Retirement living and accessibility in Bali

The deciding factors are often not the view but ordinary things: whether living is on one level, whether entry is comfortable in rain, who is nearby on a weekday and what happens if the usual rhythm changes. A useful choice starts with that map, not a promise that a home suits everyone.

What should be checked before a long lease or purchase?

Separate home, route and support. For the home: entry, steps, bathroom, lighting and what can be seen at a viewing. For the route: real destinations and travel time. For support: who answers an everyday issue if you cannot.

The short answer

Indonesia’s official rules treat accessibility of housing, public services and disaster protection as a distinct subject. This is a checklist prompt, not confirmation that a particular home is accessible or safe. Assess a property through its real layout, route and records; medical and visa questions remain separate.

1. Describe an ordinary day first

Write down not an ideal holiday day but morning, shopping, travel, communications, time alone and coming home after fatigue. Then ask what in the chosen home makes that day easier, and what adds dependence on others.

There is no universal list for older people. One person may need one-level living; another, shade, quiet or proximity to family. This page helps name the criterion; it does not decide it for somebody.

2. Inspect the home as a route

Walk the route from street to bed, bathroom, kitchen and exit. Note level changes, wet areas, light, doors, turning space, bell and communication. This is observation, not a technical conclusion. If an element matters and cannot be assessed, retain the question for an appropriate professional.

Government Regulation No. 42 of 2020 concerns accessibility of housing, public services and disaster protection for persons with disabilities. A rule does not turn every home into an accessible one; it confirms accessibility is a separate subject of checking.

3. Support should be concrete

Do not promise yourself that someone will help. Name a contact, a real scope of responsibility and a plan for when the usual arrangement fails. It may be family, a neighbour, manager or a selected service, but only where it is actually agreed.

The Ministry of Social Affairs publishes guidance on developing older-person-friendly environments. Use it as a prompt to look beyond one home: route, social connection, everyday destinations and ability to obtain help. It does not confirm a particular Bali service or care arrangement.

Decision steps

  1. Describe the day

Record the real rhythm and independent actions that matter.

  2. Walk the route

Inspect the route from entry to key home points and note questions.

  3. Check outside destinations

Match the address with needed places and ordinary travel time.

  4. Confirm support

Name a real contact and the boundary of agreed everyday support.

  5. Preserve reversibility

Do not tie a transaction to a material unconfirmed answer.
