International School Pattaya runs from THB 440,800 to THB 854,050 under its published full-year payment schedule. Bangkok Patana ranges from THB 515,000 to THB 1,014,000, while International School Bangkok lists THB 659,000 for Pre-K and THB 1,197,000 for High School.

Those figures are school-specific reference points, not city averages. The year group can change the bill dramatically within the same campus. At ISB, the move from Pre-K to Elementary takes tuition from THB 659,000 to THB 1,015,000 before transport and first-year charges are considered. Bangkok Patana's schedule also varies by year, but it is not a simple upward staircase: some examination-year fees are structured differently, so a child's age cannot be converted into one universal percentage increase.

Tuition is only the first layer of the budget. ISB lists a separate THB 22,000 annual fee for most K–12 students, as well as distance-based school transport. Bangkok Patana charges a THB 30,000 annual capital assessment and may bill additional English-language support where the school determines it is required. Regents has separate experiential-curriculum charges for certain year groups and external examination fees in the upper school.

A more useful family model therefore has three buckets. Start with tuition for the exact year group. Add recurring costs that apply to that child, such as transport, meals where they are not included, compulsory support, examinations or programme-specific travel. Then add the one-off entry costs that occur only when the child joins. That split makes the relocation-year cash requirement visible without pretending that every future year will cost the same.

All figures on this page are reference points from published 2026/27 schedules at named schools. Families should confirm the current invoice, refund terms and the exact inclusions for the relevant campus and year group before paying, because fee schedules can change.

2026/27 School-Fee Reference Bands

These are reference points from published schedules at selected schools in Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya, not nationwide averages. They show the scale of the budget; the decision still depends on the exact school and year group.

Annual tuition: early years THB
Low 347000Typical 515000High 659000

The low point is HeadStart, the middle reference is Bangkok Patana Nursery, and the high point is ISB Pre-K. Compare like-for-like ages.

Annual tuition: primary school THB
Low 480000Typical 790000High 1015000

Reference points from HeadStart, Bangkok Patana and ISB. Fees can still vary by year group within Primary or Elementary.

Annual tuition: secondary school THB
Low 540000Typical 854050High 1197000

Reference points from HeadStart, Regents Pattaya and ISB. Some examination-year costs may be billed separately.

Major one-time entry charge THB
Low 60000Typical 107000High 260000

THB 60,000–107,000 reflects Regents enrolment charges by age; THB 260,000 is ISB's registration fee. Other schools use different structures and labels.

Additional English-language support THB
Low 60000Typical 105000High 214000

HeadStart lists THB 60,000 a year, Bangkok Patana THB 105,000, while some Regents English-support programmes reach THB 214,000. These charges apply only where support is required.

Why the First School Year Usually Costs More

The gap between “tuition is THB 800,000” and the cash a family needs before the first school day can run into hundreds of thousands of baht. The reason is the fee structure. Schools separate application charges, entry or registration fees, deposits, annual charges and tuition, and those items do not all behave the same way when a student leaves.

Application charges are usually the smallest first-year item. For 2026/27, ISB lists THB 4,700. Bangkok Patana charges THB 5,500 for applications from 1 August 2026, Regents Pattaya THB 7,500 and HeadStart THB 8,000. These are non-refundable processing charges under the published terms and paying one does not secure a place.

The larger jump comes once a place is offered. ISB has a THB 260,000 registration fee for new Kindergarten–Grade 12 students. Bangkok Patana charges a THB 250,000 entrance fee for the first child and THB 200,000 for the second and subsequent children. Regents lists an enrolment fee of THB 60,000 for the early years and THB 107,000 for Years 1–13. HeadStart's published schedule has a THB 100,000 entrance fee plus a separate THB 75,000 endowment fee.

Those labels matter because the refund rules differ. Bangkok Patana's THB 50,000 deposit is refundable on withdrawal if the required notice is given and outstanding charges are cleared. HeadStart's terms describe the endowment fee as refundable subject to its withdrawal conditions, while the entrance fee is non-refundable. ISB's registration fee is generally non-refundable, with a limited published exception for a new student withdrawing within the first 20 days.

