Former Bali environment official faces trial over Suwung landfill management
In brief: Prosecutors read out charges against former Bali forestry and environment agency head I Made Teja in Denpasar on 1 October 2026; the allegations concern environmental oversight at the Suwung waste facility during his tenure; they are not findings of guilt.
What prosecutors allege went wrong at Suwung
The case centres on the Sarbagita Suwung regional waste facility in southern Denpasar, which operated under the provincial forestry and environment agency. Teja led that agency from 2019 to 2024. At the opening hearing, prosecutor Ni Komang Swastini described responsibilities including waste management, pollution control and supervision of the landfill, according to reports by ANTARA and Bali Post.
The alleged failures date from 2023 through November 2024. Prosecutors say the facility was over capacity and that problems with wastewater treatment and landfill leachate contributed to environmental pollution or damage. Leachate is contaminated liquid that can form as water passes through waste; managing it is one of the key safeguards at a disposal site. Whether the alleged shortcomings amount to criminal negligence remains for the court to decide.
The indictment invokes Indonesia's environmental protection and waste management legislation. The first hearing was devoted to reading the charges, with the defence expected to respond or raise procedural objections. The available accounts of that hearing do not report a verdict.
The mangrove damage figures are part of the indictment
One focus is an estimated 40,564 square metres of mangrove area near the landfill. Drawing on environment ministry documents cited in court, prosecutors put alleged environmental losses at approximately Rp55.63 billion, alongside an estimated Rp22.95 billion for restoration.
Those are prosecution figures, not an independently established final assessment by the court. They also do not represent money already committed to repair the site. Separating the damage estimate from actual remediation is important: the public has yet to see, from this hearing alone, what measures may ultimately be required and who would be responsible for them.
For people living in Denpasar or neighbouring Badung, the immediate significance is scrutiny of how a major regional waste site was supervised. This criminal case does not itself announce a new household collection schedule or provide measurements of present-day conditions in nearby neighbourhoods. Anyone assessing a particular residential area would need current, location-specific environmental data and local waste-service notices, not a general assumption drawn from the court allegations.
