Tabanan reports a need for 837 teachers, with no confirmed local hiring quota

In brief: Education officials in Tabanan, Bali, estimate that the regency will need 837 additional teachers by the end of 2026. A proposed national recruitment drive in 2027 could help, although no allocation of posts to Tabanan has been confirmed.

Families considering a public school in Tabanan have a new reason to look closely at individual schools' staffing. On 9 October 2026, the regency's education chief, I Gusti Putu Ngurah Darma Utama, described a substantial teacher shortage and said the local administration had submitted its staffing assessment for consideration. That is a statement of need, not a recruitment decision.

Retirements are adding pressure across three school levels

The forecast of 837 covers kindergartens, primary schools and junior secondary schools through 31 December 2026. Senior secondary schools fall under the Bali provincial government, so the regency's estimate should not be taken as a count for every public school on the island.

Around 300 teachers in Tabanan are reaching retirement during 2026, according to the education office. Retirements contribute to the projected shortfall; the figures should not be added together to produce a larger vacancy total. Officials have not released a school-by-school breakdown in the reports accompanying the announcement.

The local education office has submitted an analysis of staffing requirements to the regency's personnel and human-resources agency. The number of positions ultimately opened will depend on budget capacity and the recruitment arrangements adopted by the authorities. No commitment to fill all 837 positions has been announced.

A national hiring plan does not yet translate into Tabanan classrooms

Indonesia's education ministry has outlined a phased effort to recruit more government teachers from 2027. Public statements have cited roughly 139,000 positions nationally for that year. Tabanan officials welcome the plan, especially the prospect that applicants may enter the selection process without already holding a professional teacher education certificate. The detailed conditions and the distribution of posts still need to be set out in the applicable recruitment notices.

For parents, the timing is as important as the national total. Even if Tabanan receives new positions, a recruitment exercise in 2027 cannot be assumed to relieve shortages during the current school year. Nor does the regency-wide figure establish that a particular school has lost classes or lacks teachers for a child's subjects.

School choice therefore remains a local question: how many regular teachers are available at the relevant grade level, whether key subjects are fully staffed, and how absences are covered. Those answers can differ considerably between schools and cannot be inferred from a single district-wide estimate.