For relocation planning, the cleanest approach is to follow the cash. Work out what must be paid before attendance starts, which amounts may eventually come back, and which charges will reappear in year two. That prevents a refundable deposit and a non-refundable entry fee from being treated as though they were the same cost.

What Drives the Price More: Year Group, School or City?

The sample can tempt families into a quick conclusion: the highest published figures are in Bangkok, therefore Bangkok is always more expensive. The 2026/27 schedules do not support that rule. They show that the individual school and the child's year group can move the budget more than the city label alone.

ISB is a clear example. Pre-K tuition is THB 659,000, Elementary THB 1,015,000, Middle School THB 1,137,000 and High School THB 1,197,000. Regents in Pattaya starts at THB 440,800 in Pre-Nursery and reaches THB 854,050 in the upper years under its full-year payment terms. HeadStart's 2026/27 schedule in Phuket runs from THB 347,000 to THB 540,000. That is already a large spread before buses, support programmes or exam charges enter the picture.

Location still affects the family budget, just not as a neat city premium. A lower-fee school can become more expensive to operate around if the family lives far enough away to need daily transport. A higher-fee campus close to home may remove a six-figure bus bill and reduce a child's commuting time. For two children, housing location and school location start to interact with the education budget in a very practical way.

A Bangkok-versus-Phuket-versus-Pattaya comparison is therefore only meaningful after the family has shortlisted actual schools and matched the same age or year group. City school guides can handle the local choice in depth; the cost exercise here is to compare like with like before attributing the difference to geography.

Costs That May Sit Outside Headline Tuition

Two schools with similar tuition can produce very different all-in bills because they package services differently. One may include lunch and compulsory residential trips; another may bill them separately. A laptop may be a family purchase at one school while more technology is supplied at another. The headline fee therefore tells only part of the story.

Transport is one of the largest add-ons. ISB's 2026/27 two-way bus costs THB 111,300 a year for a home 1–5 km from school and rises to THB 178,000 at 46–55 km. Bangkok Patana publishes its own zones, with annual round-trip routes from THB 80,100 to THB 120,800 before considering separate shuttle options. Regents also uses zones; its published 2026/27 annual two-way prices run from about THB 60,000 to THB 168,000. That makes the home-to-school distance a genuine budget variable, not just a lifestyle preference.

Meals are another example of incompatible fee structures. Bangkok Patana includes lunch for Primary students, while Years 7–13 can use a separately priced meal plan. HeadStart states that lunches and snacks are included in school fees alongside core learning materials and a range of trips and activities. Regents lists a separate meal plan for Early Primary and Primary, while Secondary students use a pay-as-you-go food-court model. A family cannot assume that “lunch included” at one school tells them anything about another.

Older students can pick up costs that do not exist in the early years. Regents bills iGCSE, A Level and IBDP examination fees separately at THB 35,000–65,000 depending on subjects. Bangkok Patana requires students in Years 6–13 to bring their own laptop and notes separate external-examination charges in some upper years. HeadStart includes a broad set of learning materials and activities but still identifies uniforms, transport, certain programmes and examinations as separate charges.

Additional language or learning support can be material too. HeadStart lists THB 60,000 a year for English-language support in its 2026/27 schedule. Bangkok Patana lists THB 105,000 for Years 1–9 where the school requires the programme. Regents publishes English-acquisition programmes ranging from THB 131,000 to THB 214,000 a year by support level. These are not automatic fees for every international student; they depend on the school's assessment of the child.

The most useful admissions question is therefore not “Are there any extras?” but “What is included for this specific year group, and what could be invoiced separately during the year?” That wording exposes the difference between a headline tuition number and the family's operating budget.

How to Model the Budget for One Child or Two

For one child, keep two columns side by side. The relocation year includes tuition, every one-off entry charge, any refundable deposit, transport and the child's compulsory add-ons. The normal later year drops the joining fees but retains tuition, annual charges, transport, meals and any support that still applies.

Bangkok Patana gives a useful concrete example. A new Year 3 student in 2026/27 has THB 790,000 in tuition. Before optional services, the first-year cash flow also includes a THB 5,500 application fee, THB 250,000 entrance fee for the first child, THB 50,000 deposit and THB 30,000 annual capital assessment. That brings cash due to THB 1,125,500 before transport, uniform or additional support; THB 50,000 of that is a deposit subject to refund conditions, so it should not be interpreted as the same kind of cost as the entrance fee.

