School selection and admissions in Bali
A move with a child can quickly become a search for either a beautiful school or a beautiful home. The decision usually breaks on an ordinary Tuesday: how long the journey takes, who collects the child, what the first month looks like and who can answer the question the website does not. A better start is not brand comparison. Describe the family day, then build a short list of schools willing to answer for your child.
Where should a family begin?
Write down age and intended entry year, language, previous programme, whether a gentle transition is needed, who will travel in the morning and afternoon, and which part of the island the family can genuinely live in. This is not form-filling for its own sake. Without those six points, neither the school questions nor the housing choice can be made honestly.
The short answer
A useful order is: family criteria first, then a verifiable school list, then direct questions about the admission process, and only after that the home address and a real journey at the relevant time. The official Sekolah Kita directory is a sensible starting map: it can help search by area, level and status, and show a profile and contact details. It cannot replace a conversation with the school or tell you whether that school suits your child.
1. Do not begin with a school name
Two families asking for an ‘international school’ may mean entirely different things. One needs continuity after a previous programme, another a short journey, a third language support, and a fourth a timetable that works with the parents’ jobs. Put priorities in order rather than pretending they all carry equal weight.
It also helps to name the red lines: how many changes a child cannot realistically manage, which language is not yet workable, whether a temporary address is possible, and who must be reachable by the school. This list does not choose a school for the family. It prevents conversations where everyone agrees while discussing different things.
2. Build a list that can be checked
There is no need to hunt for a single ‘best’ school from somebody else’s list. Start with several candidates from the official directory, the schools’ own sites and direct contacts. Sekolah Kita can be searched by area, education level and status, and shows location, profile and contact information. It is a better starting point than an advert or an untraceable chat recommendation.
Keep one card for each candidate: official address and contact, likely level, a link to its own admissions process, date of last reply and open questions. Do not turn a directory entry into a conclusion about quality, places or suitability. The directory does not provide those conclusions.

3. Admission is a separate conversation, not a ‘register’ button
Ministry resources describe the admissions framework and publish current guidance. But the process, intake window, requested records and applicability of a requirement depend on school type, level, family status and the actual date. The only honest next step is to ask the chosen school which process applies to your case now and where it is recorded.
In the first email, do not ask for an immediate place confirmation. Describe the child as a person, not a keyword bundle: age, intended grade, previous programme, language, hoped-for start date and the right admissions contact. Then ask for the current stages and materials. If the reply stays general, do not turn that into a conclusion; mark the question open.

4. Records are not the last step
Collect records from a written request made by the particular school, not from somebody else’s checklist. Note what already exists, what may need translation or explanation, and who can support the child’s prior programme. Do not promise a school material that is not yet available, and do not fill a gap with a guess.
Within the family, separately agree how adjustment will be noticed: who sees that the child is struggling, how it will be discussed with the school, and whether a meeting or a trial format is possible. No website can confirm in advance how a transition will go. That conversation can still happen before a long lease or purchase is committed.
5. Choose the home after the daily destinations are real
Once there is a short list and a real contact, the home address stops being abstract. Test the journey at the times the family actually needs it: morning, end of day, activities, work and ordinary errands rarely form one straight line. Do not treat someone else’s ‘nearby’ as your own time calculation.
A family usually has three honest scenarios: choose the school first and then the area; choose a compact area cluster and test schools within it; or preserve reversibility at the start with temporary housing while school and rhythm become clear. This is not an instruction about which scenario is best. It avoids locking a child into an address selected without their everyday life in view.
Decision steps
- Build the family brief
Name age, entry year, language, previous programme, daily rhythm and red lines.
- Find checkable candidates
Use the official directory as a starting point, not a ranking or proof of a place.
- Write to each school
Ask for the current process, admissions contact, stages and records for your case.
- Keep replies and gaps
Record reply date, source of each condition and questions the school has not yet answered.
- Test the daily route
Compare addresses and the journey at relevant times before an irreversible housing decision.
