International Schools in Bangkok: Choosing by Curriculum and Commute
Quick — 10-second read
- In short
- Start with the child’s academic pathway and a place that is genuinely available in the right year group. Then price the full first year and test the school-day commute; only after that should a long-term housing choice become fixed.
- Who it matters to
- This approach suits relocating families, as well as families already in Bangkok who are changing schools and neighbourhoods at the same time.
- Next step
- Narrow the list by age and curriculum, speak to admissions about availability and support, then run the morning and afternoon routes before paying a housing deposit.
This is a guide, not legal, tax or investment advice.
Where to Start When Choosing an International School in Bangkok
School choice becomes much easier once the family stops treating the school name as the starting point. The useful starting point is the student: current grade, present curriculum, language of instruction, likely length of stay in Thailand and what comes after Bangkok. A seven-year-old can often absorb a curriculum change more easily than a teenager who has already begun an exam sequence or is building a transcript for university applications.
That makes the time horizon important. A family expecting another international move in two or three years may value continuity with the next system more than a spectacular campus. A family staying through graduation needs to look further ahead: subject choice, senior-school pathway and the qualifications that will actually appear on the student’s record. “International” describes the school category, not a single academic route.
An initial list of six to ten schools is usually manageable. Age and curriculum can reduce it quickly; location should then remove options that would make daily life unrealistic. The remaining three or four are worth taking to admissions with specific questions about the intended start date, the correct Year or Grade, current availability, assessment and any language or learning support the child may need. A school that looks ideal online is not yet a real option until those points are workable for that student.
Campus visits come later in the process, when the family knows what it is trying to confirm. At that point the visit is less about being impressed and more about testing fit: the next stages of the curriculum, how support is delivered, what a normal school day looks like and how the child would get there. Housing should follow that information, not precede it.
British, American or IB: What Actually Changes for the Student
British, American and IB schools can all be academically demanding, but they organise the student’s path very differently. The practical question is continuity: how much of the child’s existing work carries across, what the next two or three years will look like, and which qualification or transcript the student will eventually present. Those differences are modest in the early years and become much more consequential once subject choices and exam cycles begin.
A British school commonly follows an English-style year structure and may move into IGCSE and then A levels in the senior years. The wording “British curriculum” is not enough on its own; families still need the actual subject offer and entry point. Mid-cycle transfers can be difficult. Shrewsbury Bangkok, for example, says that entry from Year 10 upwards part-way through IGCSE or A-level programmes can only be accommodated in exceptional circumstances.
US-style schools usually build graduation around credits and a High School Diploma. Advanced Placement courses may sit alongside that diploma, and some schools add IB options. International School Bangkok is a useful example: its high-school pathways include an American diploma, AP, the IB Diploma and blended routes. A transfer student therefore needs to know which prior credits will be accepted, which courses are needed for graduation and whether the subjects required for university remain available.
IB works differently again. PYP, MYP and DP are distinct programmes, not a blanket label that automatically applies to every age group in an “IB school”. NIST publishes a full PYP–MYP–DP continuum, while other schools may offer only selected stages. For a mobile family already in IB, that continuity can reduce disruption, but authorisation does not tell you whether the school has a seat, the right support capacity or the DP subjects a particular student needs.
Bangkok also has national and blended schools built around French, German, Japanese, Singaporean and other systems. For some families, especially those with a known next destination, that route can be more coherent than switching into a globally marketed curriculum. Accreditation should be checked separately from membership in a school association; ISAT itself states that it is not an accrediting agency.
University planning is the point where simple labels stop being useful. Institutions set their own entry rules and may require specific A-level subjects, AP courses, IB results or other evidence. The sensible curriculum is the one that preserves the student’s realistic next step, not the one that wins a generic league table.
How the Main Academic Pathways Differ
This is not a ranking. It highlights where transitions may be smoother and what still needs to be verified with the school.
British

- British-style year groups and subject structure.
- Upper school
- Often IGCSE, then A levels; offerings vary.
- Easier transition for
- Students already in a British system.
- What to verify
- Year placement, subjects and exam-cycle entry.
American
- How it works
- Credit-based required and elective courses.
- Upper school
- High School Diploma, sometimes with AP and IB.
- Easier transition for
- Students transferring from credit-based systems.
- What to verify
- Credit transfer and graduation requirements.
IB
- How it works
- PYP, MYP and DP are authorised separately.
- Upper school
- DP or selected IB courses, depending on the school.

