Jinshan asked to assess Battambang for bioethanol production

Event date

Jinshan outlined four areas it could pursue in Cambodia, including research and cultivation of Super Arundo donax, bioethanol production, distributed green-power systems and broader technology cooperation. The company also expressed interest in assembling power-generation equipment in Cambodia for domestic use and ASEAN markets.

Battambang was raised because of its established agricultural economy. The province already produces crops such as rice, cassava and maize, giving the company a base from which to test whether a new industrial feedstock could work commercially under Cambodian conditions.

Cost competitiveness comes before construction

The government did not announce a plant approval or a commitment of land. Minister Hem Vanndy called for detailed technical and commercial assessment, with particular attention to whether the resulting energy could be priced competitively for Cambodian consumers and businesses.

If the economics prove credible, the next step could be a more detailed joint study. The minister also suggested starting with one or two demonstration applications before considering wider deployment, so the technology can be tested locally rather than assumed to work at commercial scale.

No specific land has been selected

Officials said some agricultural areas could potentially shift toward industrial crops in the future, and that discussions with farmers and plantation owners could be facilitated. No named plots or districts within Battambang were identified in the announcement.

A feasibility discussion may eventually create local demand for land, logistics and supporting services, but there is not yet enough evidence to price that scenario into a purchase decision.

What businesses can watch next

The meaningful milestones would be a formal feasibility programme, named pilot sites, agreements with landholders, demonstrated production costs or an actual investment decision. Any of those would move the proposal beyond the current exploratory stage.

For now, the announcement is useful as an indicator of industrial interest in Battambang and Cambodia’s bioenergy sector. It is not evidence that a bioethanol complex is already going ahead.
