Bali's August 2026 tourism figures show higher hotel occupancy
In brief: Bali recorded 685,994 direct foreign tourist arrivals in August 2026, down 1.69% from July, even as occupancy at star-rated hotels increased to 68.19%; the provincial figures reveal a difference between visitor numbers and hotel use, but cannot establish the earnings of a holiday rental.
Hotel occupancy edged up as international arrivals fell
Statistics Indonesia's Bali office (BPS) released its August tourism figures on October 1, 2026. The province counted 685,994 direct foreign arrivals, compared with 697,809 in July. That was a monthly decline of 1.69%, although August arrivals were still 0.46% higher than in August 2025.
The longer period presents a less positive comparison. Across January–August 2026, Bali recorded 4,586,959 direct foreign arrivals, 1.62% below the same eight months in 2025. A modest year-on-year gain in August therefore sits alongside a decline for the year to date.
The occupancy rate for star-rated hotel rooms reached 68.19%, up from 67.29% in July. It remained below the 69.54% recorded in August 2025. Non-star-rated hotels and other covered accommodation had an August occupancy rate of 43.16%, against 42.54% the previous month. These are different accommodation categories, and their results should not be blended into a single assumption about a property's performance.
Australians led arrivals, while France moved ahead of India
Australian passport holders accounted for 161,258 visits in August, or 23.51% of Bali's direct international arrivals. France took third place with 41,937 arrivals, overtaking India, according to figures cited by ANTARA on October 9 from the Bali Tourism Office and BPS. The later report added detail about visitor origins; it did not represent a separate month's tourism results.
That mix of visitors may be relevant to accommodation operators because holiday calendars and lengths of stay can vary between markets. But an arrival count does not indicate whether someone chose a star-rated hotel, a smaller establishment or a privately rented villa. Nor does hotel room occupancy reveal nightly prices, management costs or net rental income.
For anyone evaluating a villa investment, the provincial release is best used as background alongside evidence from comparable properties: paid booking nights, rates actually achieved, operating expenses and results outside the busiest periods. Even the 68.19% figure describes one hotel category across Bali, not an occupancy forecast for a particular district or home.
