Denpasar targets 40 drainage sites ahead of the rainy season
In brief: Denpasar's city government is removing sediment from rivers and drains at 40 sites, including locations around Sanur. Officials aim to complete the clearing work by the end of October 2026, but that target does not mean individual neighbourhoods are flood-proof.
A visit to Tukad Loloan in Sanur Kauh on 3 October brought the programme into focus. Mayor I Gusti Ngurah Jaya Negara said crews had been working for roughly six weeks, with heavy sediment making progress particularly difficult along this waterway. The city's public works department is coordinating the effort as preparations for the wet season continue.
Work extends beyond Tukad Loloan
The maintenance programme also includes Tukad Mati, Tukad Rangda and Tukad Ayung. Crews are dredging accumulated material and clearing waterways to improve the movement of rainwater. At Tukad Mati, the regional river-basin authority has supported the operation with two wheel loaders.
These are works in progress, not a declaration that the drainage network has been fully repaired. Denpasar manages drainage through several river and neighbourhood systems, including one covering Renon, Panjer, Sanur and Sidakarya. Conditions can therefore differ considerably between nearby streets.
Eleven construction locations are a different measure
The city has also identified 11 sites for drainage-system construction in 2026. Among them are the area around Duyung Beach in Sanur, Kerta Raharja Street in Sidakarya, Tukad Batanghari Street and Pura Demak III Street. The 40-site figure refers to maintenance and river or drain clearing; the two counts describe separate types of activity and should not be mistaken for 51 completed improvements.
The mayor's stated deadline of late October 2026 applies to the normalisation and clearing works. There was no completed-work announcement in the 3–4 October reports. Nor did those reports provide street-by-street flood-risk assessments or evidence that a particular property would remain accessible in heavy rain.
For people renting or living in Denpasar, especially around Sanur, the relevant question is local: has the drain serving the property been cleared, and has the access road flooded before? A citywide programme can reduce an obstruction without eliminating every source of flooding. Until completion and local outcomes are known, it would be premature to treat the announcement as proof that an address is protected.