- Families already following an IB pathway.
- What to verify
- Authorised stages and required DP subjects.
Other national / blended
- How it works
- A national curriculum or a blend of systems.
- Upper school
- Depends on the national system and school.
- Easier transition for
- Families with a likely next education system.

- Accreditation, final qualification and transfer rules.
Admissions: Seat Availability Matters More Than a Perfect Shortlist
A school is not a viable choice merely because the curriculum fits. It also needs a place in the correct year group, an admissions route the student can realistically complete and enough support capacity for that child. Those rules are set by individual schools, so families should expect variation in age placement, testing, reports, English-language expectations and learning-support review.
Bangkok Patana is a clear example of why age placement matters. Its published policy uses British-system age norms, with a 1 September to 31 August cut-off, and says placements outside those ranges are exceptional. Admissions decisions may draw on school reports, references, writing samples, assessments and the school’s ability to meet social, emotional and learning needs. A child’s previous grade label therefore does not automatically transfer unchanged.
Shrewsbury Bangkok puts a different constraint in view: timing. The school advises families to check availability before applying and, where possible, to apply around 12 months before the intended start. Assessment becomes more academic with age and can include English, mathematics, cognitive testing and interviews; older A-level applicants may face subject-specific tests. Entry from Year 10 upwards during an IGCSE or A-level cycle is described as exceptional.
Paperwork is school-specific too. Previous reports, identity documents, birth records and learning-support plans are common, but the exact package and translation rules vary. The same applies to language or additional learning support: a department may exist without having unlimited capacity in every year group.
The useful outcome of an admissions conversation is a concrete one: the year group under consideration, current availability or wait-list status, the assessments required and whether the school can support the student as presented. Until that is clear, the family has a shortlist, not a school place.
Bangkok School Commutes: Measure Minutes, Not Kilometres
Bangkok makes distance a poor shortcut for commute quality. A short route across a congested junction can take longer than a much longer trip that uses an expressway, and the afternoon journey may bear little resemblance to the morning one. The useful unit is door-to-door time during actual school-run hours.
The school locations themselves create very different housing maps. NIST sits on Sukhumvit Soi 15 in Asok, with access to Asok BTS and Sukhumvit MRT; the school also describes a free shuttle from that transport hub and a contracted bus service. Bangkok Patana is on LaSalle Road in Bang Na and operates its own school transport, with a shuttle link from Bang Na BTS for older students. Neither model is inherently better; they simply produce different daily routines.
Shrewsbury adds another complication because the campus matters. Riverside is on Charoen Krung Road, while City Campus is near Rama 9, and senior-school students are based at Riverside. A primary-age child may therefore have a different location decision from the one the family will face later. International School Bangkok is in Nichada Thani, Pakkret, Nonthaburi. It belongs to the Greater Bangkok metropolitan area, but it is not a central-Bangkok campus, so a parent working in Sukhumvit or Sathorn has to model the child’s and the adult’s commutes together.
A proper route test needs at least two clocks: morning arrival and normal dismissal. Activities create a third. Rain, sibling drop-offs, a missed school bus or a later sports session can change the calculation again. Families with two children often discover that the hardest part is not the nominal distance to school but synchronising two different end-of-day schedules.
The housing decision is much safer once the route has been driven or ridden at the right times from the neighbourhoods actually under consideration. A map can tell you kilometres. It cannot tell you whether that commute will still feel acceptable on the 150th school morning.
Which School-Choice Scenario Fits Your Family
A nearby condo is convenient, but the academic path into and out of Bangkok should be clear first.
A mid-cycle move can rule out schools even when the budget works.
The key is what the school will accept from prior study and what must still be completed.
A school bus may solve one leg without solving late activities or the parents’ timetable.
Having a support department does not guarantee capacity for that student at that start date.
School Bus, BTS/MRT or Car: What to Check Before Enrolling
A school bus is useful only when it works for the family’s actual address and timetable. The relevant questions are route coverage, the real pickup point, how many stops come before school, whether younger students are supervised and what happens after activities. A service that works perfectly at normal dismissal may not solve a 5:30 pm sports finish.
