Living in Bali: what to check before moving
A move rarely fails because a home looked wrong in a photograph. It fails on an ordinary Tuesday: who travels where, which status the household needs, and how school, healthcare and routine costs actually fit together. Build that route first; choose the area and home after.
- Choose an ordinary day, not ‘Bali in general’: work, children, groceries, a doctor, the airport, visitors and the journey home.
- Do not merge your basis for staying, right to work and housing choice. They are different questions with different sources.
- Before an agreement, compare more than the room and the view: test whether the address holds up against your real timetable.
Reader question
What needs to be clear before you attach a household or budget to one address?
Scope of this guide
This is a decision map: area, daily routine, status, housing and household questions. A transaction, exact immigration requirements, schools and healthcare each need a separate check for your situation.

1. Start with the week, not the postcode
For one household an area revolves around school; for another, around calls; for a third, around flights or visiting family. None of these scenarios is superior. They simply make different addresses workable.
Name five places in an ordinary week and draw the real journeys between them. The area then stops being an aesthetic label and becomes a hypothesis you can test. The area guide is for that first filter, not for declaring one place ‘best’.
2. Housing does not settle your stay status
Housing, the basis for staying and work often appear in the same conversation, which makes them easy to treat as one issue. That is false efficiency: a housing agreement does not settle immigration status, and a status does not by itself settle the terms of particular work or a transaction.
Indonesia's official eVisa service is where to check a current route and its requirements. Before any commitment, reconcile your purpose, nationality, dates and current conditions there or with the appropriate professional. This page does not select a visa for you.

3. Household questions belong before the viewings
For a family, a list of ‘best schools’ is less useful than a list of questions: which programme a child needs, how admission works, where the day takes place, who travels, and what changes with age or a new schedule. The government's Sekolah Kita service can start a location-and-level school search, but it does not confirm a place, language of instruction, fee, transport or admission for an individual child.
Healthcare needs the same discipline. Do not choose an area because someone says there is ‘a clinic nearby’. Check the required specialty, insurance network, language, an ordinary and urgent-day route, and what happens when your usual clinician is unavailable.

4. Housing tests the scenario; it is not the final reward
Once rhythm, status and household needs are clear even in draft form, viewings produce useful questions: is quiet or travel time more important, is a separate room or daily infrastructure more valuable, and is the horizon short or potentially longer?
If you are buying, do not automatically carry a renter's instincts into a transaction. Rights, records, payments and party checks need their own route. You can like an address and still find it a poor fit for a particular legal structure.
5. Use regional context, but do not substitute it for a personal check
BPS Bali's annual publication brings together official regional material across social, transport and economic topics. It is useful for seeing a frame larger than one agent or one video. Province-wide statistics, however, cannot tell you how your own route, agreement or home will work.
The useful order is: official context first, your question list next, then specific documents and routes for the address. Separating those levels early makes it less likely that an attractive general story replaces a check of the actual decision.

Decision steps
- Describe an ordinary week
Name the necessary places, people and journeys—not only the view you would like.
- Separate status, work and housing
Each question has its own source, document and point of verification.
- Test the household route
Before a viewing, prepare questions about school, health, insurance and daily logistics.
- Test the address against your day
Compare addresses against a real scenario, not only photographs and the word ‘convenient’.
- Choose the next narrow route
Area, status, a purchase and a specific service need different pages and checks.
FAQ
Where do I start if I do not know the area yet?
Start with an ordinary week: work, household, essential journeys and the level of quiet or access you cannot do without. Then compare areas against that scenario.
Can I rent first and settle status later?
This page does not make that recommendation. Housing and the basis for staying are different questions; before a commitment, check the current official route for your purpose and circumstances.
Can I choose a school from a directory?
A directory can build a starting list, but it does not replace direct checks of programme, admission, places, language, transport and your household's conditions.
Are moving and buying property the same route?
No. A living scenario helps define the address you need. A purchase adds separate questions about rights, parties, records and payments.
