NBC rejects social-media claims of trouble at Cambodian banks

Event date

The central bank told customers to rely on official information

The NBC warned that unverified claims can harm banking customers and weaken confidence in the financial system. It urged the public not to circulate information without a clear source and said banking-related claims should be checked through the central bank and other competent authorities. The NBC also called for legal action against people involved in deliberately spreading or distorting false information.

For customers, the distinction is important. The regulator rejected the rumours described in its 2 October statement, but a system-level reassurance cannot answer every question about a particular bank's operations, licence status or access to deposits. Those issues depend on current notices concerning the institution itself.

First-half figures show growth alongside a 9.6% gross NPL ratio

The NBC also pointed to its banking-sector results for the first half of 2026. By June, customer loans had risen 4.6% to 256.7 trillion riel, about US$64.2 billion, while deposits increased 4.4% to 257.4 trillion riel, around US$64.4 billion. Sector capital grew 3% to 42 trillion riel, or roughly US$10.5 billion.

At the same time, the gross non-performing loan ratio was 9.6%. That number is a sector-wide measure of loan quality; it does not establish whether a particular bank is under stress. For someone worried about a specific institution, current regulatory notices and the bank's own operational announcements are more relevant than either an anonymous social-media post or a broad national aggregate.
