Denpasar targets late 2026 for construction work at 19 schools
In brief: Denpasar's education office says work is under way at 14 primary and five junior secondary schools, with completion scheduled in stages through December 2026. The announcement gives a citywide timeline, not an opening date for each campus.
Limited space is shaping the new school buildings
Some of Denpasar's older school blocks are being demolished because they are severely damaged. Their replacements will rise two or three storeys, an approach the city has chosen in response to limited available land. The plans cover more than classrooms: staff rooms, headteachers' offices, libraries and laboratories are among the facilities described by the education department.
The programme was outlined by I Nyoman Suriawan, a city education official, in an interview published by detikBali on 17 September 2026. He said work had begun around June and July, and that 14 primary schools and five junior secondary schools were receiving municipal support for their buildings.
Costs vary according to the size and layout of each project. Suriawan cited approximately 3.744 billion Indonesian rupiah for a package involving six new classrooms. That figure is not a per-school estimate for all 19 locations.
The October start to completions is a target, not a handover report
The city expected the earliest projects to finish in October, with others following in November and December. Those months were announced as a construction timetable. The September account did not identify which schools would finish first or provide evidence that any building had already been handed over for teaching.
This distinction matters for families already enrolled at an affected school. The published information does not explain whether lessons have been moved to temporary rooms, whether access arrangements have changed, or when individual classes can return to a completed building. Those details need to come from the school concerned.
Municipal works and Bali's national school programme are separate figures
A subsequent notice from Denpasar's education office, dated 5 October, described central-government support for revitalising 401 schools across Bali province in 2026. That province-wide programme has a different funding scope from the 19 municipal school projects discussed in September. The available reports do not establish whether any campuses appear in both sets of figures, so adding the totals would be misleading.
For a family comparing neighbourhoods, a future school building is encouraging but does not establish how many places will be available or whether admission arrangements will change. Until individual completion and classroom-use schedules are confirmed, current facilities and teaching arrangements offer the firmer basis for a decision.
