Thailand targets longer, wellness-led trips from Japan at Tourism Expo 2026
Thailand is targeting deeper trips, not just more arrivals
Tourism Expo Japan 2026 runs at Tokyo Big Sight from 24 to 27 September. The Tourism Authority of Thailand is presenting the country under its “Healing is the New Luxury” concept, combining wellness experiences with culture, nature and local activities designed to encourage repeat travel and longer stays.
The Thailand Pavilion includes cultural performances, craft activities and wellness-focused experiences. TAT says Japanese travellers show particular interest in culture, history, natural settings and UNESCO World Heritage sites, while it is also trying to reach higher-spending segments interested in wellness and health, shopping, sports and premium travel.
For businesses in Thailand, the useful point is the type of visitor TAT wants to attract. The campaign is aimed at travellers who may stay longer and spend more, but it does not show that demand has already increased in any specific Thai city or neighbourhood.
For practical context, see Living in Thailand. This development also connects with Thailand’s NCI Starts Using Vessel Coupler in Cancer Surgery.
TAT puts the average Japanese trip at 7.74 days
According to TAT, Japanese visitors spend an average of 7.74 days in Thailand and 40,497.38 baht per trip. The agency is using those figures as part of a push for higher-value travel ahead of Japan’s October–December holiday period.
There are clear headwinds as well. TAT points to higher oil prices and airfares, a weaker yen and increased fuel surcharges as factors affecting travel decisions and spending. Those constraints matter because a marketing campaign can generate interest without necessarily translating into a larger visitor flow if getting to Thailand becomes more expensive.
Property owners and tourism operators can treat the figures as useful market context, but not as evidence of higher occupancy, rents or investment returns. The announcement provides no booking or rental-market data at that level.
More seats are being pursued, but no new route is confirmed
TAT says it is working with airline and travel-trade partners on additional seat capacity and charter services from regional Japanese airports, including Sendai. It is also planning joint campaigns for higher-value travellers and promoting secondary Thai destinations.
That is a stated objective rather than a confirmed timetable. A new route, frequency or charter programme should only be treated as operational once the airline or relevant operator publishes firm details.