With two children, multiplying a single-child budget by two can be misleading. Bangkok Patana reduces the entrance fee to THB 200,000 for the second and subsequent children, but tuition still has to be modelled separately by year group, as do buses and support. Other schools use different sibling policies: HeadStart currently publishes a 10% tuition discount for the second child, whereas Regents' tuition discount starts with the third child. A sibling discount should only enter the spreadsheet after the school has confirmed that the family actually qualifies.

This split can also change a housing decision. If two school-bus subscriptions add THB 200,000–300,000 a year to the family budget, paying more rent closer to campus becomes a financial comparison as well as a convenience choice. The useful output is not one “school cost” number but a relocation-year cash requirement and a repeatable annual budget once the family is settled.

Frequently Asked Questions About International-School Costs in Thailand

How much does an international school in Thailand cost per year?
There is no single reliable nationwide average. In the official 2026/27 schedules used here, tuition runs from about THB 347,000 at HeadStart to THB 1,197,000 at ISB. That is a range across named schools, not a market statistic. A family should start with the exact year-group fee and then add the recurring costs that apply to the child.
How much extra do you pay in the first year beyond tuition?
The amount is school-specific, but the one-off charges can be substantial. ISB lists a THB 260,000 registration fee; Bangkok Patana charges a THB 250,000 entrance fee for the first child plus a THB 50,000 deposit; Regents charges THB 60,000 or THB 107,000 depending on age. Application processing is normally a separate item. Refundable and non-refundable payments should be modelled separately.
What is often not included in international-school tuition?
Transport, uniforms, devices, some trips, external examinations and additional learning support are common separate charges. But “commonly” should not be mistaken for a rule: HeadStart includes meals and many learning materials, Bangkok Patana includes Primary lunches and certain compulsory residential visits, and Regents uses its own add-on structure. The only safe comparison is the inclusion list for the child's actual year group.
How much does school transport cost in Thailand?
There is no nationwide school-bus price because schools use their own zones and routes. ISB's 2026/27 two-way service runs from THB 111,300 to THB 178,000 a year depending on distance. Bangkok Patana and Regents use different zone structures, so the same home address needs a separate quote from each school. For a two-child family, transport can become one of the largest costs after tuition.
Are international schools in Bangkok more expensive than in Phuket or Pattaya?
The highest figures in this sample are in Bangkok, but that does not establish a rule for every school in each city. The individual school and year group move the price substantially, while transport and inclusions affect the all-in family budget. A city comparison is meaningful only after matching real schools for the same age group. Otherwise, school positioning and programme differences get mistaken for a geographic premium.
Do schools offer sibling discounts for two children?
Policies differ materially. Bangkok Patana reduces the entrance fee from THB 250,000 to THB 200,000 for the second and subsequent children, while its tuition discount starts with the third child. HeadStart publishes a 10% tuition discount for the second child, whereas Regents also starts its tuition discount with the third. Families should obtain the current written sibling terms before building the discount into their budget.
What is the right way to compare two schools on cost?
Start with the same year group and the same academic year at both schools. Then separate first-year cash outlay, the recurring later-year budget and genuinely optional family choices. A refundable deposit should not be treated as the same type of cost as a non-refundable entrance fee. Where inclusions differ, add the missing services so the comparison is genuinely like for like.

Key Budget Lessons for International-School Families

  • Headline tuition does not show the family's full first-year cash requirement.
  • Year group and the individual school can matter more than the city label.
  • One-off entry charges should be separated from refundable deposits and recurring fees.
  • Transport, exams and additional support can add tens or hundreds of thousands of baht a year.
  • A fair comparison uses the same year group, academic year and service assumptions.

The first number a family sees is often the least useful one because it is usually tuition, not the cash needed to start. I prefer to put the joining year beside a normal later year and see which charges disappear and which keep coming back. That simple split exposes whether a seemingly cheaper school is relying on separate transport, support or exam charges. It also stops a refundable deposit from being treated as though it were just another non-refundable fee.
