Bali's electric vehicle count reaches 17,725 as charging network expands
In brief: PLN says Bali had 17,725 electric cars and motorcycles in operation by October 2026. Its reported public charging network comprised about 304 units across 115 locations, figures that reveal little about access in any particular neighbourhood.
The figures came from Ajrun Karim, head of PLN's Bali distribution unit, in reporting published by Bali Post on 7 October and ANTARA on 8 October 2026. They cover the province as a whole, rather than a map of usable charging options for individual drivers.
Electric vehicle numbers climbed through 2026
PLN put Bali's electric vehicle population at roughly 14,000 in March and 15,000 in July. By October, the reported total had reached 17,725, including approximately 5,000 cars and more than 12,000 motorcycles.
The October figure is a snapshot reported by the electricity provider. Neither news report supplies a breakdown of vehicles by district, so the total cannot establish where electric vehicles are most common or how much local charging demand each area faces.
There are 115 charging locations, not 304 separate addresses
The network reported by PLN consists of around 304 public charging units, known in Indonesia as SPKLU, distributed among 115 locations. It includes facilities developed by PLN and private businesses. A site may therefore account for more than one unit; the larger number is not a count of distinct places available to drivers.
PLN is encouraging private operators to develop charging infrastructure where demand is attractive, while saying it will help provide facilities in areas that attract less commercial interest. This is an approach to future development, not a published schedule of new openings. The October announcement did not provide a district-level inventory, connector breakdown or utilisation figures.
Daily charging needs call for a local check
Someone considering an electric car for life in Bali needs to know whether a compatible charger is convenient to home, work and regular journeys. PLN Mobile provides a way to search for public charging locations and view information such as connector types and charger availability. Conditions at a particular site may still change, so the live details matter more than a province-wide total.
The distinction is especially relevant to tenants without home-charging access. Electric motorcycle owners face a separate compatibility question: a public charger intended for cars may not suit their battery or charging arrangement. Neither the count of 304 units nor the number of locations tells a prospective user the expected queue, price or access hours at a specific facility.