NIST describes two layers of transport: a free shuttle linking campus with Asok BTS/Sukhumvit MRT and a contracted residence-to-school bus service. ISB publishes a distance-based schedule for 2026/27; its two-way air-conditioned service is adult-monitored and costs THB 111,300 per year for homes 1–5 km from school, rising to THB 178,000 for the 46–55 km band. That is a meaningful budget line, not a small add-on to tuition.
Bangkok Patana uses transport zones. Its 2026/27 schedule ranges from THB 47,000 per year for one-way Zone 1A service to THB 120,800 for Zone 2 round trips, with a separate BTS shuttle priced at THB 9,000 one way or THB 18,000 round trip for the year. Published fees are a starting point; the address still needs to be accepted on the route and the school can revise transport charges under its stated terms.
Rail plus shuttle can work well for older students, while younger children may need continuous adult supervision. Driving gives parents flexibility but exposes the family to peak traffic and campus drop-off queues. The best transport mode is the one that still works on activity days, rainy days and the weeks when both parents’ calendars are busy.
International School Budget: Tuition Is Only One Line
The first-year bill can be much larger than the tuition figure shown in a comparison article. Application, registration or entrance charges, a refundable deposit, annual fees, transport, meals, uniforms, devices, examinations, trips and paid activities may sit outside tuition. Schools package those costs differently, so a tuition-only comparison can make two very different budgets look similar.
ISB’s 2026/27 schedule illustrates the layering clearly. The school lists a THB 4,700 application-processing fee, a THB 260,000 one-time registration fee and a THB 22,000 annual fee. Tuition runs from THB 659,000 in Pre-Kindergarten to THB 1,197,000 in Grades 9–12, while the optional two-way school bus adds THB 111,300–178,000 a year depending on distance. The family’s real number therefore depends on grade and services, not on a single headline fee.
Bangkok Patana packages the first year differently. From 1 August 2026, the application fee is THB 5,500; the entrance fee is THB 250,000 for the first child and THB 200,000 for subsequent children, with a THB 50,000 deposit. Published 2026/27 tuition ranges from THB 515,000 in Nursery to THB 1,014,000 in Year 12, and the school also lists a THB 30,000 capital assessment fee. Primary lunch is included, while some other items and optional activities are charged separately.
Those examples are useful because they show structure, not because they create a price ranking. A large entrance fee changes the first year but not every later year. A deposit should be read together with the withdrawal and refund terms. Transport can add six figures in baht even when tuition is already substantial.
All figures above were checked against school-published 2026/27 schedules on 19 September 2026. They should still be reconfirmed before payment because fee schedules, transport costs and billing terms can change. A housing budget is much safer once the family knows the complete school cash requirement, not just tuition.
What to Verify on a School Visit Before Choosing a Neighbourhood
A campus visit should close gaps that the website cannot. By then, the family should know the likely year group and arrive ready to discuss the next two or three years: actual availability, senior-school subjects, curriculum continuity and any language or learning support the student may require. Facilities matter, but those answers will shape the child’s week more directly.
The daily timetable deserves equal attention. Start and finish times, activity schedules, late buses and school-calendar differences can change which neighbourhoods remain realistic. A normal 3 pm bus is of little use to a student who stays for sport several evenings a week, and siblings can create two transport problems rather than one.
Money needs a final pass before deposits are paid. Application or entrance charges may be non-refundable, while deposits and withdrawal charges depend on notice periods and the school’s current terms. A family planning a future intake should not assume that the present academic-year schedule will carry forward unchanged.
Then test the trip from the housing areas you are genuinely considering. Run the morning journey at school time, the return at normal dismissal and, where relevant, a later activity-day return. That exercise often removes neighbourhoods that looked perfectly reasonable on a map.
When school access is the main constraint on a move, the order is worth protecting: a workable school place first, a tested commute second, a long lease third. It does not eliminate every relocation surprise, but it prevents the home from locking the family into an avoidable daily problem.

Expert view

A school can be excellent and still be wrong for a family if the academic transition is awkward or the child spends too much of the day commuting. I'd narrow the field to schools that genuinely fit the student’s age, pathway and admissions reality. After that, the route deserves a test on a normal school day, including the trip home. Housing becomes much easier to choose once those two constraints are real rather than theoretical.
