Badung moves ahead with 2,365 additional streetlights
In brief: Badung Regency in Bali aims to add 2,365 streetlighting points by the end of 2026. The procurement stage has finished and the project is being implemented, although the authorities have not confirmed how many of the new lights are already operating.
Badung's Transportation Agency outlined the programme on 6 October, identifying poorly lit areas as its priority. The investment could make some evening journeys easier for residents, but the district-wide figures are not a timetable for any particular road.
South Kuta accounts for 1,179 planned lighting points
South Kuta has the largest allocation, with 1,179 new points. Mengwi is assigned 420, Abiansemal 218, North Kuta 215, Kuta 177 and Petang 156. The six allocations add up to the announced total of 2,365.
For residents of South Kuta and North Kuta, in particular, the numbers may sound significant. They describe work across large administrative areas, however. The 6 October announcement does not identify the individual streets involved or when each set of lights will be switched on.
The contract value fell to roughly Rp16 billion after tendering
Badung originally set aside Rp21.5 billion for the 2026 streetlighting procurement and installation programme. The reported contract value following the tender process is approximately Rp16 billion. By 6 October, procurement had been completed, the winning contractors selected and the project had entered its implementation phase.
The scope also includes repairing damaged lighting poles. The total of 2,365 refers to planned additional lighting points; it is not a count of newly operational lights.
The remaining lighting gap is still substantial
According to the Transportation Agency, Badung needs more than 40,000 streetlighting points overall, while approximately 25,000 were in place when the announcement was made. That leaves a reported shortfall of around 15,000. Even full delivery of the 2026 programme would address only a portion of the unmet need.
Anyone comparing neighbourhoods for a long-term rental should distinguish the proposed improvements from conditions on the ground. Until exact locations and completed installations are confirmed, a district's allocation cannot tell you whether a particular walk home will be well lit.
